It was snowing again...
Jude paused, hands in pockets, and looked upwards towards the blindingly white sky. That was Levi-teeth white, that. A massive molar; stretched to the widest, most extravagant size possible, and scrubbed like crazy with a real good toothbrush. And whitened to boot. That was what they all did over in Hollywood. Whitened their teeth, talked diets, went on diets, dyed their hair, sucked fat out of their thighs and stomachs with hoovers and make things bigger when they weren't big enough, and smaller when they weren't small enough. They set the standards for the rest of the world- and their standards were completely unattainable. But that was Hollywood.
There's nooo business like shooow business...
The little ice stars showered down in delicate twirls, littering his hair and tickling his cheeks with their cool touch. Smiling crookedly, Jude shook his head, knowing full well it would soon gather another load. He ran his hand through his hair as he thought this, and it stuck up strangely. Hollywood would envy him, if they could seen him now, kit out in a pair of baggy pants and an old coat which hardly kept the cold out.
The country looked the picture of perfect English landscape- all snowy, rolling hills, and fluffy distant blobs in the distance which he suspected to be sheep. Either that... or live bits of cotton wool... clouds come to earth to invade... you know. All that sort of thing.
Jude was pleased to have been able to get out for this walk. Ailith hadn't been able to come, which was disappointing, but he didn't mind his own company. He had thought about asking someone else to come with him, but had found he didn't feel like it. It was nice to be out here, in the fresh, crisp white snow. He plodded along slowly, winding the familiar path towards the village.
Besides for the scary metal domes in the distant estates, Cardsdale looked perfectly picturesque. The exotic market which opened up there on Saturdays was apparently buzzing, and Jude reckoned he could probably find a couple of Orchid Hill students dawdling about the place. Lee would sure love it...
Lee...
Funny this, him not knowing who Jude was. Jude hadn't even gotten a chance to introduce himself to his new old friend, and wasn't awfully sure how to go about it. So for the most part, he had concentrated on not thinking about it until the time came.
Hence the walk.
Tameron called him a coward- he didn't care. There wasn't anything wrong with taking a walk when you didn't know what else to really do. Which was so not like him. He always tried to fix things. Except... he didn't know how to fix this thing.
Walk, Jude. Just walk.
A few pupils were coming up from the village now. Jude leaned back on one of the fences lining the fields, giving himself a rest. He watched them with interest as each chose its own individual little winding track up to the school. Someone was coming up his track too, carrying something. He narrowed his eyes, focusing in on the object.
A suitcase.
Why would someone need a suitcase- oh!
New students came to Orchid all the time. There wasn't really any set terms, or times people came. Maybe there was once, but there weren't now. Orchid was in the middle of a war, after all, so they were hardly picky about arrivals. To most magic families out there, it was either a haven from war, or as good as handing over your children to the enemy. People left Orchid just as abruptly as they came, and of course battles helped to wipe a few students off the role.
Jude straightened up, stretching, and walked along the path to meet up with the student. It was a girl, quite tall, around 5"8 or so, bent over and panting slightly by the time he reached her.
"Y'all need any help?" Jude approached her, nodding at her suitcase.
She didn't even glance up. "Yeah, yeah, could y'all...?"
Jude picked up the bag, feeling a thrill of unexpected surprise. "Texas! Y'all are from Texas!"
"That's me," she panted, apparently exhausted. Her hood was pulled up over her face, so he couldn't see her face properly, but her cheeks were pink and flushed. "And y'all are a Texas dude."
"Y'all bet I am," chuckled Jude.
She laughed, then reaching up, she flicked back her hood... and Jude was stunned.
The reason? She was gorgeous.
If Hollywood could see him now, they'd make a movie out of it. The peasant and the princess. The greatest chick flick of all time, and he'd be the star...
She looked over at him too, smiling, but then the smile froze on her face. Her eyes- already huge and a deep, chocolate brown- widened in surprise.
Cue the princess falling in love...
"Jaden?"
He froze, staring at her- into those big, brown eyes of her, and suddenly, any laughable Hollywood notions were wiped clean off the slate... He recognized her now... but... god! She'd grown up. Five years made all the difference in the world. How had she recognized him?
It felt so long since he'd been called that name...
"Jaden," she repeated, her eyes sparkling. "My god, it is you!"
His mouth could barely form the words. The bag hung loosely in his hand, forgotten.
"Jay," she grinned broadly, stepping back. "Just look at you, Jay. Jesus Christ you grew. I was taller than you once."
"It weren't that long ago," he finally croaked. "Not... really."
"Have I changed?" She tilted her head, the new, choppy locks of dark brown falling across it.
"Yeah. Gee."
She giggled. "You gonna' say my name then, Jay, or are you gonna' stand there gaping like a fish all day?"
Finally, a smile broke across his face, warm, surprised... and glad. "Dakota," he said, holding out his hand. "Long time, no see."
