Name: Loreliu Mallea. Once again, Mallea is not her actual surname, but her mother’s name – in her home country, she is referred to as ‘The Illusionist Loreliu’.
Age: 14 and a quarter physically. I’ll not get into the chronological thing, it’s very confusing.
Physical description: Not very tall, in comparison to her friends, but about average for all intents and purposes- she’s about 5’3”. She’s very thin – almost unhealthily thin – with very little in the way of curves and whatnot.
Her face is quite round, however, despite her physique. Her features are quite soft but somehow give the impression of being a little too big for her face. Her eyes are very, very large and her eyelashes like feather dusters – her eyes are her greatest beauty, if one can get past the fact that, like Toreth’s, they are completely black.
Her hair is short (to just below her ears) and black. She wouldn’t keep it short if she had a choice, but her hair is so unmanageable that it would be a bird’s nest if it were any longer.
Clothing description: Her favourite colours are yellow and gold, so she will wear these as often as possible. Her typical outfit – well, more than her typical outfit, she won’t dream of wearing something else – is a dress. It has wide skirts and sleeves that grow wider the further they get away from her shoulders, so the sleeves fall down if she raises her arms above her head. The neckline is square, and she wears a bodice that is the same colour as the rest of the dress, but darker. If she is wearing formal clothes, the dress will be the exact same shape, just more elaborate.
(Yeah, that is more complicated than it needs to be. Sorry ‘bout that.)
Personality: She is generally quite quiet, but that’s not to say she doesn’t have self-confidence. In fact, it’s quite the opposite – she keeps quiet in order to observe the situation at hand. Sarcastic comments are rather easier to make that way.
Of course, that’s not to say that she’s mean, either. She is a kind and nurturing person by nature, particularly with her friends – she’s very loyal to them.
She is not mild-mannered in any sense of the word, but you can only tell if she’s angry if you are very, very observant. She has enough sense to realise that if she challenges a person she’ll be more than likely to say something she regrets later, so generally she remains silent. She gives very good advice, but occasionally her views will be biased as her judgment is easily clouded if the issue involves someone she cares about.
And, to lift something from my notes on her – “She is somewhat passively extroverted – she doesn’t go out of her way to make friends with people[…] She would become very depressed, however, if she had no social contact whatsoever.” She grows to care about people very easily, provided they are kind to her.
History: She was born in Ancyna to a Caster (a person who can change the shape of objects with their mind) and an Illumanist (a person who can create light). She has no siblings, but she was very, very close to her parents. Her mother was a Transformed Iassean [read: A person who came from a place called Iassea], and so Loreliu spent many rainy days listening to tales of that world. She’s fascinated with her ‘Iassean heritage’, as she calls it. Because of it, though, a lot of the time she felt as if she didn’t fully belong to Ancyna – Iassea is a world without powers, a violent world, but one that is liberal and with people who are fiercely loyal to their friends and family. She has taken on many of these characteristics herself, although she is rather more subdued than she would have been should she have grown up in that world.
She lived happily in a closed life with her mother and father for her first ten years. She didn’t go to school and didn’t have many friends of her own age, but she didn’t feel any less happy for the lack of them. She had a tutor to teach her to control her power, but she was only ever taught a limited version of what she was actually capable of. Her parents taught her everything else she needed to know, and much more besides. She was probably one of the happiest children you ever could meet.
However, one day when she was eleven, she went out on a walk in one of the less favourable parts of the Hierarchal City, with her parents. Two armed assassins took them by surprise, and they were all defenceless. Her parents were expertly killed before they could say a word to her – a fact that has always hurt her, she didn’t even get to say goodbye – but as they turned to her others were heard coming, and the murderers panicked. They stabbed at her blindly and ran as fast as she can. She lost consciousness as someone picked her up, dangling limply in their arms.
Three weeks later, she woke up in the Healing Wards. She had been healed by a woman who died soon afterwards. There was anarchy in her city, but it was being quelled, and she was safe here. It was nearly a year before she was able to leave, though – the Healers that treated her said that she had no desire to get better, the body could heal but her mind was sick. She has never truly gotten over the guilt – she thinks she could have saved her parents lives. The only permanent physical effect it has had is many messy scars on her midriff, and the fact that she is now unable to conceive children. Where she comes from, this means that she is not allowed to marry.
After she left, she had nowhere to go, so she had to stay in the ‘orphanage’ in Ancyna. It wasn’t a proper name – most of the parents of the children who stayed there were still alive, just not permitted or able to look after them. While there, she was trained to take part in aero-acrobatic displays. She was one of the best Illusionists in her field, and so was paired up with one of the best Aeronauts – Toreth Delert. They became close friends quickly, bound together by the fact that Toreth was not married either (most of her age were, even though she was only twelve), and their general love of sarcasm.
They continued their performances until recently – Loreliu having rediscovered a lot of the joy she thought she’d lost in her life with Toreth’s friendship. She would prefer it to be a little… more than that, but she is not allowed to marry, and believes that he is far too good for her. She’s broken, you see, it would be most unfair to force herself onto him.
She is coming to Orchid for the same reason as Toreth is – Calia, their leader, believes that their powers are greater than what Ancynans would have them think, and Orchid is the best place to discover them. And on a more personal level – she wasn’t forced to go, as Toreth was, but she wanted to. She didn’t want to be without him.
(Sorry about the insane long-ness. I get carried away, you see.)
Gifts: As she is an Illusionist, she is able to create Illusions with her mind. There are no restrictions on this, except that the Illusion must be near her (within about forty feet), and that if it is too large she will be in serious danger of passing out.
In Ancyna, she has only been taught to create Illusions of sight. However, soon she shall learn to create Illusions of all the senses. They will be tangible, and capable of causing harm. There are only three differences between her Illusions and actual conjuring: they do not remain once she stops focusing on them, any physical effect that they have caused will be reversed once she stops (wounds will be healed, etc.), and she can also make things physically disappear while concentrating on them. However, the Illusions could be used to force someone into doing themselves harm – for example, if she uses an Illusions to attract someone to the bottom of a river, they’ll still be there and still (presumably) unable to breathe when she ends the Illusion.
OK, so that’s one power. Number two – she has the same ‘extreme’ eyesight as Toreth, so she’ll have to wear sunglasses too. It’s a weakness as much as a strength, really.
3 – She, due to her special standing with Calia, has been given what she knows as a ‘Crafted Linguist’s Stone’ – a stone that enables her to speak and understand any language. It hangs on a rough cord around her neck. She needs physical contact for it to work. This will be a sore spot with Toreth, however, as he wasn’t given one.
Pets: None. Another non-fan of animals.
