Macy sat at the side of the stage, fidgeting. She was at the end of the row, beside Kira. She looked out, over the whole hall which was full of the students of Orchid Hill, waiting for the principle to make his announcement about why they were all here. Prof Hoodham continued. "Students, we all know that last year we lost the heads of the groups, when they had to leave and set of on new life paths. We have now chosen our new heads of the groups, after long searching and we hope that they will lead their groups through highs and lows and will succeed in all they do with integrity, determination and strength. This year, strangely all the leaders and female, but that will not in any chance waver their power and strength. Now, I would like to welcome our vive-principle Prof. Thandie to present our new leaders." Prof. Thandie stood up and walked across the stage, smiling. In her hand where certificates and necklaces. She went up to the microphone. "Hello Students. I am going to present our new leaders with their certificates and necklaces that will protect them. Now I would like to call up the heads of the Academics, Carers, Spies and Warriors: Macy Deltine, Will Wright, Kira Norris and Madeleine Baudelaire." The hall erupted in clapping, as the four of them stood up and went on stage to receive their certificates and necklaces.

Madeleine stood up, behind Kira, and followed everyone up to the stage, smiling confidently. Professor Thandie shook each of their hands in turn, saying something and handing them a certificate and a necklace. Madeleine's necklace was a pointed deep blue crystal - she recognised it as a sapphire, her Nana Maggie had been fanatical about the supposed healing powers of crystals - on a silver chain, an tiny ornamental silver device attaching the sapphire to the chain. As she looked at the sapphire, she felt a tiny jolt in her stomach. Professor Thandie shook her hand. "This crystal will protect you in times of need. Look after it well, and do not let it get into enemy hands. I trust you know how important this is." Madeleine smiled at her vice-principal. "I'll keep it close at all times, I promise." Professor Thandie smiled at her, and Madeleine, who was starting to feel nervous, returned to her seat. It felt real now. Her words of looking forward to the future before now seemed unreal to her - this was the future. She had a huge responsibility. She was not only protecting people in the school, she was helping the army to win, she was now apparently a valuable tool in the battle of good and evil. And if she failed... She shivered slightly. No pressure, huh?

The plan had been to go and buy a dress. Saturdays were great shopping days, after all, and the shops always re-stocked on them in Cardsdale. She'd just been walking into the Heel-Toe Dress Makers when a terrible voice she recognised immediately as Professor Thandie's echoed horribly around her head. "Do you think that as Head of the Spies you can get away with not turning up for an Assembly?! You'd better get here- RIGHT NOW- or you will be in deep trouble!" So Kira had legged it. The funny thing was, whenever she had turned to run, she'd felt a strange sensation spread through her as she'd put her foot forward. And (although she was sure was imagining it) she seemed to reach the Assembly Hall within five minutes. But how was that possible? Still, it didn't matter now. Kira had made it in time, and she had just shaken Professor Thandie's hand and been presented with a little silver chain, ending in a diamond-dotted bat. As Professor Thandie had pressed it upon her, she'd had a knowing look in her eye. "New powers coming, eh?" she said softly. Kira didn't answer, but she couldn't help but smile. Then she sat down again, and was shortly joined by Madeleine. She didn't look at the girl who was now dating her cousin, but instead, forced herself to stare forward into the sea of faces before her. She could feel a thousand eyes sweeping over her, and felt sick. She wasn't proud of her position with the Spies. She really, really wasn't. She knew why she was one now, thanks to Matt, but it actually had left her with a resentment for her position of power; and she'd no doubt this resentment was rubbing off on her, and that's why she was so annoyed with Lee and Madeleine. It was okay though. She'd get over it soon enough. Right?

Will walked up to the Vice Principal Thandie. She shook her hand and handed her a necklace which had five star pentagram and two moons at the bottom with a emerald stone in between them. It also had a fox, a horse head, elephant,a pig and a person in each space of the star. "Thank you," Will exclaimed. "You're very welcome, Will," Prof. Thandie replied. She sat back down in between Macy and Madeleine on her seat which was on the stage. She gazed out over the sea of heads. She knew that she had become of some importance but she didn't know if she liked it or not. She never really liked a lot of attention but she loved to help and explore and that's what she was gonna do; learn, help and explore her new power and her new role as the Head of the Carers.
