Estella walked quietly into her Chemistry room, clutching her bag, almost in defense, from the crowds of people that were filing throughout the corridor. She was still trying to get used to going to a school, let alone one with students like her, Gifteds. There were many times that she wanted to give up, and go back to her dorm, but she made herself keep going, pretending that it'll get better over the day. Her sister, Magdalena, was settling in fine, and had made some friends, whom Estella wasn't too sure of, when going through their thoughts, but she wouldn't say anything. It was also very strange being with a lot of new people all at once, and Estella now avoided places that she knew would be busy such as the dining room. Her head was constantly sore, with all the voices in it, and it hardly gave her time to think for herself.
She walked over to her chosen seat by the window that overlooked the walled gardens, and set down her bag on the floor, and the books on the desk. Before she had the chance to sit down, she recoginsed the mental voice of the boy who sat beside her, coming up the corner. His name was Toby, and he was slightly shorter than she was, with light, feathery hair, but he talked. A lot. And tried to always start up a conversation with her, which she usually tried to end as soon as it began.
In a split second, he was sitting in the seat next to her, on account of his super-speed, with his hands folded on his lap.
"Hi! How are you, are you ready for some Chemistry?" He asked, thinking that what he had said was rather funny. Estella slowly nodded, her eyes locked on the book in front of her. He looked at her for a second, waiting for a verbal response, but soon enough, put his attention towards the boy who was sitting on the other side of him.
Estella's head began to hurt, when one of the strangest minds that she had heard entered the room. His name was Steve, and his head was so- active. He always seemed to be thinking about strange memories, mixed with fantasies, and other things that Estella could not put a name to, or describe.
"Right, hello class, can someone from each table collect in the homework?" The teacher, Professor Lesley said, standing up from her chair. She had not been having a good morning, and had just had a fight with a Professor of Air Control, and she was now replaying the fight in her head, lingering on some parts for a few seconds. Her mind then changed to her class plan, remembering that she had written an experiment on the board. She sighed, and began to compose herself, before getting into 'teaching mode' that she called it.
"Estella? Do you have a pen I can borrow?" Toby asked her, breaking her concentration.
Good, she'll have to answer that. Why does she never say anything? All I can do is just keep trying to get her to talk, but it'll happen soon, I'll just...
Estella opened up her pencil case, and took out a black ball point, and handed it to him, trying to drone out his mental ramblings.
"There, is black okay?" She asked, taking him slightly by surprise. She ignored out whatever he was saying after that, and began drifting in and out of the other student's minds.
"...Okay, so, you can get your equipment from around the room, and if anyone has any questions, than you can come up and ask. Remember that you're being graded here, so take down notes of what you're doing and show your results..." Professor Lesley continued, leaning back on her desk. Estella was only half listening to the instructions. When the teacher was finished, she began to stand up to collect some of the things that they needed for the experiment, but a second later, Toby had run around the room, and had gotten all that they needed.
"Oh, thanks. You didn't need to do that, I could have gotten some." She said, placing the Bunsen burner under the tripod.
"Oh, its fine." He said, moving very fast, completing the experiment. The good thing about Toby was that he was good at Chemistry, and didn't mind doing everything himself. Estella stood to the side, watching the blur of his hands, while occasionally taking some notes. Toby was pleased with himself, and how she was letting him do the experiment himself. Now and again he would say some results which she would write down, not actually sure what they were for.
Finally Professor Lesley told them to put away the equipment, which took Toby a total of three seconds to do.
"So, how do you like Orchid Hill?" He asked Estella, which she had been waiting for, as he had been planning to ask her for a few days, now.
"It's okay." she replied, putting her pencils back into their case.
"Oh..um, have you made any friends?" He quickly asked one of his backup questions, when she didn't say anything more.
"I don't know, I'm not really used at meeting new people. The people here are nice, but I just haven't really connecting with anyone yet." She answered, looking away. A mixed reaction came from Toby's mind, initially thinking about how he was her only friend, but then again, 'anyone' would have included him. He finally gave up for another day, trying to make conversation with her, and began thinking about the english homework that he had not done for a class, later that day.
Eventually the bell rang, meaning Estella could get out of there as soon as possible. Knowing that Toby would, again try to talk to her, she quickly became invisible when he wasn't looking, and walked out as quickly as she could, to his confusion.
Safely in the corridor, she reappeared, startling a few people, and headed towards her next class, Weather Control and Meteorological Studies. Still not convinced as to her sister's words, of "You'll fit in fine, and actually enjoy it!", she walked on, trying to avoid eye contact with anyone she passed.
