The silence enveloped him, as Lee slid down onto the floor, waiting for the blood to return to his brain. It sounded like what he'd said to Will... was it just the same sort of principles...? No. It was worse. She didn't even want to be his friend. What mad delusion had he been blessed with that something- something would've happened?
Was it her skin- her touch- her smell? Those strange things that never failed to send his senses into over-drive. And now the term 'senses' had a double meaning.
An over-active imagination...
Suddenly, there was a clattering, and Jude came into the room, looking incredibly sheepish at the sight of Lee.
"I... I forgot my school-bag. I was gonna' come back in, but then I heard you two..." He trailed off, biting his lip. "Sorry."
"It's fine," Lee said, picking himself off the floor and pulling his own school-bag over his shoulder. "I don't mind... Nothing came of it anyway."
"Right," Jude said awkwardly, fidgeting with the hem of his jacket. "Em... yeah. Well, tell you what, why don't we go down for a drink at the pub? Curfew isn't til' 9.30. We've got heaps of time."
"And then what?" Lee smiled weakly. "Drown our sorrows?"
"Even if we don't pass for being over 18..." Jude grinned. "That ginger beer's ruddy toxic."
"Will it have us singing carols?"
"Hark the bloody Herald's Angels Sing!"
Lee laughed, and followed Jude out of the hall. And somewhere, beneath his laughter and joking with Jude, a mad, stupid little part of him still clung to the hope that she would follow...
