Lee pulled himself out of his bed, dragging half the duvet with him. It ripped up from the mattress with a smooth sliding sound; adorning his bare shoulders like a cloak. Dropping it at the bottom of his bed, Lee pulled on his pyjama top and began to make his way towards the bathroom, narrowly avoiding Brian, who was snorely loudly on the floor.
Mike sat up blearily, rubbing his eyes at the sight of Lee. "Hey," he muttered groggily, scratching his arm. "Mornin'."
"Morning," Lee replied vaguely, pulling a fluffy, warm towel out of mid-air. He was a Conjurer. What could he say- it came in handy.
"You okay, mate?" Mike said, a little awkwardly. "Know you've been going through a rough patch..."
"I'm fine," said Lee, clenching his fist then reopening it to find a toothbrush lying in his palm.
"Really?" yawned Mike, all awkwardness gone in a moment, "tha's good... what time's it?"
"7 o' clock."
"Urgh..." Mike moaned wearily, sliding back beneath his duvet. "God forsaken school bell's gonna' go off soon..."
Lee smiled, but didn't reply, heading down the stairs of the Boys Dorms and into the bathroom. Luckily, there wasn't much of a queue. Most guys stayed in bed until it was at least 8.00, but that always meant there was a big rush to get showered and dressed, considering there were so many of them. But... Lee just felt like getting up early today.
Shouldn't lie-in all the time. It was a bad habit anyway.
Lee dropped his towel and clothes by the basin, leaning over cupping some water from the running tap in his hands. He splashed it in his face, sighing in relief as the cool water slid down his cheeks. Looking up, he caught sight of himself in the mirror. Frowning he leant forward, absorbing the boy who stared back at him...
He counted every line- every blemish- and every spot (surprisingly few, he'd been blessed with clear skin), absorbing each one like a good, thick book which you digested slowly as you read it. He had a thin face; a fact he'd not really registered with before. He didn't really look goofy, or weird (unless he pulled this face, haha...), but nor was he... how you say? Hot? Fit? Man-candy?
Darn you, Ellie!
Naah... what had she said once? You could always depend on Ellie to get these things spot-on. Ellie had called him 'cute'. That was it. So... what did that mean? The funny, dopey kind of guy you just wanted to hug?
That wasn't so bad, considering what she referred to Matt as...
Lee knew he wasn't exactly the ideal guy- he was thin and around average height. His hair was thick; an unruly mess which stuck up in odd places and his eyes were as pure blue as Kira's. That was something he supposed he could charm girls with, haha. He could pull some pretty wacky faces, but that wasn't really the point.
He wasn't a conventional kind of attractive.
He was charming. That was nice.
There was no point sitting around; hating himself. Why kick yourself when you're down? So Madeleine had broken up with him, it wasn't the end of the world!
He was fine.
Would be fine.
Now, looking back, he was half-ashamed of his talk with Kira. He felt bad for burdening her with all his crap. No doubt he'd exaggerated half of it; too caught up in the misery of the moment to care.
Yeah, that was it. Lee couldn't possibly feel as bad as that.
He just thought he did.
Yeah.
Okay.
Cool.
How come Madeleine went out with him anyway? He frowned at himself, then turned away, staring across at the empty shower instead. It didn't really make sense, did it? They got along well, yeah, and they had a good few laughs but... they were probably better suited as friends. Madeleine was way out of his league. That wasn't kicking himself when he was down.
That was the truth of it.
Well, it didn't matter. He was getting over her. He'd be fine. Totally, 100% and completely fine. Dandy, haha.
Stop laughing at your thoughts you freak.
Freak... Just embrace it. Embrace everything you are, and learn to like it. Make yourself like it. Force self-control on yourself, put a tap on your emotions, and eventually, it'll just come naturally to you.
And never cry. Guys don't cry anyway.
Why would he cry?!
That's right, look back in the mirror at the little boy you are, and envision the man you want to be. Look in the mirror, and see yourself for what you are.
See yourself afresh, without bias.
Look.
And accept it.
Lee had to learn to accept things as they came. He'd lost Madeleine- accept it.
But I-
Shut up!
That's it. Okay. Fine. Cool. Lee was fine. Totally fine.
Fine, fine, fine, fine, fine.
Stop saying that!
Prune the weeds of childhood which still choke you- they only hold you back. Grow an armour, thick, and heavy- one that'll shield you from everything and everyone. You don't cry. You don't get overly emotionally involved.
Take things as they come.
Acceptance is the key to happiness.
Or something.
And Lee did see. He wouldn't let his vision be clouded over any more by his dreams- his imagination. He'd been a dreamer- he'd dreamt of so many beautiful things with Kira. But he couldn't be that guy anymore. He needed to wake up, and see the world for what it was.
Sure, he could be there- he could laugh and be himself- but always be on guard. Always be ready to dive behind that wall. It was like walking around in a bulletproof vest. You could get hit, but it just bounced right off. It was a simple enough solution- the anti-rotting away in your misery treatment.
Madeleine...
It was over. And that was okay.
It was okay.
I promise it'll be okay...
The bell rang, and Lee was shocked out of his thoughts, heading into the shower.
He got ready, brushed his teeth, calming his tousled hair and headed down to breakfast.
Welcome to your first day in the real world, mate.
It's gonna be a toughie.
