The cool air on Madeleine's face wasn't cooling her nerves; the wide open lawns weren't soothing the stifling sense of claustrophobia. For once, the high ceilings and airy rooms of the school she loved felt like concrete prison cells, the walls contracting and squeezing in on her...
She took a deep breath of the wintry, cold air, eyes closed, trying to calm her nerves.
Usually, the gypsy side of her didn't come out too much - she could control the wanderlust. But when she was supposed to be moving... it became too much. The claustrophobia and the stir-craziness would always well up.
Madeleine had lived in a happy world in childhood, full of open plains, forests, campfire parties and just general happiness. She loved life as a gypsy, and she knew that it was a big part of her - but unlike her dad and her brother, she knew that she'd probably end up living in one place.
But when she was younger, over the summers, she and Shaun would sometimes go to bed, not knowing where they'd wake up the next morning. The excitement was always going to be hard to beat.
So whenever she knew that her parents were moving, and that she should be moving, the longing just to go out there, to live life on the road was overwhelming.
Of course, there were things that she had here that she'd never had at any camp, and things that she loved more.
But it didn't make this any less hard.
"Hey, you."
Madeleine opened her eyes to see Olivia's green ones staring back at her.
"Hey," she said tiredly. "What are you doing out here?"
"This is my yoga spot," Olivia said placidly, unrolling a mat made from some form of rushes onto the ground.
"Oh. Sorry," she said apologetically.
"It's fine." Olivia sat down on her mat and looked up at Madeleine with her curious green eyes. "You okay?"
She nodded. "I just needed some air. I needed to get out of the school; I'm a little stir-crazy."
"You look like hell," Olivia commented, smiling as she stretched gently.
Madeleine frowned. "Thanks so much."
"I'm only kidding," she replied with a chuckle. "Where'd the stir-craziness come from all of a sudden?"
"I'm not actually sure," Madeleine answered carefully.
"Well, I'm sure it'll be fine soon." With that, Olivia proceeded to twist her body into some pretty incredible shapes.
Madeleine watched her with growing bewilderment. How on earth was she managing to do that? Her body was being bent in ways that bodies shouldn't be bent. Ever.
Olivia looked at her bemused expression from behind a lithe leg. "You should try it sometime. It's relaxing."
"I don't think I could bend my legs like that," Madeleine chuckled. "That's something only you could pick up..."
Olivia grinned. "I sure hope you're not insinuating anything there, Madeleine?"
"Me? Insinuate? Never," she chuckled. "Tell me, did you make what you were doing the other day even a little bit respectable, and ask Jack out?"
"Now there's an idea," she replied, smiling enigmatically.
"Oh, please," Madeleine snorted. "You know as well as I do that you've fancied Jack from the word go. Ask him out - but please, don't ever make out with him like that in front of me again."
Olivia laughed evilly. "Oh, that was so much fun."
"For you, I bet it was," Madeleine said, making a face. "So... you're going to ask him out?"
"Maybe," she answered serenely through her legs.
Madeleine just shook her head. "I don't need to start stirring things here Olivia, do I?"
Olivia started laughing. "No, relax."
"Do you promise-"
"Never to do that to you again? Of course not," she cackled.
Madeleine had to smile. "You're terrible."
"Of course I am. I say awful things - but are you still stir-crazy?"
Well, she'd forgotten a little, but it didn't stop the choked feeling.
"Yeah, a little."
Olivia unravelled her legs and arms and patted the mat. "I'll show you how to do this, if you like."
"I'm good, I think I'll stay away from all that freaky New Age stuff," Madeleine teased, smiling.
Freaky New Age stuff... That was how Shaun had referred to her brief dabble in crystal healing.
"As you wish," Olivia said, stretching her arms up into the air.
Madeleine watched her quietly for a minute, a smile on her lips. "Ask him out," she said decidedly after a while.
Maybe stirring things might work.
Olivia just rolled her eyes.
