Olivia's long legs were crossed as she leaned against Jack on the couch. His arms were around her waist - which was good, because the temperature had dropped to below freezing point, and she was wearing a top that was completely unsuitable for the winter climate. It hadn't been quite so cold that morning. Madeleine had been in the room a minute ago, which had had Olivia and Jack sitting uncomfortably, not touching, on their best behaviour. There was an unspoken thought that acting like they usually did wouldn't be acceptable in front of someone who was in an almost grief-like state. It was really frustrating, though. Especially since Jack's every move made her want to "suck his face off", as someone very nicely put it. She wasn't a sl*t though, not really. This was just a bit of fun. Why would she be - especially when she had the example of what her mother had become? She was determined not to let that happen to her. A bit of fun was harmless though, right?

Jack was tired, his limbs were numb and he was basically dead. He'd spent the whole day out in the field with his team; out in the freezing, bitter wind with the hail and snow hammering them from every direction. Nature was one hell of an opponent, and it was Jack's dream to conquer it. Or at least escape to where it actually treated folks right. How about... oof. Spain? Spain would be okay. Or where was that other real hot place? Alabama? No. No. The Bahamas. That sounded more like it. Maybe Matt would know. Matt was like a bloody encyclopedia! Or Lee. Lee still remembered that sort of stuff didn't he? He was always a bit of a geek. Great guy, sure! But only geeks won chess tournaments. Only geeks beat Jack Trove at chess tournaments... Still, Lee wasn't doing so well at the moment, so he probably should refrain from mentally abusing the guy. Maddox- darn you, Jude!- Madeleine had just been here a few minutes ago, and Jack and Olivia couldn't even sit near each other for the fear of the look she'd get. Jack couldn't quite define what it was- but there was an unmistakable... look Madeleine got whenever she saw them- not just them- any couple. Olivia had called it 'wistful grief in the knowledge of the love she had lost'. Jack called it 'freaking miserable'. He hated seeing his Head that way. It got on his nerves. A lot of the time, he just wanted to shake her or something, but he knew it would be pointless. She maybe didn't get just how important she was to the school, but Jack sure as hell did. People got scared when she looked scared. Madeleine wasn't supposed to get scared. She was... She was Madeleine. And that was that.

Jack seemed tired, Olivia had noticed. He'd been out most of the snowy, freezing cold day - and for once she'd refused to be the supportive girlfriend and go and watch. Though of course, her motives for that were entirely selfish and hormone-inspired... But Jack didn't know that. Still, it had been really, really, really cold today, and on coming back, Madeleine had been talking to her, so she and Jack couldn't really talk... or do whatever they usually did. Olivia moved against him. "So how was practice?"

"Fine." Since when did Olivia of all people actually care enough to ask about sports? And the way she'd moved just there... what was she doing- trying to soften him up? For what? Did she want something...? Oh, right. Olivia always wanted something. Pleased with himself for figuring this out, Jack leaned down, and kissed Olivia's cheek. "You could always just ask."

Olivia twisted her head around and kissed Jack on the lips. "Now, wouldn't that be a little rude?"

"This is Jack Trove you're talking to," he laughed lightly, moving easily so he could return her kiss properly. "Seriously. Just say."

Olivia rolled her eyes at this as she reached up to kiss him again, feeling the familiar blood rush. "You're right, this is Jack Trove."

He sighed, leaning back again and stretching slightly. "Bad weather at the moment," he observed. "Least the ice hockey games are coming up now. God- me and Madeleine! Can you see it? Can't wait to whip Mr Hey Jude's ass- he doesn't think I can do it, you know."

Olivia had to giggle. "He doesn't think you can beat him? Jack, someone should point out to the guy that he goes around wearing a cowboy hat all the time." She'd saved herself a lot of embarrassment and hadn't signed up to the ice hockey games - she was a fair player, but she knew the Carers would get their sorry butts kicked...

Jack wagged a finger at her. "Don't let him fool y'all. I know you ain't into sports, but he's got a good, solid build, and bit of muscle tone there. See, what I reckon..." And he was off. Rugby. Football. Aerodynamics. The importance of balance and speed. Malcolm. Hockey. Dancing. Horse-riding. Malcolm, again. Even chess. Darts. Fox-hunting and its controversy. So on. So on. So on... And he just wasn't slowing up, either.

As soon as the sport-related stuff spewed from Jack's mouth, sensing the beginning of a rant, Olivia switched off. She didn't always do this - only when she realised that a long monologue would follow, which, in this case, it did. However, she was now having to fight off images of Jude's supposed "muscle tone". Ten minutes later whenever Jack was in a story about football again, and she was mind-numbingly bored, Olivia reached up and kissed him, cutting him off in mid-word. Pulling back a few seconds later, she mock-pouted at him. "Jack, we talked about this..."

Her lips had been a surprise, but he moved straight back into his sentence as though there hadn't been an interruption. "- but Beckham's such a wimp anyway- oh, what?" he stopped, staring at her, but he already recognized that look. He swore. "Olivia, come on- I'm just making conversation."

She rolled her eyes. "Oh honey, that's not a conversation, that's a monologue.

He pushed her away at that, so that she fell off his knee and landed with a thump on the couch. "It wouldn't be a monologue if you actually joined in," he grunted. "You could make an effort, you know."

Olivia frowned as she slid off his lap onto the couch. "I wouldn't do much good - you know I know absolutely nothing about sport." True. He complained about it oft.
