Macy leaned on her elbow, tapping her pen on the desk. She was sitting in a small table by the window of the cafe, writing in a journal. She hadn't had time by herself recently, she was always having to do something, whether it was writing essays, or helping the librarian with a backlog of books, or tutoring people, or even trying to sort out in her head what on earth was happening with Steve.
she glanced down at her page, took a sip of her coffee, and then started to write again.
Classes are getting tougher, I mean, not so tough that I can't cope, just...tougher. I can still do all the work and all, but I can't really cope with pressure as well as I could.
She sighed and looked out the window. The sun was shining though the clouds, and there weren't too many people around the Square. She saw a few people coming out of the Dress-Makers, and an old man was feeding the birds near the fountain, but that was about it.
She looked down and started to write again. She began to get lost in her words, and didn't realise who had entered the coffee shop.
"Macy Deltine?" She heard an Irish accent ask her. She looked up, and started to shake, at who was there.
"Anke. Uh..how are you?" She choked out, at the girl who had a not-so-private crush on Steve. She sat down on the seat across from Macy, and they could both feel their awkwardness.
"I'm okay. How're you? I haven't talked to you, in, like, ages." She said, leaning forward slightly. Macy closed her journal out of fear that Anke was trying to read it.
"I'm fine. How's training?" She asked, wanting to get out of there.
"It's okay. I'm training with Timothy Stokes now." She said, shaking her head, so her fringe fell over her eyes.
"Really? Not with Steve anymore?" She asked. She knew that one of them were bound to mention him. Anke looked up, and smiled slightly.
"Ah, no, we stopped after Christmas. I had to go with somebody else, who was a bit more challenging." she said, with a laugh.
Macy rolled her eyes, and then looked around the store. A few people were walking around the shelves of books, and a couple of people were waiting at the counter to pay the check, while a skinny blond waitress who was looking very tired poured some coffee in a mug of a man who was sitting across from her.
"You know what he did to me.." Anke asked her, leaning closer across the table.
"What? Who? Um, no.." She said, suspiciously.
"Macy...Ritzski kissed me." She said, leaning back on her chair, waiting for Macy to respond.
"Wha...what? Um, no..no, he couldn't." she said, feeling her voice go slightly high-pitched. She couldn't believe Anke. How could she say something like this? Steve couldn't have done that...no, he wouldn't do that. Anke was lying.
"You're lying." Macy said, feeling her hand curl into a fist, creating a ball of ice in it.
"Why would I lie? Macy...I wouldn't lie. It was the day before the Christmas dance, and we were in training, and he asked me to go to it, and I said that he was going with you, and then he leaned over and kissed me, but I pushed him away, and-"
"Please, please, stop talking. Just- just don't say anything."
It didn't make sense. It really, really didn't. But when she thought about it, it sort of did. He ran away later that week when she was away, they had stopped training together, stopped talking together. But, Anke did have a crush on him, she could just be making it up. But, then again, who would make up something like this?
"I'm sorry, Macy. I wanted to tell you sooner, you needed to know. But, I didn't think that you two would get any closer, but now that you're a couple, I thought that you had to know."
"Wait? Who's saying that we're a couple? We are not a couple. And...I really can't believe this. I just..I just can't believe it." She said, not having a clue what to think. She was still shaking, and she felt a prick of frozen tears behind her eyes. She wanted to throw up, she wanted to scream, she wanted to curl up into a ball and cry her eyes out. She felt so..betrayed. Did Steve really like her?
She felt so confused.
"I have to go. I...I have to go." She said, standing up, grabbing her things, and running out of the coffee shop. She kept walking, though the town, and up the road to the school, but stopped when she was half-way up there. She went to the side of the road, under an oak tree, and fell on the ground. She didn't cry, but created a large patch of ice around her. She started to feel it crawl up her legs, but stood up, and managed to change into a raven. She took to the skies, trying to find Gypsy, and make sense of what she had been told.
