He wears sunglasses... Madeleine didn't have to use too much effort to push the retort down her throat. However, if he had said something like "Elvis had a quiff" or "John Lennon had glasses" (and it was entirely plausible, knowing Lee) she probably wouldn't be able to. So she satisfied herself with a shake of the head. "I didn't know you could play harmonica," she replied, slightly surprised. "Are you any good?"

"I ruddy hope so," he said, grinning. "It's hardly taxing. Things like guitar, or piano or singing or whatever would be much more useful to me- but no. I harmonize."

"You harmonize," she laughed. "I've never heard you sing, though. Can you?"

Lee wrinkled his nose. "No idea, really. Can you?"

"Nope," she said, a little proudly. "It's my thing - I can play guitar, but when it comes to singing, I am awful. Even my mother begged me not to sing at home, and especially not where people could hear me," she added, with a laugh.

Lee laughed. "Okay, I'm not quite that bad. Marli told me I was a good singer- but she was deaf, so I don't think that counts..." Yes, Marli was deaf, he wasn't just saying that. She always had to use her little hearing aid; and she always turned it up really, really loud. Marli had taught Lee bits and pieces of sign language, and Lee had taught her chess. They'd been good friends.

"Marli?" Madeleine asked, curious. "Friend from back home? I don't recognise the name."

"Yeah," Lee replied. "Marli was my neighbour."

"Must be nice, to have a neighbour," Madeleine said, a little wistfully. "I had far too many neighbours... and don't ask me what their names were..." She perked up a little. "It was kind of fun though. There were always new people."

Lee laughed. "I was always surrounded by old people. Not like they were old, though. I just mean it was the same faces- the same setting- day in, day out. I never moved. I just stayed put. And my world stayed put with me. That's why running away was so... well, scary. Me and Kira-" He stopped, biting his lip. Running away. He'd never told her- or anyone else- about that before.

Running away?! The words hit Madeleine with a shock. They ran away? She hadn't known that... did anyone? Was that why Lee's parents hadn't written? Had she put her foot in it again? Was everything okay with Lee? She frowned at him, worried. "You ran away? But wh- I mean.... do you want to, can you tell me why?" The shock was plain in her voice, and she hated it that she couldn't hide what she was thinking as far as her voice went.

Lee stared at her blankly for a few moments; the thoughts and memories swirling around his head in an unexpected wave of emotion. He cleared his throat, steadying himself. "No," he replied simply. "I will tell you about it one day. I will. But not today. It's my birthday." Smiling suddenly, struck by inspiration he leant forward and looked intently into Madeleine's eyes. "I don't want to spend my birthday talking." Bad line- great distraction. And the merits of it wouldn't be half-bad either.

She leaned forward, fighting off the million and two questions tumbling into her head. Another day. Like he said, it was his birthday. "That was an awful line," she smiled teasingly, looking just as intently back into his lovely blue eyes.

See? Lee laughed. "Did it work?"

Madeleine smiled and pretended to think about it. "Maybe..." She got up from her chair and slid onto his lap, moving her arms up and around his neck. "You know, if you want to kiss me, just go for it; you don't need rubbish lines."
