"Because I knew you'd react like this." "Too true."

If what he had said before irritated her... this just enraged her. "React like what, exactly?"

"Like this," he persisted. "Getting suspicious. Asking questions. What, did you think that this was another Chloe thing?" He stopped dead, pulled up short. He didn't mean that. "Yes we did."

Madeleine pulled away from his side, outraged. "I'm sorry?! Another Chloe thing? Lee, she was all over you - of course I was going to be suspicious!"

Madeleine immediately backed down, speaking calmly and deciding to go for the truth. "No, I do trust you, Lee, honestly. But I just... I worry. That stunned Lee into silence. And usually, that would've killed off his anger. Any ill feeling would be gone- and he would take Madeleine in his arms and just... just kiss her. But Libba was stubborn. Libba was persistant. And once Libba had hold of something, she never, ever let go. He could feel her inside him now, wrestling against his ebbing anger and refiring it; strapping it down and bending it to her cruel will... His head was aching. "You're an idiot," he told her fiercely. "You're really a bloody idiot."

Lee turned away from her, looking up towards the sky and its darkening clouds. "We should go in," he said coldly.

Madeleine stood up, lifting her bag. "Yes, we should," she said, in a cutting tone that was enough to give an Eskimo frostbite, before turning on her heel and heading back up to the school.
