"I saw you." The words came out as barely more than a whisper, escaping from Madeleine's unwilling mouth. But what else was there to say?

He was still lost. "Saw me...?"

She scowled at his clueless expression, unwilling to say anything more. "Yes, saw you... with her. With Chloe. At the camping trip."

Oh. OH. She didn't. Did she? "When she... kissed me?" His voice was deadly quiet, almost a whisper. He hadn't expected that. Did she see everything? Did she hear what he'd said? Hadn't she believed him...?

Oh... God. He wasn't about to tell her that it was Chloe, not him. Because if that wasn't a lie, then Madeleine had just made the single biggest mistake of her life so far. "Yes. When you kissed. I saw." Her voice was hushed.

He felt his shoulders slump. "How much of it did you see?" All of it? Really? And she still...?

"All I needed," said Madeleine. His tone sounded like an admission... Her shoulders slumped briefly, before she smiled at him with a brightness she didn't feel. "And it's okay, Lee. I wasn't making you happy, and you're happy with her now. That's all that matters." No, it wasn't. But she was prepared to lie.

Lee laughed dully at that. "Oh, yes. I'm ecstatic, I am. Almost as much as her." His own sarcasm surprised him. Did he really sound that bitter? Probably. It was just the same old story, over and over, wasn't it? Lee was frustrated with himself, and with the world around him, because he'd had the girl, and then he'd lost her. And although he had someone else, and could have had a third, it wasn't what he wanted. Madeleine was still, irrevocably and uncontrollably, the object of his desire. Ooh, the clarity. But she thought he was happy? She obviously didn't know him very well at all. He sighed. "I did mean what I said to her, you know, after she kissed me. If I'm honest... I still do. But then you dumped me, and I saw you with Levi and I just... freaked." If that made sense. Maybe. On some crazy, screwed-up level.

Madeleine froze. No.. no... Just no. Was there something she'd missed? Had she been so hasty to get away that she'd left before something very, very important? Had she just really, really, majorly screwed up? "What?" she said, her voice low and husky.

He shrugged awkwardly. He didn't feel like this was going very well at all. "I think it was jealousy that made me do it. I couldn't stand seeing Levi and you like that so... I asked Chloe out. Stupid, isn't it?" Stop staring at me like I'm mad, Madeleine...

Madeleine shook her head. "No. No, no. What were you talking about? You said that you... that you meant what you said. I didn't hear anything..."

He frowned at her. "What I said to Chloe when she kissed me- okay, okay, I know I didn't exactly give the best speech in the world. She terrified me. But I told her I couldn't be with her, because I was with you. And afterwards... thinking about it..." he paused and shook his head, "never mind. Doesn't matter now anyway, does it? You're with... Levi." That name never failed to furl his hands into fists.

No no no no NO. This was some sick joke, right? Had Kira set him up to this, in some twisted form of revenge for slapping her? She doubted Lee would go along with that, though. It just wasn't something that he would do. So... it had to be true. Stupid, stupid Madeleine. Why hadn't she talked to him about it before making a rash action? She inhaled deeply, fighting off the sense that she was going to be violently sick. "I didn't hear that. I left before I could... before I could hear you say anything. But, I guess it doesn't matter." Yes, it does.

He froze, his face and fists rigid. The muscles in his face tautened, and his eyes widened slightly as he stared at her. Of all things, he hadn't been expecting that. Of all things she could've said... why... hadn't he asked her why? Why hadn't he asked long before now? Because now was too late... Wasn't it? "Madeleine," Lee said softly. "I... I still want you." The words were wrenched out of him ruthlessly; as though an iron fist had forced its way down his throat, clawing out his insides.

I want you too... Inside, these words were screaming to get out of Madeleine, and she wanted nothing more than to be able to say them to him, to fix everything, to make it right. But she coudn't. Because if she did, they would hurt Chloe and Levi, and who was to say that things wouldn't work out exactly the same this time around? She had to bury what she felt, and forget that she'd ever heard Lee say that last sentence. Madeleine picked up her bag and slung it over her shoulder. "I can't do this Lee," she half-whispered, her voice harsh. "I'm sorry." And like that, she left, the slam of the door echoing hollowly behind her. At the end of the corridor, she lent back against the wall, let her harsh, ragged breathing catch up on her, and trying not to think the thoughts that were running through her head. Go back. Tell him how you feel. Make it all right again...
