Kira hovered backstage nervously, twisting her sleeves around her hands. They'd been well wrung by now- as if they'd been squeezed through a mangle or two. Realising just how bad they looked, she groaned and pulled off her hoodie, turning to examine herself in the mirror Lee had conjured for her to keep backstage.
All in all, she didn't look too bad. Her hair was tied back, and she wore light, black gear- a pair of combats and a sleeveless top. She hadn't gone for anything too OTT, otherwise it might look like she was trying too hard- although she hadn't quite been able to resist the temptation of fingerless gloves. She pulled a face in the mirror, folding her arms and trying to look tough- or even foreboding. It didn't really work very well. She was far too slight to impose any real threat. Sighing, she decided she'd just have to act authoritive, and perhaps give them a taster of her temper, and she'd bring them under her control.
Today was her first ever meeting/training session with her Spies. They'd had an easy slide into term, but now she was planning on keeping up a regular practice- hopefully twice a week. Of course, if they wanted her Spies could contact her for one-on-one training sessions, so that she could help them improve on their technique.
She had so many things to go through with them- half of which she was terrified she might screw up herself. She needed to make sure her Spies were fit, fast and ready to fight if neccessary. She wanted to wipe out any kind of clumsy work- her Spies had to be agile, athletic; swift and silent. Not only that, but she was going to have to start working with them on their acting skills of all things! She wanted them to be able to create realistic and completely believable alter-egos- if neccessary, they were to be able to come up with characters in a split second. Kira had to turn them all into masters of disguise- to train them in about a million different weapons- and to make sure they reported their findings as accurately as possible.
This was gonna be fun.
"Kira?" Ellie's slightly flushed face appeared from behind the curtain. "You ready to go?"
"Ready as I'll ever be," smiled Kira adjusting her gloves. Too over-excessive? Urgh. Too late now...
Ellie nodded and hurried out onto the stage. The gentle murmuring Kira had been able to hear just beyond the curtain died out instantaneously. Kira listened closely as Ellie cleared her throat and began to speak.
"Welcome, Spies," came her loud, clear confident voice, "to our first meeting of the term!"
Her cry was met by a tumultous round of cheering and applause. Kira bit her lip, grinning. So they were excited. That always helped.
"Now, let me introduce you to Kira Norris- Head of the Spies, and leader of our group!" she said loudly. "She's the reason your backs are gonna break this year but hell! When we get out there and do our thing- you'll be thanking her!"
Do our 'thing'? Kira chose to ignore it, and walked out with as much confidence as she could muster. There was no podium on the stage, just Kira, and behind her a beaming Ellie, Lisle and Seamus. She returned their smiles, then, steadying herself turned to face her Spies.
"Hi."
The crowd erupted into cheers before her, a sea of eager, flushed excited faces screaming in delight. Kira felt a wave of confidence wash over her. Everyone here was really here because this meant something to them- everyone here really cared about their group. After a few more minutes of applause, Kira held up her hands to signify for them to stop, and the crowd hushed immediately.
"Okay, guys," she smiled. "You already know me- Kira Norris, and I'm sure you've heard of Lisle and Seamus, their reputation proceeds them."
There was another round of acknowledgement as her two Spies bowed to the crowd, beaming even wider. Kira had to signal for them to be silent now, and beckoned to Ellie.
"This is my friend Ellie. Some of you may know her from around the school, but to others she'll be a complete stranger. My friend has been out on the field before, and has had quite a lot of experience in field work. Today, I'm going to put you all through your paces. You see, Ellie has a very... unusual power. Would you like to explain it to them?"
Ellie nodded, coming up to stand beside Kira. "It's very simple, guys. Basically, using my imagination I can create a simulated environment where you will be able to spy, and fight and get information. Your physical body won't actually move, but within the world I create for you, you will have the limitations of your physical self, and your powers. The good thing about this is I can combine it with my other power- telepathy- and I can transfer a detailed account of all of your into someone else's mind, who in turn, if they're a conjurer, can turn that into a tape for Kira to re-watch and re-watch."
Silence greeted this.
"Very simple," Kira said weakly, which caused a smattering of laughter.
Ellie blushed. "Sorry."
"Okay, guys," Kira said, turning back to look at her Spies. Basically, all you need to know is that Ellie is going to create the same simulated environment and mission for you all. You are going to have to make it to the top floor of a skyscraper, getting past security, and once you've made it you have to seek out Room 503. In that room, there is the evil Redberry Cook- who plans to take down a food market- possibly pancakes, don't laugh, guys, this is a serious excercise!- using a secret recipe. Your job is to find out exactly how Redberry is going to take down this food market, and escape the building with the appropriate material."
This was again greeted with silence.
"Just do your job," smiled Kira, and gave Ellie the cue.
Immediately, Ellie stepped forward and held out her hands, breathing deeply. Kira knew this took a lot of energy out of her friend, and so took a step backwards. The crowd eyed her warily, waiting for something to happen.
3... 2... 1...
Ellie's eyes flared red and opened, a crimsom beam shooting forth from her eyes. Moving across the rows slowly, she looked at person after person and let her beam cross over them. The second the ray of light hit then, their heads lolled forward and their eyes shut, locked in a trance.
Kira's eyes roved the rows of her sleeping Spies too, jumping down from the stage and beckoning for Lisle and Seamus to follow her. She hoped to discuss plans for upcoming weeks. But for now, she would let her Spies be.
It was time they were pushed the limit...
