They seemed like possibly the most mismatched couple ever - and hadn't Will only arrived this year?

Words couldn't describe the rush of hatred that Madeleine felt for Will right at that point. She'd spoken to Will about Lee - Will had saw what she was like after she had dumped Lee - Will was her friend.
"So ..." Madeleine said, phrasing her words carefully and trying - and failing - to hide the angered, hurt edge in her voice. "If you weren't dating... what did happen?"

Lee silently cursed himself and his stupidity... and suddenly, he was mad at himself for it. The faint tremor of laughter echoed throughout his head, but he ignored it.
"She kissed me," he said, taking his arm away immediately. "We were out together, and she kissed me. That's it."

Madeleine winced as his arm slid away from her shoulders, trying to conceal any hurt that she felt at this fact.
Hurt at his tone.
But it didn't stop the question that came out of her mouth.
