Sitting on the window ledge of her Biology room, Will was looking at the forest. Her ruined forest. She was still furious with the Jack. Even if he had had no choice at all…
She was glad the fighting was over but they still needed to get Madeleine back. All the Carers were alright, a few minor injuries to the field Carers. The Academics had done their job and the few who had telepathy kept Jack up on what had been happening around him. All the groups were relatively fine; a few deaths in the Warriors and Spies altogether and of course Madeleine would be furious with Jack for going against her orders to let the Spies join the fighting.
There was only one person she was worrying about. One person who looked she had been torn up and shredded after.
She couldn’t be physically hurt which only left mentally.
Something had happened during the battle.
When Will had seen her face, her mind raced to only one thing… Jack.
But he was fine. So what had happened? As far as Will knew, the girl had no family at the school. Madeleine wasn’t dead. She should be happy they had won. If it had been shock, wouldn’t it be over by now?
It’s not like she hadn’t seen war and mass amounts of bloodshed before this. So why should she be in shock for this one?
And she knew something had happened between her and Jack recently. People watching and profile were what Will did in her spare time. She was very perceptive. She liked to see how people acted and how they felt by their body language and their words and how they used them in a certain context.
The forest was healing, slowly but surely. She could see a few Warriors and Spies helping clear the debris. It was a cold, frost and slightly misty morning and the sun’s rays were just about reaching this part of the earth.
Fiddling with her necklace, Will leaped off the ledge and started to fall through the air before using the elemental fire power to stop her from breaking her legs and any other bone in her body. The amount of charred wood and leaves nearly made her cry.
As she walked towards the lake, she spotted one tiny green shoot appearing amongst all the ash. There was always going to be hope for Orchid and its dweller s. They would fight to the end and never give up. The Heads – Kira, Macy, Madeleine and herself would be here to the end and give everyone support.
She held a piece of paper tightly in her hand. Evan had written to her. He said he was going to come and visit her when he had the time. He was a very busy boy and was currently residing in her parents’ home back in Germany. They had gotten on friendly enough terms that Will had let him use the house until he got himself fixed with one of his many friends. She liked Evan. He was a lot like her grandpa in a way, and her mother in the other.
He had the brown hair of her mother’s grandfather, but the facial features of her dad when he was younger. His personality was brilliant and he somehow knew how to reassure her in the right way, which was weird in the extreme to her as nobody, but her parents, had known how to do that. Though in some cases, even they had been at a loss as how to cope with her and to calm her down.
Evan was quite laid bad and would never lose his temper quickly. He was extremely patient and a mathematician, whereas she was more creative; illogical as most are.
As she stood on the sand; the waves licking the top of her Converse, Jack appeared on the opposite side, bending over for a few seconds before walking around for a few minutes. A small smile never appeared on her face as it usually did when she saw him about. Instead her frown deepened. Even though it had not been his fault in any way and he had had no choice in the matter, Will still was angry that the forest that she and so many other Carers had cared for and laboured hours over had been destroyed.
Even as she thought this a tree exploded somewhere to the right, behind her. She looked over at it and saw a huge gaping hole in its centre.
“Great. Just bloody perfect!” she grumbled. She was seething deeply. She was adding to the forest’s healing process.
She glanced over at where Jack was… had been. He was now gone. Thank goodness for that. Her thoughts started to get more colourful and inappropriate in English and German. A twig snapped behind her and she just ignored it, guessing who had snapped it.
“Will? Hey,” his voice sounded. The butterflies she usually got and the heart racing was non existant. She pretended she hadn’t heard anything.
“Hello, Will?” Shuffling and he came into her peripheral view. A tap on her shoulder and still no inner reaction occurred, “Will? You there?” and a wrap on the head was received.
Sighing angrily, she turned furiously to face him, with nothing but a cold, white hot stare, “What? What do you want, Jack?”
Taken aback by her hostility, Jack was lost for words for no more than 10 seconds or so, “Er… someone’s not in a good mood, today.”
Will growled and stormed away into the nearest trees and delved deeper into the forest with Jack following no more than a few paces behind her. Suddenly she stopped and he walked past her, not having anticipating her stopping.
“What’s up with you?” he asked, clearly confused.
“Me? Nothing is wrong with me Jack Trove. I’m absolutely perfect,” she answered crisply.
“That so?” One of his eyebrows raised. “Then why that tome?”
“I’m not being hostile.” She retorted heatedly.
They stood facing each other. Him, with his eyebrow raised and with a look that portrayed the two phrases Is-that-so and the sarcastic Yeah-right. Her glaring fiercely and a look of pure irritation on her face.
Truth be told she was grieving or mourning if you like that term better. It was the anniversary of her dad’s death and she was stuck in this place and not able to go to his grave that she had done every year since both of their deaths.
That was why she was pissed.
Sighing, this time in resignation she relaxed her face into that of an apologetic frown and slid to the ground and put her forehead on her knees.
“Sorry. It’s just… I am pissed off at the moment,” she shook her head and wiled herself not to fall apart completely.
“Yeah…” he chuckled slightly. “Thought so… Er… is there anything – I mean, I dunno, like – can I do anything?”
“Not unless you can teleport.”
“No – I can’t,” he shuffled but stayed in the same place. “Eh.. d’you wanna talk?”
“With him, yes.”
She lost him as she so often did. That was one thing Will did best. Kept talking like everyone knew what or who she was talking bout.
“What – me?” He opened his arms with a cheeky grin, obviously trying to lift the spirits up. “Well, hey, baby, today’s your luck day – I’m right here!”
“It’s the anniversary of my dad’s death, Jack,” she told him bluntly.
That brought him up short.
“Oh…”
Will didn’t expect him to say anything. No one knew… not even Tamika. Only her family back in Germany knew and quite possibly Evan. It wouldn’t surprise her if he did.
“It’s okay. I’m fine, so did you follow me for any particular reason or just to talk?”
Jack stood there before scratching the back of his head. He’d never get Will. Never. She was far too random for him to even try and keep up.
“No reason really. Did you want to be alone?” his voice was cheery albeit confused.
Did she want to be alone?
Had she been alone enough?
Could she stand to be alone much longer?
Finally she lifted her head up and looked at him for another long minute. “No, no I don’t.”
“Alright then,” he sat down beside her.
“So, how’ve you been since the battle and… such?” Will asked throwing a twig to the other side where it glanced off a tree.
They sat in silence while Jack either refused to answer her question or was thinking of his answer. He still had not replied after about two minutes so she took as he wasn’t going to answer her.
“Ok…” the school’s bell rang in the distance but Will had no intention of going to class today. She was going to miss them and spend most of the day in Blueberg, trying to rectify as much of the damage as possible. She didn’t care if she got in trouble, she could fix the records to say she had been in the hospital wing tending to pupils and teachers and she had no doubt that some of the people she knew would vouch for her.
“Guess we should be getting to class,” Jack finally said.
“Hmm.” Will answered in agreement. A hand was in her eyesight. Jack had got up when she was thinking, “I’m actually not going to class. I’m staying right here. In the forest.”
Anger was building up in her again. A very common occurrence, but this time it was her way of grieving. She didn’t feel comfortable crying anymore unless she was absolutely alone.
She grabbed his hand and with his help, got to her feet.
“What are you in next?”
“Maths. You?”
“Elemental.”
They walked towards the lake in silence. There was a light breeze that ruffled the leaves around them and it felt nice and cold against their faces.
“Will?”
“Mmm?” She turned her head towards him.
He looked down at her, “Sorry bout the forest. Really I am.”
“It’s okay. It’s not your fault and I’m not going to hold it against you. Just forget about it. It will recover in time to its own beauty of green and all its colours. Though the animals lost many of their own and their homes.” Her rant got more sour and harsh as she spoke her mind.
Jack chuckled before actually laughing out loud.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“No. What’s so funny? I want to know.”
“Will?”
“Yes?”
“You’re such a hippy.”
“Yeah I know.”
“Jack?”
“Yes?”
“You’re such an air head.”
Both of them laughed as they emerged from the forest on the side of the lake. Will stared up at one of their towers of school while Jack stared off to where the rugby pitches should be.
“I guess this is where I leave you,” Will sighed.
“Yep.”
“Well, bye then.”
“Bye.”
They went off in their separate ways, Jack to his class and Will to tend to the forest.
