"You should straighten your hair."
Josh grimaced and looked up from his physics homework to see his best friend, Maggie Kestrel looking down at him, breaking the silence. "Thanks, but I kind of have better things to do. Like this."
She sank down beside him on the sofa, tossing her own perfectly straight platinum blonde hair. "I'll straighten it for you, if you like," she offered.
Josh rolled his eyes.
Typical Mags. She always wanted to alter his appearance in some way or the other - ranging from new clothes to a new hairstyle. She'd come running up to his dorm brandishing a trilby hat - "just like Justin Timberlake, Josh!" - and there he'd had to draw the line. Usually he was alright with Maggie trying to make him 'come out of his shell', except when it became insane - like hats or leather or something. Most of the time he just laughed at her.
The constant imploring to "come out of your shell, Josh! Come out!" was starting to get him into trouble, though. Someone had heard her and gotten completely the wrong end of the stick.
Explaining that had been fun.
"It's fine, Maggie," he said, scribbling down a calculation. "I don't need to straighten it."
"Oh, okay," she said, sounding slightly disappointed, but she picked up a strand of his dark hair and twisted it around her finger. "Please? You look really good with your hair straight..."
Josh chuckled and rolled his eyes again. "Physics, Mags?"
She sighed and sat back.
Josh looked back down at the words on the page and wrote down some more calculations.
Numbers. He liked numbers. He didn't know why, he just... did. Numbers were straightforward. They didn't mess about, like words. Numbers couldn't hurt. Words were sharp and hurtful - numbers couldn't do that. You can't lie with numbers, either.
Straightforward, steady, and honest.
Things that a lot of people were definitely not.
"I don't know how you can do that," Maggie's husky voice said.
"I like physics," he said, his pencil scratching across the page.
She smiled. "I know you do, but it's so boring."
He just shrugged. "It's numbers."
There was a silence for a minute, but he didn't mind. Silence was good. Sometimes people talked far too much. The quiet could be nice.
And with Maggie, silence was very rarely there. She was his best friend, but he had to admit, sometimes she talked way too much.
However, she stayed silent until he'd finished his homework, her blue-grey eyes lost in contemplation as she gazed at him vaguely. It was weird... silence and Maggie didn't often keep the same company.
He waved a hand tentatively in front of her face. "Mags?"
She blinked out of her reverie.
"Welcome back to the world," he chuckled. "Good daydream?"
She stared at him, eyes slightly narrowed. "I was wondering when my art homework is due for..."
"Tuesday," he said, closing his physics book.
He didn't actually take art, but Maggie was such a scatterbrain that she wrote her homeworks down on her hand and he memorized them for her.
"Thanks," she replied, leaning her blonde head back against the sofa and gazing at him.
He waited for the piece of news to sink in.
One... two...
She jumped as though she'd been electrocuted and sat bolt upright. "What?! Did you say Tuesday?"
He grinned at her expression. "Yes."
She cursed and jumped out of the chair, fleeing towards the stairs.
Josh chuckled. Scatterbrained Maggie. Nutty as a squirrel, but she was awesome. She was his best friend.
He looked about at the people in the common room, groups of people and couples. He was the only one sitting alone, but he didn't mind. Alone suited him. He was shy, and didn't like to talk unless it was to people he knew. Small talk was definitely not his thing.
He was fine with silence.
Silence was pretty good.
