Jealousy was an ugly colour.
It was something that Levi had been told often in his life, but now, the phrase was running through his head again, in his dad's voice.
Jealousy's an ugly colour, Levi...
He was a jealous guy. He couldn't exactly help it, could he? He just didn't like people having things that he wanted. He'd always been like that.
He was getting better at hiding it, though.
Madeleine was talking on the stage at the front of the training room, and a surge of jealousy ran through Levi again. It should have been him.
He just didn't get it. What did that small, petit girl have that he didn't? What gave her a better qualification to be Head - and more than that, Head of the Warriors?
Just... look at her. Madeleine was smart, and strong - even Levi couldn't deny it. And she was a good speaker, and was pretty organised.
But so was Levi. And he was more than that - he was smarter, far stronger, he came from a long pedigree of Warriors, and he could organise and speak to people. His offensive powers were much better than Madeleine's, and he'd mastered the art of creative killing far better than she had. There was no doubt that he could do a better job as Head.
So why was she Head? She was - he hated to say this - female, she was short, pretty, tiny, and did not seem agressive enough to be a Warrior. Aside from her eyes, and the scars on her - and they were visible - you wouldn't think that she was a Warrior. It was like a poodle in a pack of Rottweilers.
"...and at the minute, the Spies are working towards finding out why Macy was kidnapped. If it works, well, Marius Hoodham won't be best pleased, so we need to be on our guard..." Madeleine's clear voice was saying.
He watched her talk moodily, then picked up his attention as he saw her send a faltering glance towards Lee.
According to a useful source, the 'happy couple' hadn't been so happy recently. In fact, they'd been arguing. And Levi had found an opening; a way to get what he wanted.
Really, the plan was genius, even for him. And it had all come from that little magical green monster on his shoulder.
First, to put one thing straight - Levi did not like Lee Norris. He just didn't. Lee had beaten him in a chess tournament, and it had been humiliating. From then, he just hadn't liked the guy. Was that so wrong?
And now, Lee was going out with Madeleine, who was the Trophy Girlfriend. She was a Head, which made her pretty much the elite, and she was hot.
So why did nerdy chess boy have her?
This was worrying Levi. Lee was cousin of the Head of the Spies, and boyfriend (yes, they'd now made it official) of the Head of Warriors. Whether he'd realised it or not, Lee had a lot of influential power when it came to the groups.
Power that Levi wanted. And power that he was going to get.
Madeleine and Lee were arguing, and he could see that this was worrying Madeleine. So, he was getting to her, making little comments and planting seeds of doubt in her mind. So far, it looked like it was working.
She'd get fed up of it eventually; it would become too much - enter Levi, her shoulder to cry on.
If he persuaded her - by hook or by crook - to choose him, well...
Now Madeleine was coming off the stage. As she walked past him, he caught her arm quietly.
She turned to him angrily. "Levi, what?!"
Oooh, she was angry. They'd argued again.
Surpressing the sense of glee, Levi twisted his face into a sympathetic, concerned expression. "Are you okay?"
Instead of warming to it, she looked mutinous. "Why do you care?"
It didn't faze him. "You look a bit upset, that's all."
"I'm fine," she stated. "Why would I be upset?"
He shrugged. "No reason. Just... you know if you want to talk, I'm here, right?"
She softened, but still looked a little suspicious. "It's fine, but thanks."
Levi smiled, letting go of her wrist, and glancing at Lee and Kira to check that they hadn't noticed.
As she walked away, he grinned. He'd get her - and he'd finally prove that anything she could do, he could do better.
