"No..." whispered Kira, sinking down slowly at the table. Total shock was coursing through her, and she was having trouble focusing on the world around her. All there was was Kira and Lee. All there was was the words that had just left his lips, swinging back and forth through the air like a pendulum...
"You're not prepared at all, are you?" mumured Lee softly, sinking down at the table beside her. "Oh, god..."
"I didn't know," she said thickly, "how could I have forgotten? Oh, Lee..."
"Ssh," he said softly, patting her arm awkwardly. "It's ok... I mean, you still have time..."
"Exams!" she cried, slumping at the table and letting out a muffled sob. "One week until our mid-term exams! How can this have happened?"
"You're not the most observative of people," he said, unable to resist a weak smile.
Kira growled at him, throwing the textbook at him. She couldn't believe it. She was never that bad about exams. She usually realised with three weeks to go- and that wasn't that bad! With three weeks, she could cram; easy peasy. But one week? Correction- 6 and 3/4 days- was not enough. She was far too easily distracted when it came to revising. The sun always seemed to shine; how could she be confined to a musty classroom when it was so pretty outside...?
"So, c'mon, Kira, revise!" he said happily, throwing the textbook back. "Wow... look at all that maths..."
"You will die a slow, painful death," she muttered darkly.
"That a fact?" he asked cheerfully.
"A prediction," Kira smiled. "I'm practising for Fortune Telling..."
"You don't have the Sight."
"Maybe I don't need it!"
Lee laughed. "Scary. Very scary. But exams aren't that bad. You know it all already; it's just a matter of reminding yourself."
"I'll pass History, and maybe Art or Shadows, but that's about it."
"Water?"
"You know the Crackpott has it in for me."
He grinned. "Hypnoses?"
"Completely out of pratice."
"English?"
"I can't write!"
"Maths?"
"Or count."
"See, the attitude is your failure," he said, with an air of smugness. "With that attitude, you will get nowhere."
"Maybe the attitude is just something to fall back on in case I do fail," she muttered darkly.
"And is it working?"
"It might, you don't know," Kira sighed heavily. "Do you think Chloe will lend me some of those books?"
"I'll ask her, shall I?" Lee smiled, following Kira's gaze.
Chloe looked up from her books and smiled uneasily at them. Lee and Kira kept their faces blank; their eyes widening simultaneously as they stared onwards. Suddenly looking very worried, Chloe jumped to her feet and ran towards the librarian, dropping about half her books as she did so.
Lee and Kira burst into silent giggles. "That was cruel," Kira laughed.
"I haven't seen it work so well for ages," Lee said slowly. "Been praticing?"
"Last time I was in Cardsdale, Deron and I sat around singing nursery rhymes and in the middle of the village square," Kira sighed remiscently. "It was fun- we got the weirdest looks, so we returned them. We pass the time in the most ridiculous ways- mostly they don't make sense, but- "
"Deron?"
Kira froze, biting her lip. It was too late. She'd said it; and now... now what? Deron was a friend. That's all. Deron was a friend. A friend.
"Who's Deron?"
"A friend of mine," Kira said lightly, then frowned at him. "Didn't I tell you? I did."
"No..." Lee said slowly, his frown matching her's. "And what d'you mean a friend? I know all your friends- and there's no Deron."
"Well, apparently you don't know them all," she said, rolling her eyes. "Why should you?"
Lee shrugged. "Since most of your friends were mine to begin with."
The temperature seemed to slip a couple of notches between them both. Lee pressed his lips together, and immediately began to apologise. He hadn't meant it. Sometimes he just said things, and they didn't make sense. He was being flippant. Stupid. Kira was to ignore him. Besides- what about Madeleine? She was Kira's friend first. And... and...
"You were being honest," she said flatly, gathering up her books. "The truth slips out every so often."
"Oh, Kira, c'mon, I didn't mean anything by it."
"Are you annoyed I didn't tell you about Deron?"
Lee opened his mouth, looking a little scared. "You just said you did tell me."
"Well, I didn't," she replied shortly. "You were right. Again. Annoyed?"
"I don't want an argument!" he cried, a little pleadingly. "You know I hate that- "
"You had one with Madeleine the other day, right?" Kira asked him, straightening up and pulling her bag towards her. "Tell me, that work out ok?"
"I- yes, of course- "
"How'd you resolve it?" she continued coldly, stuffing a few of his books into her bag.
"We just talked."
"Uh huh. Well, I would've screamed. I'm not too good whenever it comes to keeping my temper."
Lee looked completely baffled by this stage. "What does this have to do with anything?"
"You blew me off to talk to her, so why shouldn't I blow you off to talk to Deron?"
Lee's jaw was hanging open slightly. "I didn't- "
"No, you did. See you."
Kira turned on her heel, and walked off out of the library. She knew she was being unfair. She knew she was completely leaving Lee at a total loss. But she couldn't help it. She wanted to get mad. She wanted to be annoyed at something- someone- anyone.
All because he was honest?
Kira was never sure what she felt about the truth. She was just being silly. Over-reacting.
Maybe.
And about right now, Kira knew she didn't want to revise. She wanted to see Deron.
Again.
