Lee was moving very quickly through the corridors- lighter on his feet than he thought he was capable of. The image of Levi and Madeleine... kissing- accept the truth, accept the bloody truth- had been burned into his eyes forever. He couldn't get it out of his head. He was upset. And so darn angry! He couldn't believe this. Where was his bullet-proof vest? Why hadn't it protected him?
He was weak. That's what it came down to. He'd no self-control.
Blurred figures whizzed past him. Was he running? Yes. He hadn't realised. Slow down, Lee.
Why should I?
Almost in defiance of his mind, his legs sped forward, every muscle beginning to sear with the heat of it. He hurt- he couldn't explain it to himself. This was a new kind of hurt- different from when Madeleine had broke up with him. Last time, he'd felt like he deserved it- he'd lay down and taken it. This time... this time something was different. Because despite the fact that he pretty much hated Levi with every fibre of his being, he couldn't believe Madeleine would do that. They'd just broken up, for goodness' sake!
Unless that was why...?
NO!
And they kept laughing. He veered off to the left, slumping against the wall and panting, uncaring of who should see him. Everyone would know by tomorrow anyway...
Levi Ryder is going out with Madeleine Baudelaire!
Stop LAUGHING...
Their faces swam before him, Madeleine's head resting on Levi's shoulder. His arm was around her, pulling her closer and closer... Lee's heart pulsed with unchecked jealousy, swirling green and red before him. Madeleine smiled almost pityingly at him.
"Poor Lee," she sighed theatrically. "I feel so bad. Awk, no. Look at you!"
"He just needs to come to grips with reality," Levi smirked, squeezing his prize. "I've got you now."
"You sure have," she cackled, raising her lips to his, her mouth opening...
Lee cried out, banging his head against the wall and causing a million stars to erupt before his eyes. The image of Levi's tongue down Madeleine's throat exploded before him, and his eyes swam. With tears?
Tears of pain. Obviously. Automatic reaction. Couldn't help that. His head was now throbbing all over. He put it between his legs, rubbing it fiercely.
His mobile fell from his pocket, and he flipped it open, his fingertips whizzing across the keypad as he texted Kira, telling her exactly what had happened. But as he pressed the little 'Send' button, a sinking feeling came over him. He'd thought it would make feel better to tell someone.
Instead it'd felt like a sharp slap in the face.
He just needs to come to grips with reality...
"Lee?" Chloe was kneeling beside him, looking alarmed. Lee stared up at her blearily, the pain in his head now a numb, steady throb.
"Hi."
"You look awful..." she murmured, biting her lip- and Lee saw genuine concern cross her face. So she cared about how he felt? Humph. Wrong girl. Great.
"I feel awful," he growled, then snorted. "Feel like hell, actually. Thanks."
"Lee...?"
Something in her expression softened him. But he would not break down. He was better than that. He wouldn't kick himself into that grave again. He was Lee. Lee was fine.
LEE WAS FINE!
See?!
"Sorry," he smiled warmly, and suddenly, his hands had reached out to take hers. "Chloe, I'm... I dunno what to say..."
"What is it?" Her eyes were as wide as coins.
"At the camping trip... I made a mistake," he muttered, shaking his head. It was true. It was deliriously obvious to him now.
It'd all been a mistake.
Just some stupid trick of fate. It had it in for him- destiny wanted to make a fool of him. And he'd fallen for it- head over heels. See a pretty girl and lose it all.
Checkmate...
"Whenever we were in the forest," he said softly, looking at her. "I shouldn't have... I was wrong. I wish I could go back. Madeleine... I mean..."
"Lee?" Her voice was tentative- almost hopeful... before he'd taken it away. He'd done that. Just like Madeleine had toyed within him before going for the kill, he'd probably taunted Chloe in the same way. She didn't deserve that. No-one did.
"Chloe," he said softly, and then he felt his head give another painful throb. He didn't know what else to say. Or what to do. So- desperately- he leant forward and wrapped his arms around her, kissing her.
Immediately, she responded, slipping into his embrace as though it was the most natural thing in the world- almost a relief. And Lee welcomed her warmth; her closeness to him. He welcomed the way her hand moved up his chest- the way her hair fanned silkily across the back of his hand.
He was drowning in it. Desperate to feel something that didn't make him want to scream out in rage or hatred. Something that left his eyes burning so much that it spread through his body. Chloe's touch burned him- her lips hurt him- as though they bit him, not kissed him.
He just hurt. Wasn't that pathetic?
After several seconds, they broke apart, Lee nearly gasping for breath. Chloe, however, looked positively enthralled. She edged closer, draping herself across his chest and sighing to herself. A small, happy sigh.
How cheesy. Aww... had he made all her dreams come true?
Now he felt sick.
He couldn't do this.
Too late.
But she isn't Madeleine.
He knew that. But he wasn't Levi. This wasn't Lee and Madeleine- that was the way things used to be. This was Lee and Chloe.
She wasn't Madeleine, no matter how much he wished it.
She wasn't Madeleine.
That was the point.
