"Show me a magic trick."
It was a late, sunny, Sunday afternoon, and Kira was yet again down in Cardsdale with Deron. Today, they were hanging out near the old pub, and they'd just seen a drunken magician get kicked out.
Deron had seemed pleased to see her too; his mother had left him on baby-sitting duty for his two younger cousins- Zara and Armelle, or the 'two wittle princesses' as he so scathingly referred to them. Kira gave him a good excuse to leave, and he was quite certain his mother wouldn't complain too much about the fact that Kerry had to take over. Recently, she'd been out late one night with a boy who according to the village as a whole was 'bad news'.
This way, Kerry would be forced to toe the line.
"A magic trick?" he repeated, raising an eyebrow. "Why that of all the amazing things I could show you?"
Kira pressed her lips together, forcing herself not to laugh. "That's disgusting, Deron."
"No, you're disgusting!" he cried, mock-outraged. "You're the one who interpreted like that! Who knows what I could've said next?"
She chose to ignore him. "Come on, show me a magic trick. I've never seen anyone pull something out of a hat before."
He laughed. "Oh right. One of us non-magic folks' quaint little tricks? Dunno about hats, but I can pull a coin out of your ear."
She frowned at him. "Really?"
"No," he laughed. "It's a trick. The name tells you everything you need to know."
"Sorry, that's what I meant," she laughed. "Right so... em... here..." Kira pulled her blue, beaded bag off her shoulder, and began to rummage through it. Eventually, her hand closed around her small, black clutch purse and she pulled a shining silver coin out of it, handing it to him with a flourish.
"Perfect," he said, taking it from her and examining it closely, before balling his hand into a fist. "Now... think of a magic word."
She thingyed her head, raising an eyebrow. "A magic word?"
"Oh, yes," Deron smiled. "How else could the magic work?"
Kira giggled. "Are you making fun of me?" She never could quite tell with Deron.
"Only a little," he winked. "Now... go on... sausages!"
"What?!"
"It's the magic word," he laughed. "Sausages! Or what about that old classic- abricadabra?"
"Abri... dabra?"
"Abricadabra!"
"Is that it?"
"Yep."
"No... movements? Breathing excercises? Summoning of energy?"
Deron shook his head, laughing. "Nah... that's real magic. This is just a trick, remember?"
"You could make it a bit more convincing is all..." she muttered stubbornly.
"Say a magic word!" he urged her, grinning.
"Bibbiti-bobbiti-boo!" Kira quoted from a favourite fairy-tale of hers, resisting the temptation to smile.
He nodded, and held out his fist. "Open it."
She smiled questioningly at him, thingying her head like Frederick whenever she sang to him.
Deron punched her shoulder lightly. "C'mon! Open it!"
She sighed, as though this all was beneath her, and wrapped her fingers around his, pulling them backwards... no. That wasn't... how...?
"It's gone!" she cried, momentarily stunned. She honestly hadn't expected that to work.
"Nah, it's not," he grinned, then suddenly stopped, and frowned. "But... no... Right there! I can see it shining back at me, bright as day!"
"Ok, ok, you're joking now," she said, slightly less confident than before.
"Never," he winked, and leant forward, putting his hand against her ear.
Quite suddenly, she felt the feeling of metal pressing down- just on the inside of her ear. Deron wrinkled his nose, and suddenly gave it a good tug and voila! He pulled back the same shiny coin and handed it back to her, laughing madly at her slack expression.
"How did you actually do that?!" she cried, spinning the coin in her hands. "It wasn't the word- like you said it's a trick. You hid it. It's got to be that. How'd you hide it?!"
Deron pressed his lips together in what looked like a great effort to stop laughing. "A good magician never reveals his secrets."
"Ooh, secrets and surprises..." she sighed theatrically. "What amazing powers you must posess!"
"Only the best, baby," he winked.
She frowned at him. "Baby?"
He shrugged. "Seemed appropriate."
Kira raised an eyebrow, then laughed. "Fair enough..."
"And what about your oh so magical powers?"
"Better than yours."
"I bet!" he laughed. "Since yours just happen to be real."
She smiled. "Ok... em... hypnoses?"
Deron shook his head. "Wouldn't trust you with that."
"Water control?"
"And have you drown me?! Eh... no."
"Super-speed?"
"I won't have you showing off about how you can run faster than me!"
"Aww, worried about your poor little ego?"
It was Deron's turn to roll his eyes. "My ego's easily hurt. Evil girls don't help it."
"Fine," she smiled. "Shadows."
"Shadows?"
"Yep, we're gonna go for..." her voice trailed off, Kira's face suddenly blanching. She could see them now, coming towards her from across the street, snaking in and out of every crook and cranny...
"Kira?" Deron's tone had changed. A concerned beat had come into it; one she hadn't heard before.
Ignoring him, Kira knelt to the ground so that her own shadow reached towards them. Relieved, the shadows sank into it, giving a little sigh of thanks.
"Good, kind Kira. Thank you for your help. We are much obliged to you."
"That's ok," she said softly, trying to hide the horrible nerves that'd suddenly gripped her frame. "Did you... I mean... did you find him?"
"We found him. We found them all. They stay near, and are careful, but we are better. He stays now, at the hotel, under the name of Michael J. Florence. He stays in Room 27, Floor 2."
"And you're certain it's him?" she asked quickly, no longer bothering to hide the urgency in her voice.
"We saw him speak with a woman- he called her Polly. We heard him boast to her. We heard him speak his terrible harsh words. His shadow sensed us, but it could not warn its master. It does not have that power."
"Oh, thank you," whispered Kira, pressing her hand against the shadow as a way of showing her gratitude. "Thank you so, so much!"
The shadow bobbed, as though they were nodding their heads, and slid away again, into the shadows of the alley. Straightening up, Kira turned to Deron, who was gaping at her.
"Was... was that a trick?" he asked hoarsely.
Kira pressed her lips together, and shook her head.
"Something important... school-related?"
She smiled. "You're a smart guy, Deron."
"Not smart, observant," he laughed. "Okay... I'll see you around, Kira?"
"Thanks," she beamed at him. For a brief, awkward moment, they hovered, and smiled at each other. Then Kira caught herself, and with a little shake, spun on her foot and sped back up towards the school.
