"Argh!"
Madeleine's grunt of effort went out across the room as the waves of air spread from her hands, rippling out at an invisible speed, knocking over all the training objects in the way.
It was a really great effort at the airwaves, but Madeleine wasn't satisfied. It had to be perfect.
Nothing less than perfect would win her this war.
Nothing less than perfect would keep them all alive.
Nothing less than perfect would make Shaun proud.
Kira's words the other night had hurt her more than she was going to let on. It had been below the belt, that insult... but what if she was right?
It wasn't something Shaun would be proud of, what she'd done. But then again, if Shaun had been alive when Madeleine saw Lee and Chloe in the forest, Lee would be dead. Quite literally, stone cold dead and in the crypt with Parmida and the corpses there. Angry Shaun was deadly.
Literally.
She shot out another ring of airwaves around her, tinged with an underlying current of venom. Venom at everyone. Anger at them all.
Being annoyed made Madeleine really antisocial.
She regretted slapping Kira. Even though she hadn't put much effort into the slap, it was bound to have hurt. Not that that was the point. Kira was only trying to defend her cousin, and only trying to fix what Madeleine had supposedly hurt.
Only she wasn't convinced. If Lee had really, truly, honestly felt that way about her - the way she felt about him - well, why would he have kissed Chloe? Why would he have had his arms wrapped around her, like snakes in a -
No!
The waves rang out from Madeleine with a force that was shocking from someone so small. Shocking from anyone.
Kira had been lying. Of course she had, to try and make her feel guilty. Sick. And now, Madeleine could prove it.
There had been news spreading about from early that morning. Big gossip. Involving Lee.
And Chloe.
The air waves shot out again, with even more devastating speed and force, sending the fallen objects flying into the walls.
If only Chloe were in the room...
No, she didn't mean that. If Chloe really made Lee happy - the thing that Madeleine didn't seem to be able to do - , if Madeleine really cared for him, shouldn't she be happy for them?
Probably.
But it didn't make it easy. Not in a longshot.
As far as Madeleine was concerned, Chloe had been a driving force in wrecking her relationship with Lee. She'd killed it.
And now, Madeleine would have to put up with her smiling at her smugly every time she saw her. Oh, it had happened. This morning, she'd passed Chloe in the Entrance Hall. The little chienne had had the sheer nerve to smile shyly at her, as if Madeleine couldn't kill her on the spot for what she was doing.
But she wouldn't.
For Lee.
Even though she could hardly bear to admit it, she still cared about him. Much too much.
Only now, instead of wanting him to feel the same way, she wanted him not to at all. Because if he did...
This next air wave was weaker, rippled with a lack of confidence.
The news that greeted her when she woke up this morning had upset her more than she'd ever let on. So when she stalked out of the common room, one word was going through her mind.
Levi.
Honestly, what would it hurt? Madeleine was convinced that he had been genuine. And if he really did like her... what harm could it do? She was getting a break. Getting some space.
Breathing new air.
This airwave was calmer, the undercurrent of anger and tension slowly fading.
But the stings were still there.
The one that hurt the most was Kira's comment about Shaun. Madeleine wanted... needed him to be proud of her. Needed him to still love her, no matter what she did. And she knew, deep down, that Kira was right in at least part of what she said.
Madeleine spun around quickly, sending out the next round of airwaves. These went around with a speed and force that would knock any body-builder down.
As the waves left her hands, the door the training room opened, but slammed shut immediately after it opened with the sheer force of the speeding waves.
Madeleine stopped sending out the waves, and a few seconds later, the heavy metal lined door opened, and a grinning Levi stepped through.
"Nice waves."
Madeleine relaxed, and smiled. "Thanks."
"Welcome," he said, matching her smile and coming over to her. "Have you been in here all day?"
"Pretty much," she admitted, trying to suppress the sensation that her skin was crawling as Levi put an arm around her. "Will wanted to train Daniel. Things didn't go too well, so I'll have a word with him about anger management."
"Want me to do it?" he asked, almost eagerly.
She shook her head. "I'm Head, I'll do it."
He was momentarily distracted by her hair flicking as she shook her head, a strange and unreadable expression at the back of his hazel eyes.

Her common sense was right, for once. Stop before you hurt yourself.
