Madeleine tore her eyes away from him as her dad cleared his throat. "Well, now that we've got that sorted," he said brightly, and Madeleine had to laugh. "I guess we'd better be going." Her mum nodded, rising and shaking Lee's hand. "It was lovely to meet you." Madeleine's dad pulled her into a hug. "You'll come up again tomorrow?" she asked. "Definitely," he answered, ruffling her hair. "Kay... approved?" she added, in a mutter. Wow, she sounded nervous. He chuckled at her tone. "Approved." She pulled back, grinning. "Bye mum," she smiled, hugging her in turn. This time she didn't need to ask. She could tell from her mum's smile that she more than approved. When they'd gone, she turned to Lee, smiling. "You were awesome! They love you."

Lee watched her parents' retreating backs disappear from sight before turning to answer Madeleine. "Really?" he asked her. "D'you really think so?" He guessed the whole thing could've gone a heck of a lot worse, but that didn't take away from the fact that it could've gone far smoother. For one thing, he could've not made that stupid comment in reference to the mess of the past weeks. For another, Mr Baudelaire could've asked him to call him, 'Dad'. Lee wouldn't really like that, though, but it was a nice gesture.

"I know so," Madeleine said, before pretending to muse. "For example - the last time my dad spoke to a guy he thought I was involved with, the guy fled the scene. Fell into a river while he was at it, actually... He hasn't spoken to me since. The fact that you're still standing here pretty much shows that he thinks you're great. And my mum's really easy to read, and she couldn't stop smiling." She paused, and grinned at Lee. "Yeah, you're fine. Though you could have done without the comment about a few weeks ago."

Lee tapped his head weakly. "Exactly my thoughts. Like minds, see?" It was idiotic, really, to not have thought about Madeleine and 'other guys' before she came to Orchid, but now that she had mentioned it, Lee suddenly found himself uncontrollably curious. He'd take curiosity over jealousy any day. "And were you involved with the guy?" he asked lightly, hooking his thumb in his jean pocket.

Madeleine blushed again. Today was not the day to stay pale. "Not as such," she admitted, feeling embarrassed. "It was... well, we weren't really going out. It was a very, very, very brief thing... Okay, that's not coming out right." Too right. She was starting to sound like what Levi had called her. "We kissed once. Because I move so much, relationships didn't really last long. And especially not once my dad and Shaun got in."

He hadn't missed the plural. "Relationships?" he mused, grinning at her. "How many guys did you kiss before me, anyway?"

Oh, dear. "Bloody good question," Madeleine muttered under her breath, before attempting to answer. "A couple..." ... of dozen... Okay, okay, well, maybe it wasn't really that many. But the truth was that Madeleine wasn't exactly sure. Call her a tart, or some other stuff, but teenagers get bored during camp... and there were lots of bottles... Besides, Lee really, really didn't need to know. She was sure that her voice wasn't that convincing, though. "How many girls did you kiss before me?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.

Well, that one was bound to have back-fired on him. "A few," he admitted sheepishly. "Just a few girls from back home."

Madeleine grimaced. Of course Lee would have had other girlfriends, but the image of a pale, green-eyed, scarlet-haired Irish beauty coming up in her head wasn't the nicest of one... Hang on... that was Lydia's hair... Okay, really total overreaction! Laughing at herself, she asked, "When you say 'home', do you mean Ireland, or Iceland? Hey, you never told me about that!"

Lee laughed. "Iceland was where I was originally from. And when I say 'originally', I mean Kira and I never actually lived there, but it's where our families are from. Technically, we're Irish, because we were born in Ireland and all that, and we've never been back to Iceland- but we are also Icelandic." He'd never really though about himself as Icelandic though. It felt weird- like taking on a new name or identity. It didn't feel right. So he was Irish. Irish Lee. Hee hee hee. He winced, making a mental note to stop rhyming inside his own head.

"Oh... okay," Madeleine said, taking a sip from her now almost-cold coffee, suddenly thinking of her Romani roots. "I guess that makes me... what, Albanian? Or if you go further back... Indian? Indian.That's... weird..." She shook her head, suddenly realising that she'd given away much more than she expected. "Anyway... so did my dad scare you?" she asked.

"A little," Lee admitted. "Mine's nice, you see. And not nearly as muscly." His dad was heading towards a pot belly, poor chap. His dad didn't really seem to be aware of this fact, but Bethany and his mother both were, and neither were happy about it. The problem was, Lee's dad just didn't excercise. Really, he wasn't in bad shape at all, but the fact was, he didn't even walk places. He just drove, and ate fast food when he could. Lee knew Bethany would never, ever let Jason away with it. Or him, for that matter.

Madeleine chuckled. "He is nice... usually. He just doesn't like guys... er... I think pawing was his term of choice," she said, laughing. "He's just so protective... it used to be Shaun - and if you think that my dad's muscly, you should have seen him. Dad was pretty lenient and usually just laughed at me until Shaun died. Can you see a little why he's like what he is?" The muscle thing was a good point, though. Madeleine was certain that she'd seen her dad's biceps flexing slightly under his jacket.

Lee nodded slowly. "He wants to protect you. Even I'm a threat- though I hardly look it. Even I've managed to hurt you before." The term 'pawing' she'd used made his stomach twist uncomfortably. He didn't like that word. It was horrible. And it gave him a terrible image of some greasy, sleezy git, with his hands all over Madeleine. Lee scowled. He'd punched Levi out for her. He could do worse if pushed. He could pull knives out of mid-air, after all.

"It wasn't your fault," she answered, an insistant note in her voice. And it wasn't. If she had the sense not to act on impulse and ask questions first, the whole sorry mess would have been avoided. Her mum had always said that she, her brother and the entire side of her dad's family acted too quickly - they were known to "jump the gun".
