He tapped his nose. "Patience is a virtue." Beth would say it all the time to him. It drove him mad.

Madeleine laughed. "Aw, no way! I'm not a patient person!" This was going better...

He rolled his eyes at her. "Do you make things deliberately awkward or something?"

What?! Madeleine frowned at that. "Not deliberately," she answered coolly. "Awkwardness just has a habit of following me about." It came out sharply; and her tone was cool enough to chill anyone. Where had that come from? They'd just started being less awkward and then he just..

Lee was confused. Why'd Madeleine gone at him like that? Didn't she realise he was joking? Curse his stupid mouth. Curse it, turn it black, and let it fall off and smash into a thousand pieces. "Thanks," he replied, his tone surprising him. It was a perfect reflection of her's. "I was joking, but that whole awkward thing is always something to watch out for."

And there it was again, and now his tone was cool. Well, that was just fine then. "Hmm," she murmured coldly. Now it was awkward again. Ironic or what? But the thing was, they'd just made up. They didn't need this again - it wasn't like them. They were meant to be cute, and blissfully happy... She sighed. "Sorry. We're really not good at this."

He smiled half-heartedly. "You noticed too, huh?" If he was in a fairytale, he'd make a terrible Prince Charming.

There. It was out now. Did that make it official? It was so awkward, and things weren't working out as they should be. But they'd work through it, right? She really, really liked Lee - so much it was scary - and she really wanted this to work. "Yeah," she said softly, sadly. "I noticed."

Don't do that, Madeleine... Please don't do that... "We're fine, you know," he said abruptly. "Awkward silences have never happened to us before. Tomorrow it'll be back to normal." Please...

Please be right... But it wasn't just the silences. It was the arguments, the shyness... She smiled brightly. "Yeah, you're right." She wasn't so sure, but for now, she'd just believe him. It was easier, and it was better to go along with this than start another argument.

The words were there, but he couldn't say them. He could never say them properly. So they were left unsaid, and they (Madeleine and Lee) were suspended in mid-air, each circling the other in that mad world of confusion. Of infatuation. Of lust. Of lov- Not yet. Nearly. But not yet. Did she know that? He couldn't say it. He could. He couldn't. "Madeleine..." Bracing himself, he cleared his throat, forcing himself into the right frame of mind...

Lee cleared his throat. "Madeleine..." She left her thoughts and turned her head to look up at him. "Yes?"

Say it... "I..." Five seconds passed and went, and his words and thoughts had been stripped of him. Then... words... coming... coming... "Will you teach me how to plait your hair?" ARGH!!

"Will you teach me how to plait your hair?" Well, she couldn't say that he wasn't attempting to break the ice... "Sure," she laughed. "Now?"

"No," he laughed, "some other time. I've just always been curious. But I actually promised I'd meet Kira. She's been putting off her maths homework- again."
