"Look at them," Ellie whispered softly to Brian, her usually sunny face stricken as she nodded across the Dining Hall. Kira's eyes darted up, and she followed Ellie's gaze.
"Daniel Ford's brother," nodded Brian, stirring his soup glumly. "Poor guy. They brought Daniel home in pieces."
Ellie blanched. "Pieces?"
"Alright, Bri, no need for gory details," Jack cut in quickly, frowning at his friend. "Really, it's not necessary."
Kira sighed, taking a spoonful of her own vegetable soup, but found she wasn't really hungry. "I killed someone out there on the field," she said suddenly. "I dunno- I think it was just the one, but there were so many people... and so much noise."
Jack gave a low growl.
Mike coughed nervously beside them. Kira jumped, looking up and beckoning him over. He looked a little relieved as he sank down beside them.
"I didn't wanna be cornered by Lydia," he mumbled sheepishly at their curious looks. "Kyle... he dumped her."
Jack swore. "Great. That's great. Perfect timing."
"Matt better not try anything," murmured Ellie, biting her lip. "He's so stupid though... ugh. He'll be a rebound at best."
"That's good enough for him," Brian muttered darkly. "It's a bad time for love all round. Chloe broke up with Lee."
Kira flinched, and they all jumped, turning to looking at her. "Sorry," she muttered. "Couldn't help it..."
Mike coughed in what she supposed was meant to be a sympathetic way, and reached awkwardly to pat her on the back. Kira shrugged it off. It wasn't like she was the one who needed sympathy anyway...
God. Stupid Madeleine and her stupid coma. She'd screwed up a hell of a lot. In her more heartless moments, Kira wished she had just died. Then she could've spared Lee the same fate. It reminded her of whenever Lee had first been dumped. Like he was digging himself a grave, and didn't seem to care. Jude had gone to see him yesterday, and reached the same conclusion.
Both of them were kind of terrified.
But it wasn't just Madeleine and Lee that worried Kira. Anton Gordon had been amongst those killed- and Will had spent her time holed up in their dorm crying for these past few days. Kira hated seeing her friend this way- and if she was honest, she was scared she was gonna go the same way.
She had to get to Cardsdale. She had to see Deron.
She had to make sure he was still alive.
The problem was, Cardsdale was still in disrepair over the battle. Many of its citizens had now fled across No Man's Land; hoping to escape to the world beyond. People didn't want anything more to to with this stupid war.
People just wanted it to end.
God, how easy it would be to end it! How easy it would be for Major just to stand up and say, "That's it, I give up. Orchid surrenders." And that would be the end of it! No more students would be killed. No more friendships would be lost- no more families torn to shreds- no more loves lost forever...
But she was wrong to think that. Because it wouldn't be the end. Far from it. Marius would take over, start the separate schools- but everyone knew he was only really interested in gifted humans. The other creatures would get snubbed. Discrimination; speciesism; racism etc would spread like wildfire. It wouldn't solve any problems. By keeping Orchid alive, and least everyone was united in one way-
A common goal.
Marius may be the main opposition to the school, but he was just one of many people willing to fight their way for the cause. There were about a billion other small extremist groups willing to throw away their lives for their cause.
It hurt her head to think about it. Kira shook herself, and tried to re-engage herself in her surroundings. Thankfully, her friends had moved on to a more cheerful topic.
"- are gonna kick your butts!" Jack told Brian delightedly, clenching his fists in excitement. "You little Spies won't be able to move quick enough. You lack the physical strength and stamina."
"And you're so big and brutish, there's no room for brains in that tiny skull of yours," retorted Ellie wickedly. "It'll be all too easy to distract you, and sail on past to score a goal."
"Per-lease," Jack grinned, flexing his muscles, which really were rather large. "You'll get smashed in the brawls."
"If there are any brawls," Mike reminded them.
"Scared to play ice hockey, little Carer?" Jack said mockingly, turning his biceps on Mike. "We'll thrash you in the tournament."
"You wish! Us Carers have a hell of a lot to prove!"
Kira rolled her eyes, automatically entering into the spirit of the conversation. "The Spies will win. Think about it logically. We're light, quick and fast."
"You haven't even signed up!" laughed Jack. "Some Head you are!"
Kira pulled a face. "That a challenge?"
"Darn right it is!"
"Fine!" she bit back. "We'll shake!"
She thrust forward her fist and she took it, accidentally crushing two of her fingers in his enthusiasm. She grinned up at him (all 6ft 3 of him), and the light in his eyes which shone in the spirit of the challenge and the game. Perhaps those... ahem, bulging muscles should've put her off- or perhaps that sheer rush of testosterone she knew would kickstart Jack into wild mode.
But after all, Jack wasn't the only one to enjoy a challenge...
