Madeleine pushed open the heavy wooden door to the library and blinked.
Heavens, it was huge. She'd rarely been in libraries, which was a shame as she adored books, but her dad owned a pretty impressive collection of classics and Madeleine had worked up a massive collection of all sorts of books.
But a library like this... well, it was awesome. Most of the room was fashioned from creamy white marble, with arches all around the room leading into yet more sections of the library. The room was lit by huge crystal and good chandeliers which dropped from the wonderfully high ceiling, and, as it was nighttime, candles in lamps on each old oak table.
And the amount of books... wow, it was just amazing. She had never seen anything like it.
She placed her bag down beside an embroidered, armchair-style reading chair. She recognised these. Her mum's mum, her Nana Maggie, wasn't a gyspy. In her house, she had had two of these chairs, which sat pride of place by the fireplace in her "library". Madeleine knew enough about them to know that they were old, and expensive.
She walked over to the School History section and found what she was looking for: a book on the History of each "group".
The book that she had found was extremely thick and leather-bound, titled Four Groups, One Resistance: Academics, Carers, Spies, Warriors.
She lifted the book, noting that it was slightly on the heavy side, and carried it over to her seat.
Placing it on the table, she sat down in the old, comfortable seat and opened the book at the Warriors section.
She saw what she expected to see, about battle and preparations, self-defence, the like.
In times of war, the Warrior group has been known to defend the school from the opposing armies.
Well, that was a given.
The more she read, the more she was convinced that her parents were not going to like this one bit. And with good reason. What if she ended up like Shaun? What if she, her parents' only remaining child, was also murdered by the enemy?
No, they were going to hate this.
But already, Madeleine was starting to get excited. Bloodlust, her dad would have said. Stephen had escaped the fighting gene, but it had come through even strong in Madeleine and Shaun. And Madeleine was looking forward to the battles, to the defense of her side in the battle.
And revenge.
