Will hugged her knees even more tightly. The fire that had been blazing just a few hours ago was nothing more than burning embers now. She was freezing and doing nothing except for staring into space. She had been in fire control for her last period and she had failed to make herself a human torch. A flicker of fire. That was it. All she had been able to do. It was pitiful really. Tamika had tried to cheer her up but nothing had worked. "Oh," Will's frown deepened. The door creaked open and someone entered. Will didn't move. She sat there completely still.

Macy walked into the common room, and saw Will sitting in the corner. Macy hadn't known how to really talk to her friend after the battle. She walked over to her, leaving a slowly melting icy trail behind her. "Hey." She said, sitting down on the leather seat beside Will. There was silence flooding the room, and Macy stared into the embers of the fire. She tapped the table beside her, freezing and unfreezing the corner. "How have you been?" She asked, finally breaking the silence.

"I'm alright...I guess," Will tried rlighting the fire again. Nothing. "My powers aren't though. I know why they aren't. Our powers are tied to our emotions and my emotions are unbalnced at the minute..." Will clicked her fingers. A flicker of a flame again. "Oh well," Will sighed and turned to face Macy. "How have you been?"

"I'm okay, I suppose. Yeah, emotional blows can effect your gifts." Macy said, sighing. "When my grandmother died a couple of years ago, I couldn't even make an ice cube. You have to train your powers to listen to your brain, not your emotions, I had to do that. But it's really hard and painful." She said, looking into the fire, as a fire-eaten log fell into pieces though the grate. "But don't worry, every thing will get better. How's your school work?" she asked. It was a strange question, but she was the head of the Academics. Her nose was allowed to be in other's school work.

"Not bad, I'm doing really well in maths, which is strange but apart from that all is good," Will tried again and this time she made a small ember come alight and the fire was crackling again. "Yes! sorry...how's yours?"

Macy laughed as Will succeded in relighting the fire. "Well done! My school work's been good, you know." She laughed again. She was the head of the Academics, for goodness sake. "Let's try to get your fire working!" She sat up on her knees, trying to look cheerful. She cast her right hand over to the fire, freezing the flames. "Go on, try to set it on fire again." If she didn't practice her powers, then they may not be the same as they were.

Will held out her hand. It flickered red twice..no three times before it stayed red and melted the ice. "Come on, light you stupid thing!" she muttered. She clicked her fingers and a fire started again. "You're really good with ice, you know that? I never got round to telling you this but you, Jude and the other academics did a really good job in decorating this place on halloween. I thought the best parts were the ice sculptures and the lamps and the corner of the table and other things being frosted too," truth flooded Will's voice as she told Macy this.

Macy blushed as Will told her this. "Thank you." She smiled. "I would want to say that it's because I spent so much time since my birth practicing, but, well, since a got my powers, I have been practicing. But I wasn't born with my powers. Did I ever tell you how I got them? I don't really like telling people, it's a really strange story. Okay, when I was nine, I ran away from home, and I found this guy, and he was dying, and he grabbed my hands, and sort of...gave me them. I don't know who he was, I never saw him again, but if I haden't met him, I wouldn't be at this school." She said, fiddling with her hands. "Here." She handed a small ice sparrow to Will. "It's with ice that hopefully won't melt, but if it does, I'll do it again."

"Aww, it's so cute, thank you!" she hugged Macy. Is it just me opr is everyone running away from home to come here?! It was quite strange. She had heard so many stories from her friends about how they ran away from home just to come to the school. "You ran away? If you don't mind me asking, but why?"

"I didn't run away for long, after the guy gave me the powers, I woke up in a hospital bed. I ran away in protest, I suppose. My mum was...well, is always going out with these weird guys. And back then she was with the one guy, Andrew, who I really hated. She would act really strange around him, and she was going out and getting drunk more than usual. And he would always say these things to me, which I hated, and my mum...I don't know. I knew that she knew, if you know what I mean. We both knew that he was horrible, but I think Mum was so scared of losing him, she would ignore it. She been is loads of terrible relationships, and she didn't want this to be the same. And I knew that he would abuse her, but she wouldn't say anything. She would act like everything was okay, but it wasn't. And one night, I confronted her, and told her to leave him, but she said that she wouldn't. Then I told her that if she went out to meet him at the pub, I would run away. And she went. So, I stuck to my word, and left. I took the bus to a few towns over, and told people that my name was Natalia, and I slept in an old railway. After I returned, she finally left him after a year. I remember the night that she left him, she just came into my room and beat-up, and crying, and we just left. Augh, I'm sorry, I'm rambling. I just never really talked about it with my mum, after it. We moved, and started a new life. But I'm scared that she'll get herself into another relationship like that one. She's never had any good luck with guys, you know. She's too trusting." Macy wrapped a blanket around her, that belonged on the back on the chair she was sitting on. "Were you born with your powers?" She asked, trying to get the subject off of her.

"Yes, I was but I got them at a late age," Will thought about her answer, "I never was told about them or was taught how to use them until my godparents told me me. My mum committed suicide and my dad was shot, so I went to live with my godparents who I love dearly," She said this, with a little bit of pride. "It'll never be the same, ya know? but in some ways I feel it might have been better and I know that sounds awful but I can't help but think it. My parents know I love them and I know they love me whereever they are but...yeah," Will finished lamely. Was she sad or what?
