The bell had sounded, Kira had given her word, and the Spies were all beginning to pack up. In Lisle and Seamus' groups the Spies had been okay, but for Kira's little cluster, it'd been a tough training session. Kira knew that, and she also knew that most of them were exhausted, and probably resented her for it. Still, she knew they'd appreciate it in the long run. She refused to fail her Spies.
They had to be ready.
Lee had been working in Seamus' group today. She hated to admit it, but her cousin wasn't exactly... brilliant at what he did. She'd seen him in the simulation video, and when caught out and asked for his identity, he'd gone white and resorted to firing his gun at his captors and making a break for it. He'd been fine up until there, but he was obviously a really bad liar.
And... he was also kind of wimpy. That guy who decked him hadn't looked that tough. Kira could've taken him out if she needed to. Lee didn't think to use his powers.
He panicked. It was a problem many of her Spies shared.
Sometimes, she caught herself half-wondering at why he wasn't an Academic. It would suit him a lot better, and he was certainly smart enough.
Lisle had spent most of his time going over basic procedures with his group. He was making his Spies learn them, and learn them well for next session, when they'd be put to the test. Seamus had adopted another approach. He lined everyone up and given them no warning whatsoever before he was yelling random questions at them, which they had less than two seconds to answer. He'd done this to highlight the fact that they always had to be prepared.
Kira had stood up before her little group in their third of the hall (thank goodness it was that place was so big) and had asked them some quick questions about weaponry. Only two people got their questions right- Jude Dorrian and Ailith Rayner- both of whom (funnily enough) were amongst the top performers in the simulation.
Finally, getting them all up, she pulled out the mats, climbing wall and benches and ropes, and pretty soon she had them all running and jumping and climbing through obstacle after obstacle. Kira herself went through the course to show them what to do and (having practiced it a good ten times earlier) she completed it with apparent ease.
Now, her Spies were exhausted, and Kira did feel a little bad for putting them all through such a taxing time. Suddenly, she felt a tap on her shoulder.
"Hi, Lee."
"Hey," she grinned, turning to face him. "How'd you find it?"
"Just call me Larry Scott."
"Like Barry- ?"
"That's the one."
She laughed. "Anything you want?"
"Feel like coming down Cardsdale with me?"
Kira shook her head, a small girl catching her eye from across the hall as she bent over her bag. "No, I've got some... em... urgent Spy business to attend to."
"Bore!" he called after her as she began making her way through the crowd.
Finally reaching Ailith, she bent down beside her, keeping her voice low.
"Hey, I know this is sudden- but feel like a mission?"
