Macy walked into the cafe in Cardsdale, Steve a few steps behind her. She could hear the music from walking down from the school, but she didn't realise that they were following it.
As they entered the coffee shop, she couldn't recognize it. All the tables had been pushed to the side, to create a dance floor, and even though there wasn't any smoking allowed, there was a strange haze over the room. A jazz band were onstage, and at that time, the clarinet player and drummer were doing passionate duet, which wasn't really a duet, it was more of a duel. A few people who were dancing, cheered, as the musicians continued to battle, before the drummer gave up, and the clarinet player smiled, and went on playing his prolonged solo, now.
Macy didn't know that this happened here on a Friday night, and it didn't seem that too many other students knew of it too, but she did see a certain maths teacher laughing at a joke that seemed to have come from a professor she recognized to teach Fire Control.
"Are we actually allowed to be here?" Macy asked, in a high-pitched whisper.
"Yeah! Most people don't know about it, it's kind of a secret party they have now and again. Come on, we'll find somewhere to sit." He said, reaching out for her hand, and pulled her over to a sofa that had a man sitting on it, with his head tossed back, his foot tapping to the rhythm.
"Why do you have a hat pulled down, over your hair, then?" She asked, pulling the hat over his eyes. He laughed, and pulled it back up, so Macy could see his dark-grey eyes.
"Because, I'm not really on good terms with the general public, now am I?" He said, raising his eyebrows.
"Yeah, that is true." She said, thinking for a second. It was strange, she felt very dreamy, almost tipsy from the atmosphere. People were dancing passionately near them. Macy felt awkward, and sat with her hands on her lap, fixing her skirt.
Steve had found her earlier, when Macy was in the Common Room, reading. He smiled, and dropped a note in her lap, while walking past, which told her to meet him at 8.00pm, by the Main Entrance. It also said for her to wear something nice. Then, under that, Steve had scrawled in, 'Not that you don't always wear something nice. Just something you can dance in.' The note made her smile, as she liked it when Steve tried to explain himself when he thought he had offended her. And, low and behold, at 8.00pm at the Main Entrance, Steve was there, waiting for her, wearing an army jacket that belonged to some family member, with a shirt and tie, jeans, and scruffy Converse. And the hat that Macy had just pulled down over his eyes.
Macy, uncertain of what exactly she should wear, as she didn't really know what they were doing, put on a cardigan over a t-shirt with Mickey Mouse on it, and a light pink pleated skirt and high-heels (with pumps in her bag, just in case!). She didn't want to do too much with her hair, but while walking down to Cardsdale, she quickly twisted it into a messy bun, and applied a bit more lip-gloss.
Steve went away for a few minutes, and came back, holding two glasses of a cloudy liquid, but after sipping it, she realised that it was Lemonade. She nervously drank it, as Steve danced while sitting down beside her.
"Are you having fun?" He asked, tilting his head to look at her.
"Yeah, but why am I here?" She asked Steve, looking around her.
"We're here so you can see more of the world. And I don't mean Japan, or Africa or whatever, I mean, the world that other people don't see, the underground, you know?"
Macy frowned slightly, and looked around her. She did like it here, but she still wasn't too sure of herself.
As the song finished, there was a few second gap, when the band got ready to play the next song. Steve stood up, and without giving Macy time to protest, he took her hand, and led her near the middle of the room. When the music started to play, Steve took Macy's cold hands and tried to use them to get the rest of her to move, but didn't really succeed.
"Stop it, Steve. let me sit down." she said, trying to pull away, but Steve just held onto her hands tighter, and sent a large shock though her fingers. She screamed not-too-loudly, and in return, she froze both of his arms. As he tried to pull away, part of his skin on his wrist ripped. He swore, rather loudly, under his breath, as Macy, now freaking out of what she had done, dragged him over to the side of the room, where she sat him now, and picked up his wrist to look at it.
"Oh goodness, I am so sorry! Are you alright? I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry, like, we can being you back to the school, someone will heal you, are you okay?" Macy's questions seemed to run out of her mouth. Steve put his other hand on her shoulder, trying to calm her down.
"Hey, it's okay, Mace, I'm fine. It's okay, it's only a cut, heck, it was my fault anyway." He said, trying to reassure her. He leaned over slightly, holding his cut arm, trying to hind the pain.
"Now, you're hurt, come on, we can find Rachel or someone, who'll fix you all up." She said, standing up, but he took her hand, making her sit back down.
"No, I'm fine, go and dance. Have fun! Go on, that's why I brought you. Look, that guy over there is giving you the eyes." He said, nodding towards a man who was sitting with a group of men. "Hey, mister! My sister would love to dance with you!" He shouted. The man, looking slightly confused, started to walk over to them.
"No! I don't want to! Why are you doing this?" She hissed under her breath. Steve smirked, and pushed her up.
"May I?" The man asked, taking her hand. Macy, having no say in the matter, went with him. He started to dance with her, awkwardly. She actually felt slightly more relaxed with the stranger than with the literal ball of energy. They began to make some small talk, she found that his name is Adam, he was in Cardsdale on business, and he lived by himself in an apartment with his cat. Macy said that her name was Tracy, she went to the local school with her brother, Chester, and she too had a cat. She did quite well, not freezing his hands, and she even felt slightly better, dancing with someone who was taller than her.
When the song had finished, he led her over to her 'brother', and said that it was nice meeting her, Tracy. He also offered to buy her a drink, but she declined. She sat back down with Steve, who's arm had stopped bleeding. They sat there, listening to the music, making up the history of Chester and Tracy.
Finally, they stood up to leave, and as they walked up to the school grounds, Steve leaned on her, with his arm around her shoulder. He stood up, slightly, to reach her height, and whispered something in her ear. She went white, and stopped walking. Steve smiled, but then realised something was wrong.
"I'm sorry, I'll see you later." She said, her eyes not being able to meet his. She transformed into a crow, and took to the skies, with his words, ringing in her ears.
"I love you, Macy."
