It was too late for that. All Lee had left to do now was pray. And he did pray. But it brought him little comfort. And it scared him slightly, as well, because... what if he prayed, and the worst still came about? It didn't bear thinking about. Madeleine... Maddie. He'd already let her down. He felt it- he knew it. Lee was supposed to be her husband one day. He was supposed to protect her. Why had he let her go out on that jog? Why hadn't he gone, too? He was so mad, all the time, now. Thinking about every single possible way this whole mess could have been prevented. He was a Spy, for God's sake- why hadn't he discovered their plots to kidnap her? What the hell kind of Spy missed something like that?! And that led him back to Kira. Kira, Kira, bloody Kira. Kira, as Head of the Spies, should have found out if there was a plot like that. It was her duty. It was her point. What kind of Head was she anyway? She was no Head at all. Not compared to Will, or to Macy. And she was certainly nothing to Maddie. "Talk is easy," Lee finally said, bitterly, "you should know, Will... hope is for fools."

"Then I am a complete and utter fool. At least I am hoping. Hoping and praying, and if hoping isn't getting us anywhere then neither is praying. It's not like praying will do anything. At least both are better than sitting or walking around in despair and hatred. Than- than giving up altogether!" Will sighed and shook her head...again, "I can't imagine anything worse than someone giving up on you.." And that's what Lee had done, at least it looked that way to Will. He'd given up on thinking that Madeleine would ever come back. That his fiancée was not coming back. Poor Madeleine. "Do you think Madeleine would have give up on hope if you were in her place and she in yours?" wait..was the point in her asking these questions? He wasn't listening. Not properly, "Forget that question. Is there any point in me being here? Should I just leave you here to mope?" Even if he said yes, she wasn't going to move. He needed someone there to talk to, even if he was to wrapped up in depressing emotions to know this.

Lee laughed suddenly. The sound was uneven, unnatural and ugly in his mouth. It didn’t fall out right- all the notes came in the wrong order. “You sound like Jude, or something, Will.” He remembered when he’d sat by Maddie’s side, day by day, last year when she lay in that coma. He remembered his fear- his feelings- very clearly. It was strange. Every time something happened to Madeleine, he expected it to be the same. Things happened so often, he expected to be prepared. But it never was, and he never was. Not ever. And that fact got to him. This time was different because… well, he supposed he’d been lulled into a false sense of security. There hadn’t been a battle in so long. For a while, Orchid Hill had seemed… safe. So safe. He remembered Jude coming to see him last time. He remembered what he’d told him about Ailith. Look at them, now. Jude and Ailith. No ups and downs. No trauma. No freaking drama. The epitome of a happy, functional couple. God. How lucky they were. Finally looking around at Will, Lee felt some of his resolve break, and he was forced to nod slowly. “I haven’t given up on her, Will.” He hadn’t. She was right. He shouldn’t. Hope was dangerous. That what his head was telling him. Hope was dangerous. But his heart wouldn’t let go of it. “I’m just…” he cast about, searching for his words, “I’m just scared.”

Well that was good to hear. “I’m just…” he cast about, searching for his words, “I’m just scared.” Nodding, Will spoke softly, "I know, Lee. We all are. I am. I can't relate to how scared you feel, I'm not going to lie." and she couldn't. She couldn't just tell him I know exactly howyou feel, Lee. I know exactly what you're going through and everything will be fine, you'll see. She wouldn't lie. Yes, she had been scared when they broke into her house and murdered her dad. But it wasn't the same situation. She'd found out what had happened to him. Lee couldn't see. Nobody could. "I don't think anybody can. I won't even try. It must be horrible but I think...I think we just have to believe, even if we don't know what's going on, I think if we believe that the outcome will be...not good but.." no, it wasn't working out for her, "Just believe." She looked away from him. Wait...did he say? Did he say I sounded like Jude!?[/b] "Lee?...How in the hell do I sound like Jude?" she asked she raised her eyebrows and stared at him with a What-In-The-Hell are you on about look.

Her question surprised him. He thought it would be obvious. "Oh, y'know," he sort of shrugged. "You just sound like... you're trying to make it better." Hey, Jude... Don't be afraid... You were made to go out and get her. The minute you let her under your skin- Then you begin to make it better..." Will was scared, too. Yeah, they were all scared. Lee was so scared. He hadn't given up on Maddie, he knew that. But he was close to giving up on the school- on giving up on Orchid. They didn't do anything. They wouldn't do anything at all. And Lee thought... he thought by now... at least... it felt like... It felt like he'd also given up on Kira. "I'm sorry for snapping at you, Will," he said finally. "I know you're scared, too. It wasn't fair of me to... snap... like that."

Great...I sound like Jude now... she was less than please by that. She didn't dislike Jude but she couldn't say she liked him either. Sometimes that frustrated her. She'd like to be friends with Jude, she really really would but she didn't think it'd work. They were just to different. Plus the incident hadn't helped... "It's ok Lee, I can't really hold it against you," she gave him a half-hearted smile, "Just as long as you...ah what the hell, yell at me all you want if it helps, it's better than bottling it up. I would know." she patted his hand before taking her own back, "Everyone's under stress, everyone. I'm surprised they haven't all snapped and been taken to a mental hospital...I'm surprised I haven't broken down yet." She guessed she shouldn't really. All the Carers were trained to deal with the patients problems first and their own later. It was the only way they'd be able to get anything done. She looked around them. It was dead silent when they didn't talk apart from the steady beating of the monitors the patients were hooked up to. She hoped they'd all live. But nobody could tell the future. Not even the psychics. As much as they'd like to. She sighed.

"I'm really surprised..." Lee spoke suddenly; and his voice seemed unwelcome in the peaceful silence that had spread between them, "that whenever I snapped at Kira like that, some of your lot didn't cart me off to a mental home." Since they were all so obviously on her bloody side. "Don't send me mixed messages, by the way," he tried laughing again, but it didn't really work. "Telling me not to tell, then telling me to yell... doesn't make sense."

Will just looked at him. Does he really want to go to a mental hospital? "Hahaha, sorry," she bowed her head before scratching the back of it, "I guess I didn't really think about that. My head's all scrambled up inside at the moment, so I'm not really thinking all that straight. Then again, when do I ever really make sense?" Ok, she did make sense quite a bit of the time. At least she thought she did.

He smiled weakly, but made no reply. He wondered what Madeleine was doing right now. What she was thinking… feeling… if she was breathing- No. Don’t start that again. This was still, on some level, he decided, Kira’s fault. It made everything seem that fraction easier when he had someone to blame for what was happening. For why it was happening. He could have saved her. Lee couldn’t let go of that stubborn notion. He could’ve saved her. Or at least, he could have tried. Will had pacified him for now, but he couldn’t shake the fear that the moment her calming influence was gone, he would go right back to square one. Logic was no ally of his now- logic only listed off all the reasons why Madeleine would or wouldn’t be dead yet. And then there was that other fear- that fear of what had happened to Macy Deltine- “Will…” he spoke slowly, unwilling to let a tremor break his voice, “what if… you’re right… and she gets back… but she comes back and she’s been… hurt by them?” He said these last three words with the utmost delicacy, his large dark eyes watching her closely, trying to convey his meaning.

“Will…” he spoke slowly almost hesitantly, “what if… you’re right… and she gets back… but she comes back and she’s been… hurt by them?” God. Right. Ok. What if she came back like Macy did..beaten, raped...broken. It took her a long time to recover. I'm not even sure she still has, then again who would after that.. Will kept looking at Lee, not really knowing how to answer him. She wouldn't lie. Sighing she fidgeted, re-adjusting her position, "Well, Olivia or I will heal her first of all but after...she might not want to talk, at least not for a while...Lee, I don't think it will happen, Besides you know as well as anyone that she can fight for herself even without her powers. I don't think it's wise to think it's wise to have those thoughts, I know it's hard to keep them away but it won't help to think like that. She's a strong girl, she can fend for herself," Will knew she wasn't really helping at all, "But she'll have you and Russ." What if what Lee is thinking turns out to be true. What if...no. "Try not to think about that, ok? I don't think it's good for your mental health at the moment. You need to stay as relaxed as you possibly can, Lee" she didn't break eye contact with him. No, she probably wasn't giving him much hope or advice but she was only one person. What more could she do than try to reassure him and everyone else..including herself.

"She's a strong girl, she can fend for herself..." There were a lot of strong girls out there that... it happened to, though. Maddie was unique- completely so, Lee knew this- but if someone... that was, if someone really wanted to hurt her... and they wouldn't be on their own. What if they had help? What if she couldn't defend herself- if they- If. If. Only an if. Not a fact. Not a truth. Only an if. Will said she could heal her. But you couldn't heal something like that- couldn't wipe it out or erase it. It would always be there. Lee had seen Macy- sometimes still saw Macy- and he thought... he thought... He didn't know what. What did Macy feel? Right now, whereever she was... did she fear the worst, too? What kind of memories must this bring back for her? What kind of... what did... Oh, God. Oh, God. Oh, God, not that. Don't let that happen to her. Not Maddie. Not my Maddie. "I am... trying..." he muttered softly. "I'm trying really hard, Will." Please... God...

I know, Lee, I know. She sighed as she thought this. There was nothing she could say really. Nothing she could do. She felt utterly helpless. "Lee.." nope, nothing she could say. She just held his hand loosely again. Trying to comfort him. I hate feeling like this. I want to help my friends, dang it! Lee was soo down right now. Wait! She could do something. "I'll be back in a minute or two Lee." and she let go and exited the room. She jogged back in the direction she had come from with Paul, to the where the nurses station was. She flicked through papers until she found the ones she was looking for. Grabbing a pen she filled out all the necessary bits she had do herself and then jogged back to where Lee was lying. She dragged the beds table up to him and placed the forms down in front of him, "Sign."

Confused, Lee refused Will's pen, conjuring his own black biro out of mid-air. Glancing up questioningly at her, he bent his head over the papers and gave them a quick scan-read. Unbidden and all of a sudden, he felt a great sense of relief- of gratitude- cascade over him. He signed his name in a quick, bold, black scribble. "There," he said, handing them back. "There it is." Thank you.

He was smiling. It was a tiny one but he was smiling. She made him smile. She took the forms off of him and smiled at him, "I'll be right back, I just have to go put these through the database." As she walked down the corridor she couldn't help but feel somewhat relieved. She'd managed to calm Lee down, a bit. Not muhc. But a bit. Will didn't like seeing her friends unhappy. One of the reasons she was so unsure about going and talking to him. She didn't want to upset Olivia. She didn't want upset Jack either. So she'd have to wait. She copied everythng into the database and waited for about ten minutes to process and make sure it was there before going to the filing cabinet and started to sift through the folders trying to find Lee's one. When she found it she took it out and put the forms in before siging another one and putting it all into the file and back into the cabinet. Heading for his ward again she stopped a thought occurring to her. Taking a detour she headed through a different ward to a supply room where patients belongings were being kept. She found the box with Lee's clothing in it and grabbed them and ran back to his bed. "Here," she said breathless, "put these on and you're a free man."

Lee took the clothes weakly from her, nodding. He turned quickly, and then said, stupidly slowly, "I'll... close the curtains." Roughly, he tugged them around his bed and pulled his hated Hospital Wing robes off. Tugging the T-shirt and jeans on he'd been wearing when he'd first been sedated, Lee then folded the robes and set them on the bed. He re-opened the curtains, and when he did, he found Will standing there. Stepping forward, he took her hand again, this time in a handshake. "Thank you," he said shortly. Then let go.
