Macy sat by a window on a ledge that she had found down the main corridor. She was reading 'Lord of the Flies' by William Golding. She stopped and looked out through the dirty glass. She could see the forest and in the distance, mountains. The grounds where so beautiful. She continued to read before be interrupted.
"Do you have a date for the dance tonight?" She looked up and saw a guy standing by her. He had dark hair, and had a bit of weight, but wasn't fat, it was more muscle.
"Excuse me, what?" She said, sounding rude.
"Um..do you have someone to go with to the dance tonight?" He asked again. She froze the page she was on, and set it down beside her.
"Okay, how many girls have you asked out before me?"
"Um..three..."
"so. I'm your last resort?"
"Yeah, pretty much." She liked guys who just said something straight up, and wouldn't tip-toe around it. But she wouldn't give in that easily.
"And how did you know that I hadn't been asked yet?"
"Well, all the other girls who have been asked, are running round like freaks, getting ready. Even though it's tonight.."
She sighed and looked outside the window again.
"Okay, tell me three things: What's your name, what's your favorite book and band?" He stopped for a second. Hopefully not to think what his name was.
"Well, my name is Caleb, but my friends call me Holden, my favorite book is 'Catcher in the Rye' and that's why they call me Holden, and my favorite band is probably The Killers."
"I love the 'Catcher in the Rye'! But why do they call you Holden? Are you some depressed teen who hates the world?"
"Um.. not really, like I hate fakes and posers and people like that, but, um a few years ago, I was kind of obsessed with the book. We all have nicknames from books, like there's Harry, Winston, Tom, people like that."
Macy laughed. A geek. "Do you have a red hunting hat, then?"
He paused and smiled. "You bet. So, what's you're name?
Macy pretended to be shocked. "You ask out a girl as your last resort and don't even know her name?!"
"I'm..sorry...?"
She laughed. "I'm Macy. I'm in the Academics, and a total geek."
"Oh, yeah, I saw you in the Assembly this morning. So, you're the new head?"
She smiled and sighed. "Okay, Mr Caulfield. Meet me at the bottom of the staircase at 6.45pm. And wear something nice! I am not going with someone who clashes with me!" He smiled and looked at the book that she was reading.
"I love that book." He said.
"Me too! I'm re-reading it...for the fifth time..."
So, they sat there getting to know each other better, Macy and the kid who reviled her geeky-ness.
