Madeleine came out of her Shape-shifting exam with a worried frown on her face. Great - she'd done awfully in that exam. The examiner had asked her to turn into a tabby cat - and as she did so, she forgot to focus on the tail - and so, her tabby had no tail.
Urgh, she'd so failed it. How on earth did she do that? She was a great shape-shifter, helped by the fact that her mum (also a shape-shifter) had been teaching her to do this since she was about five. She'd been transforming into all types of cats for years, and the one time it was actually important, she'd blown it.
And as Head, she needed to keep her marks up to the high standard that was set - and all of the other Heads were so smart. She was so screwed.
To her surprise, Levi was outside the hall, leaning against the stairs. He smiled at her. "How'd it go?"
Too annoyed at herself to remember she was shunning him, she grimaced. "Not well."
"What went wrong?" he asked, looking concerned, and not smug.
Wait... what was wrong with him today? Usually he'd be thrilled that Madeleine hadn't done so well in a test.
She shrugged. "I just lost my head a bit."
"Aw, I'm sure you did fine," he said, smiling sympathetically.
Madeleine narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "What do you want?"
"What? Nothing! Who said I wanted something?" he replied, affronted.
"You're being nice to me... and you're smiling," she added, as he grinned. "You don't normally smile at me."
He laughed. "I'm a natural smiler, don't question it."
She smiled grudgingly.
"See? Smiling feels good, doesn't it?"
"Who are you and what have you done with Levi Ryder?"
"Oh, this is he," he grinned. "You just haven't seen this side of him yet."
Before she could answer, Lee came up the corridor behind her, greeting her with a quick kiss on the cheek.
"Hey you," she said, smiling warmly.
"Heya," he said, smiling at her. "How was Shape-shifting?"
She groaned. "Not good. Lee, this is Levi from my Air Control class, Levi, this is ... my boyfriend Lee..."
God, the word sounded so good. And from his smile, she could guess that Lee was also getting a thrill from the prepossession.
However Levi's smile had disappeared, and a thin scowl was on his face. "Hi," he said shortly.
"Hi," Lee said politely, then turned to Madeleine. "What happened?"
"My cat had no tail," she said miserably.
He frowned. "Isn't there a type of cat with no tail? A Manx cat or something?"
Madeleine gaped at him, the realisation dawning on her. "I... that's... you're right. Wow. Thank goodness."
"You might even get marks for creativity," he chuckled.
"Well, I won't push it," she said, frowning as she glanced at Levi, who was now scowling profoundly.
"Well, I'll leave you two," Levi said abruptly, walking away before he finished the sentence. "See you, Madeleine."
Bewildered, Madeleine called after him, "O... kay..."
Honestly, what was up with him?
