"Lee!"
"Mmm?"
"Lee, c'mon, talk!"
"Meeeeeeeeeeeh-hmmm..."
"What? Hey, LEE!"
Kira took to shaking his shoulders; jerking them back and forth angrily. The afternoon sun was beating down on her back mercilessly, and Kira's hair felt far too thick and long as it weighed down on her shoulders. Kira flicked it over her shoulder impatiently, wondering what it would be like to have short hair. Right now, it was tempting, but she'd just hate it later. She loved having long hair; even if her mother complained she didn't actually do anything with it.
Finally.
Lee eyes were opening groggily, registering her dim outline in the bright sunlight. She pressed her lips together, resisting the urge to laugh as she sat him up properly on the bench.
"You fell asleep."
He groaned. "Did I?"
"You did," she laughed, settling herself down beside him. The smile faded from her face quickly enough, replaced by a questioning frown. Lee still looked asleep. Where had those dark bags under his eyes come from? Why did his face look so worn?
Lee caught the expression on her face and sighed. "I couldn't help it."
"Help what?" It came out sharper than attended. She pressed her lips together, silently regretting it.
He'd noticed. "Jeez, that sounded accusatory!" he grinned, a spark of normality in his eyes. "Don't worry, cuz, it's nothing bad."
"Then what is it?" she laughed.
"Parmida," he replied simply, as though that would explain something.
Before her eyes, a tiger erupted, leaping towards her with a great roar. Parmida... as in... the ghost woman? The living dead? Living whatever kind of life she had far beneath them in the Catacombs?! What on earth did she of all people have to do with Lee's lack of sleep? Deron's voice drifted loud and goading into her head...
"Aww, what's the matter? Fwightened of the big, scwary ghost?"
It felt strangely inappropriate. All of a sudden, Kira was faced with a new, rather dislikable perspective of Deron's personality.
"I told you about Parmida... didn't I?" Kira said slowly.
He nodded. "Yes. You and Madeleine both did. I didn't think about it at the time, but later I was looking through some library books and... I came across her name."
Kira frowned. Why would that be...? "I suppose that's because she was a Head of the Warriors...?"
Lee half-nodded and shrugged. "Well, yeah, it mentioned that... But it mentioned something about her death, and I went back to thinking about it. So... well... I thought I'd look into the matter. It's taken a while, but I've found out about a book in the Dark Arts section of the Library- by Ulah Godfrey. Her book and Parmida was referenced in The Truth of the Truce."
Kira gaped at him, slightly impressed. "You... you did all that? Why?"
He smiled a little sheepishly. "Em... boredom, actually."
She laughed. "Wow! You weirdo."
"Awh, thanks," he muttered, rolling his eyes. "But never mind all that, why'd you shake me awake?!"
"Oh, training's at two."
Now it was Lee's turn to look confused. "Training...?"
Kira frowned at him, before a little chorus of, 'oh's exploded within her head. "Oh!" she echoed. "Madeleine says that we can come along to a Warrior Training thing!"
Lee's expression cleared, to be quickly replaced by a grin. "Wh- seriously?! Awesome!"
Awesome was the word alright...
"See you later, Lee," she smiled, as the school bell suddenly erupted into life behind them. She hovered awkwardly for a few moments, then chanced a light kiss on his forehead.
He frowned at her. "What was that for?"
"Nothing," she replied, as cheerily as she could.
"What?"
"Nothing," she repeated, picking up her school bag, and beginning to turn away. "Just remember... I love you, okay?"
For a moment, she didn't expect him to answer. He rarely did. But after a few brief seconds, he gave her a brief smile and nodded. "Alright then. Ditto."
"Mmm?"
