Why would you date someone you were repulsed by?
Several options surfaced at the back of Jude's mind, most of which he knew to be true. So if he knew the answer, why was he asking the question?
Something to do.
Whatever, so back to the point- why the hell would you date someone you were repulsed by?
Okay, so Jude didn't know Lee, or Chloe, or Madeleine, or even Kira that well. He had his own little group of friends- and he had the vague impression that it was a bit rude of him to sit around and observe them all the time. Even ruder still to admit to Lee he'd been eavesdropping. Well, sort of eavesdropping. Besides, Jude wasn't the only one so tuned into all the gossip. Kira, Lee, Madeleine and Chloe might be oblivious to it, but they'd been the centre of a lot of curiosity for quite some time now. Not the good kind of curiosity that inspired Einstein.
The kind of curious bored teenage girls were.
And the only reason Jude was so tuned in was because of Tameron. Tameron seemed to know everything. If she wasn't so bloody smart she would've made a Spy, easy peasy. Except she was hopelessly unfit. It was something he was always bugging her about. She was thin, sure, but she hadn't got any muscles on her. It sort of annoyed him, actually. He felt it should at least be a slight struggle to beat his sister in an arm wrestle.
Oh dear God... he was related to a wuss.
Levi of course was perfectly aware of all the attention he was getting. He was the kind of guy who needed his head deflated every so often. Because of his good looks compared to the decidedly goofy sort of looks Lee posessed, a lot of girls interested in the case were adamant he was the one Madeleine should pick.
Tameron said it was a bit like Grey's Anatomy, whatever the hell that was.
But Jude had watched them all... and... he liked Lee. He didn't talk to him to try and get in with the gossip or whatever. He liked what he saw about Lee, and he wanted to get to know him better. It was as simple as. And... he sort of felt like he had to fix it. That Coldplay song was him all over.
He spent way too much time worrying about other people.
The trouble was, with Chloe draping herself all over Lee at every opportunity, it was hard to find a chance to go about his little... 'fix' thing. She was kind of annoying- cute, definitely, but annoying. She hadn't thought much of herself before all this. Jude remembered well that she would sit around, her face half-covered by her hair. She never really smiled either. Just looked at books. She was sad.
He just wished he knew why.
But just because she was sad, it didn't really give her the right to have gone out with Lee right after Madeleine had dumped him. Jude got the feeling that Chloe was a rebound, and she knew it. He also got the feeling she didn't like facing up to it. Had she half-convinced herself Lee really cared?
He seemed to wince everytime she kissed him. Every time she fluttered her eyelashes at him, he grimaced. His mind was always on Madeleine. It was blindingly obvious- so obvious she probably cried herself to sleep about it.
Why bother spending so much time running from the truth?
And Lee was dating this girl because... he knew this too. Maybe he'd never quite seen it to its extreme, but he knew something of it, and was guilty about it. But Jude had seen the way Lee looked at Madeleine. For God's sake- he'd heard them talking!
Madeleine was really a bit thick.
Jude sighed, straightening up and looking across the Common Room. His eyes settled on a boy he'd noticed around Lee- Brian. Brian was funny, goofy and silly- acted immature because he knew it got him attention, and he craved attention from the bubbly girl who was between Mike and Jack. Ellie was cute too- but a different sort of cute from Chloe. Ellie was sort of sexy in her cuteness. Jude could see why Brian liked her so much.
But Ellie had no idea. Shame.
Over there- that small girl with the large glasses. She was only young, far too young to hate everybody like she did. Worst part was, the person she hated most of all was herself. Look at her posture, that terrible slump in her shoulders. She never makes eye contact with anyone, just sits and stares at the floor. Everyone thinks she's shy. The truth is she's silently cursing them all to the fiery depths below.
Tameron sat beside her in Biology, see. Tameron was like Jude in the way she just knew things.
The problem was, Jude only knew half of this stuff because of one his powers- enhanced senses. Before, he'd known the world was a bit screwed up, but all in all, it seemed a pretty alright place. Still seemed pretty alright, now that he was used to all that other stuff. He heard almost everything. It's how he'd come to learn so much about people. But half the stuff he knew was just weird. He didn't like to think about sad things. And if he did, it was about how to fix them.
So, he wasn't really being nosy at all. He was just getting out his mental first aid kit. Problem was, no-one ever wanted help. That was the thing. People can quite blissfully go through life effing and blinding like madmen-
Okay, let's go do some Spanish homework, shall we?
