Tamika shuffled down the hallway to her room, luggage lagging behind her, occasionally causing her to trip. She wasn't in the best of moods, but not because of coming back to school. That was a light at the end of the tunnel. No, her mood was caused by summer. It had been her worst for years. Even worse than the summer she crashed her scrambler and ended up with her leg in a cast for 5 months.
This summer, she ended up somehow in Switzerland for a month, where she used her little knowledge of french and german to befriend a couple of people she met just to have even a floor to sleep on. Or crash partys with them to stay happily drunk (During one party, she mistakenly agreed to marry some guy, a lovely fella named Twitch. Since she left Switzerland, they started planning the wedding via text).
This summer, she lost her best friend. And learned that you never really appreciate something until it was gone. On their way down through Luxembourg, whilst strolling through a park, she noticed Owlie had gone suspiciously quiet, even for a public place. Further inspection and a ridiculous vet bill told Tamika what she already suspected. Her best friend was dead. Her little pain, who despite everything, was always there for her when something happened. The vet told her it was a natural death as he was an old owl, but there was something about that she didn't really believe. Normally, a death wouldn't be so upsetting to her, she could just talk to his spirit but... He wasn't there. He wasn't at grans, she asked Joselie did she feel any spirits, but there was nothing. So aside from making friends and getting the lend of some dudes scrambler for a couple of weeks, summer was hazy. And now, school - home - was the biggest relief possible.
Tamika's room door was already slightly open, so she was able to nudge it the rest of the way with her foot and dump her bags onto her bed in half a minute. Grabbing her phone from one of the discarded bags, she headed down to the gardens, writing a text as she went. Before she could either save or send the text a phonecall came through.
"Scheisse!" She screeched, earning dirty looks from those walking down the hallway. She pressed the answer button on her phone and tried to put as much venom as possible in her voice, "What?!"
"Mika? Geez, who rained on your parade?"
Tamika now felt slightly guilty, "Uh, hey Brad. What's up?"
"Well I, I just thought I should let at least you know I'm not coming back to Orchid. My parents can't afford to send me over and I'm just going to learn from trial and error. I'm gonna.. I'm gonna really miss you Tamika. I'll still email you and everything though. I gotta go now, mum needs a hand in the garden."
She nodded her head, but then remembered he couldn't see her, "Yeah, um... Yeah... I'll speak to you soon then..."
They exchanged goodbyes and Tamika continued her way to the gardens, mumbling to herself.
"This is okay... I don't have Owlie, I don't have Brad and won't have Josh soon, but it will be okay..." She muttered over and over, doing some breathing exercises to calm herself down. When she got to the gardens, she flopped down by a big oak tree and put her head in her hands, wondering why everything had to happen now.
