Lee slit the envelope open carefully, taking his long-awaited letter out with a sigh of relief. Bethany hadn’t replied to any of his letters in such a long time, he’d been beginning to worry. He knew it was probably just some weird mail mix-up across No Man’s Land (after all, it was a difficult place to get post to Orchid across safely) but he always caught himself wondering whether or not she would bother replying. They hadn’t parted on the best of terms, and although he knew that he’d been long since forgiven… that nagging little what if was always at the back of his mind.
He wished his family were on Orchid’s side of the war. He wished they cared about what he was fighting for- about what he, Kira and Madeleine were putting their lives on the line for. Kira had been on a number of missions lately, and it was a mark of how gravely important they must be that she kept them so confidential. He’d no idea what was going on until the Assembly the other day. And now she was off to the Principal’s office of all places!
Lee hadn’t realised how bad things, and he was annoyed at himself for it. Funny… it was hardly a week ago when Jude and himself were downing ginger beers in the Knight Pub, and suddenly, neither could go anywhere near it- possibly on risk of death. That was another thing- he hadn’t seen Jude around all day. Recently, he’d found him to be a bit of a shoulder to lean on. It wasn’t like with Kira, where Lee told her pretty much everything.
Jude didn’t talk about Lee’s feelings and junk with him. Jude had this miraculous knack for making things seem better.
Take a sad song, and make it better…
He smiled to himself. Madeleine had been the one who first played that song to him. He couldn’t listen to half the songs in the world now without thinking about her; her and her bloody blue eyes.
He hated the fact that he still cared.
Lee sighed, and turned back to his letter. A welcome distraction. Bethany was bound to have something better to say than all this stuff…
Hey, Lee!
It was great hearing from you again. I hate waiting around to write my letters to you. You know me- if there’s something to be done, I just need to do it- right away, or I FREAK. Like this whole wedding thing. It’s driving me bats. Am I the only girl in this entire bloody country that didn’t go to university? I feel like I have no life- my education stopped with Orchid.
Lee, we’ve finally got a date for the wedding! You’ve got to come- we’ve scheduled it for the end of March- the 31st. I still haven’t found my bridesmaid, but Jason’s found a best man! His brother’s agreed to do it. Took a heck of a lot of persuading too- he’s so darn awkward, but he’s just had a baby, so I guess I can forgive it. Oh, Lee, you should see my little almost-niece! She’s so lovely- her name’s Hannah Marie. Isn’t that pretty?
I cannot wait to have a kid of my own! Don’t tell Jason that- he’d freak- but I know I can trust you. I really want to be a mum- isn’t that weird? Growing up I always insisted that I wouldn’t be one- I hit 21 and all I can think about is babies. You’d be a really good uncle. You’ve always been good with children.
I wish you’d come home. Everyone really misses you. Jason was going to make you best man, but his mum got in the way. Old cow. Still, how do you feel about being the usher? I was insistent you have some sort of part to play. It’s been raining a heck of a lot- but what’s new? Scotland or Ireland, it’s all the same! Mum and Dad are over too- they want you to come home too. You don’t have to go to Ireland. I think Mum and Dad are going to move over here! After all, the only thing that kept them in Ireland was Uncle Tom.
Lee, I know why you’re at Orchid right now, and I respect your beliefs, but it doesn’t stop me worrying. I’ve heard some pretty awful rumours about what happened during the last battle. I know you love Kira, but you can stay for her.
Uncle Tom and Aunt Rachel aren’t coming to the wedding, and neither is she, I don’t think I could stand it- they should understand that- but they’ve both been kicking up an awful fuss. Mum’s really upset- she was crying last night, Remember how close her and Aunt Rachel used to be? This whole thing bites. I guess the bad mood was getting to everyone. Jason and I kept arguing.
Lee, you’re so lucky you’re not in love. That must sound really weird! It’s just… they always have so much godforsaken power over you. Jason can make me cry over the stupidest of things. Enjoy it while you can- after all, it happens to everyone eventually.
I miss you. Remember that before you do anything rash, okay?

Your big sis, =)
Lee set down the letter, his heart pounding. God… how he longed to be able to see her and his family again. He missed her too. A hell of a lot. But he’d miss Kira too. He’d miss Jude- Brian- Ellie-
Maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea.
He’d miss them all, but Bethany was wrong about one thing. He was in love, dammit! He loved Madeleine- it was so stupid- so so so stupid, but he did! Bethany was wrong about him being lucky. If you love someone, the very fact they love you too makes the tears are worth it.
He couldn’t take much more of this. He couldn’t stay here with Madeleine.
Kira would just have to accept that.
