"Nice," Misa couldn't refrain from saying - she hadn't witnessed a conjuring yet. The skill of pulling pbjects into being, well, it was a heck of a lot more impressive than being able to make people imagine something is there. "So how long since you...forgot?" She asked conversationally as she moved her first pawn into play. It felt bizarre doing something as normal as playing Chess, she hadn't done anything completely normal in...a very long time.

"About a week, or two," Lee replied, moving the his black pawn forward to mirror hers. "It's not bad, though. People think it would be, but it's not..." he glanced up at her. "Would you find it hard if you forgot everything? I've been wondering if I'm a freak, or not, you see, for not being miserable about it..."

"There are some things I would give the world to forget," She replied without hesitation. Misa promptly blushed as she realised how quickly she'd replied. Think before you speak, else he might realise how freakish you are... Her annoying little voice said and she took its advice. "I think I would miss my recent memories - since I came to Orchid, actually. Nothing before that was really worth remembering. Well, I say worth but really I sort of mean...some things would really be better left forgotten," like the past fifteen years, minus a few weeks, "Funny thing is, some of my memories are gone too. Technically, they're still there somewhere," Misa tapped her head gently,"I just don't know where...a locked box and I haven't the foggiest about the where I left the key. To be completely honest, I don't think I want to know...like I said: better left forgotten." She shivered slightly and pulled her sleeves down by force of habit. Change of subject... "Is there any chance of you remembering...?"

"Yeah," Lee said softly. "There's a chance- but not much of one. I'd need a trigger to set me off... something like chess should really have done it-" he waved at the board, "but apparently it hasn't." So there was another possibility crossed off his list. Others included his family, Madeleine, Jude and his friends. However, he was beginning to feel like really nothing would work.

She felt a surge of compassion for Lee as she heard the dejected tone in his voice. Gently she reached across and lightly touched the back of his hand, "Someone once told me, only where there's hope is there chance." She smiled reassuringly, "Just...give it time and who knows?"

Lee smiled at her, surprised and strangely awkward at her words. He hadn't expected her to be so nice about it, he supposed. "Thanks," he said, a little gruffly. "Em... your move."

Misa retracted her hand, sensing his obvious awkwardness. But still, she'd given him some form of encouragement. She glanced down at the Chess board. Flipping Heck! How had that happened? He had at least three of her pawns and a little castle thingy, um, a rook, already! "Oh!" She exclaimed. "You weren't kidding about the whole whizz kid thing, then?"

He stared blankly at the board. "I don't know how I did it, to be honest..." He really didn't. With this game, he just looked, and the little logical voice just told him what to do. It came like a second nature- like instinct. But that still didn't explain how he actually did it. "Chess champion," he winked. "I guess it pays off."

"I'll bet," Misa smiled at the look of honest surprise Lee held at his own natural abilities. She made another move, knowing it was utterly pointless to even attempt winning, and her mind wondered back to the conversation, "So, you're a conjuror? Is that it or...?" Misa wasn't completely sure if everybody had three powers and it a topic that really did fascinate her - people's abilties. Well, it fascinated her until the question was inverted but, she was learning to deal with that.

"No." Lee moved his knight, taking out the piece she'd just moved. "Oh. Sorry." He looked up at her again, smiling. "Well, I'm a conjurer... then I've got earth powers and..." he struggled for a second, trying to remember the last one. "Oh! I've got wings." Magical Fairy Man. Very nice. He was sure that one went down well. "What about you?"

Wings. Now that was something new. She vaguely wondered if his wings were like she imagined an angel's - all lightest and air, but somehow, she doubted it. No, she could see them now, much more macho, darker, more weapons than anything else. And he was an earth elementalist, too! "Snap! I mean, I have the earth connection as well," She smiled having the decency to blush lightly at her daft little outburst, pondering her next move. "So, what's it like to fly then?"

"Sort of like..." The question stumped him slightly. What did she mean... what was it like? More so than that- how the hell did he answer? "I guess it's like flying," he shrugged, biting his lip. "Sorry, I just... I don't know. I haven't tried it since I forgot..." It was becoming more and more awkward to have to say that. It caused gaping gaps in conversations, and he hated that. Earlier today, he'd been with some friends, and they'd all started laughing about something that'd happened with Lee's powers in earth class... but he'd no idea what it was! And the worst part was, when he gently reminded them he didn't know, they went awkward. They got all uncomfortable and shuffled a bit and said, "Oh, sorry, Lee." And it just made him feel worse whenever he glanced at the chessboard, he realised his queen was closing in on her king. "Um... check." Well, it moved the conversation on.

There was an awkward lull in the conversation, which she didn't exactly understand, but maybe people asked him about flying all the time and he found it incredibly boring now. She was just about to say something different, when he said, so softly she barely heard him, "Um...check," She glanced down at the board and was taken aback to see his Queen blocking her king from every angle. She tipped her King over on the board.
d**n. She wasn't that bad at Chess, how on earth...? He really hadn't been kidding.
"I'd say good game, but there wasn't really one - you're so good!" She said, kindly.

Lee laughed awkwardly; uncertain of the compliment. "Thanks; but it was pretty clos..." Alright. To lie would be to insult this girl's intelligence. Instead, he shook his head, and smiled at her. "You're not too bad, yourself," he told her honestly. "That tactic with the pawns- I mean, it was pretty good. It took me a while to spot it."

"Oh that? It's not mine, a friend taught me..."Misa said, the smile sliding from her face like sap as she thought of her Friend. He wouldn't teach her anything like that again. She glanced at the clock and saw it was after ten, almost time for bed, time for...she shivered. Why did it always come back to this, this horrid feeling? She had been having a perfectly nice conversation, but now she felt as though someone had tipped ice down her back.
