Lee pulled his jumper off, tying it around his waist and stretching at the table. Chloe was watching him over the rim of her glasses, which peered over the rim of a thick, leather-bound volume. Lee frowned at her.
"Yes?"
"Darn it!"
Lee jumped; along with his six other friends at the table. Matt turned to glare at them both. "Care to share?"
"She was staring at me," Lee said slowly.
Chloe giggled. "You and Kira were doing it to me the other day."
"Yeah, but that's Kira and Lee," Lydia pointed out, idly curling one of her long red locks around her little finger. Matt's eyes drew seemingly irresistably to the curling scarlet hair. "They both weirdos. Chloe, on the other hand, is normal."
"And so not meant to do that sort of thing?" Chloe frowned, closing her book. "I can be weird."
"It worked," Lee admitted. "I was freaked out."
"But you didn't run," she sighed, brushing her blonde fringe out of her eyes. "I ran."
"That scary?"
"Not you so much- but I've never known quite what to think of Kira."
Lee smiled. If it had been anyone else, he would've pulled them up on it. But he knew Chloe didn't mean it. She was Kira's friend after all, and his too. Whenever Chloe said these sorts of things, she never meant it. She was just joking, but she said it so seriously, a lot of people couldn't figure out where the line was drawn.
Kyle caught Lydia's hand, and the curl unravelled, falling back with a bounce to rest against her neck. Her fingers interlocked with his, and they smiled at each other, in a sickening fashion that'd become a daily routine with Kyle and Lydia. Matt's mouth curled into a scowl.
Chloe expected them to come out of the 'infatuated' stage in around a week, and Lee dearly hoped she was right. However, now that he was going out with Madeleine, he couldn't really imagine ever being out of it. It was so... nice.
Brian rolled his eyes and mimed barfing into his plate. Ellie elbowed him. "You'll put me off, you minger."
"Shan't," he pouted, sthingying some more ketchup onto his fries. "Anyway... how'd you lot find the exams today?"
"I've repressed English," replied Matt glumly, twisting a noodle sullenly around his fork. Lydia patted his arm sympathetically.
Chloe sighed. "Don't be silly. You've done it. You've aced it."
"You're not helping him," Lee murmured, nodding at Lydia.
Chloe pressed her lips together, keepng the smile deliberately off her face in imitation of forced graveness. "I think I've done ok in shape-shifting. Your girlfriend was just before me," she added to Lee.
"Ooh, Madeleine," Brian said happily, turning his attention to Lee with a deliberate flick of his hand. "Darling, you must tell me all about her."
"See, this is why people think you're gay," Ellie grinned cheekily at him.
"They don't think, they know," Chloe said gravely, tucking a strand of her blonde hair behind her ear. "I'm sorry, Brian," she turned to him, her bottom lip quivering as though she was about to cry, "I just had to tell someone and... and... well you know what Lydia is like..."
"Thanks," Lydia said, rolling her eyes. Kyle, who rather fancied himself what Ellie referred to as 'the strong, silent type' leant forward and whispered something in her ear, resulting in an excited giggle and hushed whispers.
"We shall be going now," Kyle said, pulling Lydia to her feet. "We'd better get in some revision for tomorrow..."
"Suuure," Ellie muttered as they both walked away. "And I'm a Chav."
"You do wear a lot of... ah... bling," Chloe replied, recieving a kick for her trouble.
Lee gazed fondly at them all. Ellie and Brian had been his firm friends since the very first day, and he never grew tired of their constant banter. Lydia was one of Ellie's friends, and so his friend. Of course, he knew all the gossip behind her and Matt. Matt was a rather late addition to his friends list, having only arrived this year. And he'd known Chloe for a few years, but not awfully well. It was only recently he'd begun to get to know her a bit better...
There was always something he'd liked about her, with her quiet seriousness and those strange little smiles she handed out rarely, but when she did... It was weird. She had that knack of just keeping you happy- and calm, but in a moment she could turn it around. You never knew whether she was joking or not, but it wasn't in a mean, mocking way he knew some people were like.
Chloe was a nice person. He liked her.
"Ooh, you look distant," she said, turning to him. "Talk, Lee! We miss you."
He laughed. "Naah... you don't."
"He's thinking of Madeleine," Ellie said smugly. "You're getting as bad as Lydia and Kyle."
"I will never be that bad, I swear," Lee said solemnly, crossing his heart.
"Pssh, he says that now," Brian muttered darkly. "But sooner or later..."
"What about Kira?" Chloe asked suddenly. "What does she think of it?"
"She's happy enough. Why wouldn't she be?"
"You're like her brother- duh!" Ellie laughed.
Brian eyed her curiously. "Duh?"
"It was a 'duh' moment."
Lee laughed. "Naah. She's fine with it."
"But where is dear Kira?" Brian said suddenly, with a great display of scanning the hall for her. "I haven't seen her in a while. Where is she?"
"Down in Cardsdale," replied Lee, a sudden frown creasing his forehead. "Meeting a friend."
This news was greeted with a brief, sudden silence. Lee chewed the inside of his lip. Aah. Right. Well, he supposed the reaction wasn't unexpected.
"I saw her with a boy down in Cardsdale the other day," Chloe said suddenly, a look of realisation dawning on her face. "They were going over books together- he was pretty cute."
"Cute?" Lee repeated quickly. Too quickly.
"Awww!" squealed Ellie, clapping her hands. "That's so sweet. Brotherly instinct."
"Cousinly affection," Brian reminded her.
"Does it matter?"
"Make sure she uses protection," Brian said kindly to Lee, who pulled a face.
"Thanks, guys."
"We love you, Lee!" Ellie cried, beaming at him as she pulled her bag towards her.
"Indeed," Brian said, following her lead. "For where would be without a Lee?"
"And all your quaint little ways."
"Quaint. Hah! Looks like I'm not the only gay one."
"Bri- "
"I'm not gay!"
"You really like her, don't you?" Chloe asked him quietly, as the other two got up, bickering quite happily.
Lee was still watching the other two, laughing. "What? Kira?"
"No," Chloe said softly. "Madeleine."
Lee froze, her name shocking him into silence. He looked at Chloe for a few moments, noticing for the first time her eyes were sort of... pale green. Olive. That was a nice word. He really needed to expand his vocabulary.
"Yeah," he replied, finally. "Yeah, I do."
"Yes?"
"Darn it!"
