Lee was flicking through some photos Kira had given him; trying to acquaint himself with his family. They were due to arrive this weekend, or possibly Monday, after recieving an urgent letter from Prof. Hoodham detailing Lee's fall from grace. He hadn't had a proper chance to ask Kira about their family yet- he supposed he would when they came- but it was still hard trying to feel something for your mother when the woman smiling up from the photos was a stranger to you. He flipped each photograph over, focusing on the back, and Kira's elegantly scrawled notes: dates, names and places. How she could've been bothered to do that over the years, he'd no idea, but he was relieved she had. It made things a lot easier for him. Stacking the photos up one by one, and giving up, Lee sat up and sighed, looking out towards the window. It was frosting up now, snow gathering on the sill and blanketing with that crisp white coating. He'd been out in it earlier, and had managed to fall over about three times. Apparently, Lee could be a bit of a clutz. Lee looked back around the Common Room, and with a jolt of surprise, he noticed a dark-haired girl was sitting in the sofa opposite him. He hadn't noticed her before... As with all the strangers in the school, he kept finding himself wondering whether or not they were friends, and had bothered quite a few people that way by asking. Most of them he hadn't known, although he did find someone called Kyle who told him to give someone called 'Lydia' hell. Lovely fella'. "Hi," Lee said shyly, smiling at her.

Misa was shattered. Today...where on earth had today gone? And when had it begun to snow? Too many questions...not enough sleep. It was getting worse - she hadn't slept at all last night. It wasn't that she didn't want to see Ken'ichi it was just that...oh, please, who was she trying to kid? That was the exact reason. She had enjoyed such a wonderful night with Dylan, she didn't want it being marred by a memory. Was Ken'ichi just a memory, now? But then how was he talking to her? Why? Questions! She was going mad, definitely.
"Hi," A voice broke through her thought bubble and Misa jumped out of her skin. The boy in the armchair across from her own seat was talking to her. She didn't know him...or maybe she did...His smile seemed genuinely amiable at any rate if not a tad shy. Misa returned his smile with a weak imitation and replied, "Hi."

"Hi," she smiled. Informative. Well, she hadn't said his name. Was that a good thing or a bad thing? Maybe it wasn't either. Maybe it was just a thing. And maybe he should stop thinking about things. Stop. Now. "Sorry," he said, smiling again weakly, because he'd no idea what else to do. "Um... this may sound really weird, but- do I know you?" Lee had asked poor girl who'd kept glancing at him that, and she- under the impression he was asking her out- spat in his face and flounced off in an inexplicable temper, only to tell her friends in a very loud voice that Lee Norris was cheating on Madeleine Baudelaire. Fun.

"Um... this may sound really weird, but- do I know you?" A bizarre sort of relief fell over her as he asked the question she'd been dreading asking first. Now the tricky part...did she? In her mind Misa speed through her avidly growing collection of 'Orchid Memories' and found none of them containing this guy or his soft Irish accent. "No, I'm sort of new. I'm Misa. And you are...?" She let the question hang. 'Fill in the blanks.'

Oh, good. A girl who a) didn't hate him for asking this and b) he hadn't made the awful mistake of forgetting her. Hardly like he could help it... but sometimes he felt like he could have. He thought about Prof. Hoodham and what his Headmaster had said- someone, or something had been inside his head. But... and Lee's insides prickled with shame at the thought... but what if he'd been driven to such extreme measures because he'd let it get control? Because he'd been too weak? Except, that wasn't really a topic for small talk. "I'm Lee," he grinned, then paused. "And... I guess I'm sort of new too. D'you like it here?"

A strange range of emotions seemed to sweep across his face after she replied. Relief, Guilt; Frustration even?
'I'm Lee,' he grinned, then paused. 'And... I guess I'm sort of new too. D'you like it here?' He guessed he was new?. Sometimes it was best not to ask...Misa took a minute to consider his question instead.
She had meet some incredible people already, experienced many things she'd thought never possible, and last night had been quite possibly the happiest of her life. But there was that feeling, she was 'free' yet pushed further into a corner than ever before. The walls just felt too close. And then there were the pains and the dreams...Her eyes changed from sleepy emerald to dark brown just thinking about them.
"I think so. Madeleine said it could take a while to get use to, though. I understand what she meant now. What about you?"

"Yeah," Lee smiled. "Yeah, it seems... pretty alright, actually. So you know Madeleine?" At the mention of her name, he'd felt himself sit up a little straighter, and was sort of ashamed of it. Somewhere inside him- possibly morals, it seemed to fit the description- he felt like he shouldn't think of Maddie in this way, knowing full well that they had dated, and that they has seemed sorta kinda serious. It wasn't fair on her, he didn't think. But the other, much more fun little voice inside of his head still urged him on with that one, tantalising cry of... "So what?"

"She's my Head," Misa explained noting his obvious interest in Madeleine...Wait! Something finally clicked in her head. This was Lee. Madeleine's Lee. She'd vaguely recalled some girls in her dormitory whispering snidely about the pair and how 'serious' they were. So what on earth was going on; hadn't Lee been here all year, how on earth could he think he was new? "She's brilliant, I'm so glad to be working under her guidance." Misa said slowly. No, it was no use she couldn't help asking, "Look, I don't mean to be rude but, are you and Madeleine not involved?" It was completely unlike her to be so upfront but Misa was so tired, her manners were failing her as was her will to keep her eyelids open.

He grinned. Yeah, she was new alright. "Memory loss," he tapped his temple. "Don't recall a thing. So I've heard me and Maddie were involved. But that's all I really know." And what would she make of that? Empathy? Hadn't quite got the hang of that one yet. Maybe no guy ever did. That big guy, Jack, would certainly give him that impression! "Sorry, dunno' how public that particular information is yet..."

"I shouldn't imagine something like that could stay quiet here for long..." She explained, wide-eyed at this revelation. Memory loss? How the hell...the question was on the tip of her tongue but she refrained from asking it, that really would be too much. She felt a surprising amount of sympathy for him realising what that must mean. He didn't remember Madeleine. That was awful... "You remember nothing?" She asked instead, really not able to believe that. He seemed to calm, too relaxed about the whole thing to remember nothing.

"Well," Lee reasoned, "not nothing. I remember places, and facts and things. I can still play chess- I'm some sort of whiz kid at that! But as for people? Nope, nothing. People and personal memories are all just a blank." He should possibly have explained that a bit better... but that was the jist of it. No doubt there were a thousand million complicated details in there he'd just left out, or that perhaps Hoodham had left out too. Well, maybe.

Well, that was some story - one for the grandchildren and all that. A million questions wanted to burst forth from her now wide-awake mind but, for some reason completely unknown to her the one she had barely thought about did, "Fancy a game then? Of chess, I mean."

"Of... chess...?" That'd be his first game. His first... proper game in memory. He beamed at her. "Yeah! I'd love to! But..." he blushed slightly, "I may embarrass myself."

"I've heard that a thing like that, learnt once, will never be forgotten. What's the worst that can happen?" She tried to think of something to make him feel better, "I've only played Chess like...five times in my entire life! If anyone embarrasses themself it isn't hard to guess who it'll be!" She smiled encouragingly.

Lee smiled, and then, in a swift series of hand movements flicking back and forth in the air, a cheesboard began to fade into sight. Once satisfied, Lee flipped it open, the pieces appearing all at once as they popped up, and he set it down proudly. "That's the first thing I've conjured since... I forgot," Lee said, eyeing it critically. "Doesn't look too bad, does it? Okay then..." he looked back up at Misa and grinned. "Since, I guess I am technically the more experienced player, d'you wanna start first?"
