"... So, you'll need to revise, not only the practice, but the theory as well..."
Several groans sounded in the room.
"Now, come on," Professor Archer reprimanded. "How do you expect to use your powers if you don't know how to use them? Exams are important... so, I've prepared some books for you to revise from."
He glanced at two huge stacks of books and they floated over, giving themselves out.
As the two massive; heavy books were placed in front of Levi, he hissed to Madeleine, "How do they expect us to revise this much when we've got constant battle training sessions?"
"Is that a hint that I should cut down on training?" Madeleine said coolly as the books set themselves in front of her.
He snorted. "No. I'd rather be training that sorting through this rubbish trying to find what I need to know."
"If it weren't for this rubbish, you wouldn't have the powers to use in training," she answered, frowning slightly as she leafed through the books. "I have to agree with you though; I don't know where I'm going to get the time to do everything."
"Know anyone who can control time?" Levi asked, flicking through the books with an expression akin to someone who stepped in dog poo.
She sighed. "No. Whoever can is a lucky person indeed."
Honestly, the exam timetable had just come out, and she hadn't started revising. There'd been so much going on, what with the rescue mission and the constant battle training; never mind that she was trying to learn, make plans as Head, look out for her Warriors, and having a relationship with someone - they now needed to add exams onto her already overloaded plate.
"The combat exam should be a cinch, though, after the battle," Levi added. "We should be fine."
"We still want to revise though," she frowned. "Bloody exams."
Air Control was getting easier to bear, though. Levi and Madeleine had had to put up with and be nice to each other during the battle and when they were using their air powers to lift Ollie home. For example, they'd started to use each other's first names. However, Levi's competitiveness hadn't dissolved, and he was still an over-confident, sexist... okay, well, she shouldn't go there.
But a truce didn't mean that they were suddenly best friends. They were just being civil to each other, and Levi had realised that as his Head, Madeleine needed to be treated with respect (unsurprisingly, she didn't discourage this), but they were by no means bosom friends.
Levi still managed to find ways to insult Madeleine; he still teased her about her 'useless' powers and being female - but what was really getting on her last nerve was the fact that he found it hilarious that she was sort-of-dating the school's four-time chess champion.
What was wrong with being good at chess? She didn't know, but she did know that Lee was not your typical nerdy chess player. In fact, Lee was not nerdy at all. He was intelligent and an excellent logic thinker, but he wasn't nerdy.
In fact, he was rather cool.
There was one thing about him that drove Madeleine mental though - he knew nothing about music. Literally nothing. You know those classic anthems that everybody has heard? 'Free Bird'? 'Losing My Religion'? 'Livin' On A Prayer'? 'Teenage Kicks'? Well, not everybody had heard them. Lee hadn't.
Being a music freak, this really irritated Madeleine, and she was using her status as sarcasm-and-punch partner to introduce Lee to music, but in all honesty, she wasn't sure where to start.
Yep, he was that bad.
Professor Archer interrupted her thoughts. "For revision, sometimes it helps to pair up..."
She glanced at Levi. "I guess that means we've to help each other, then."
"Again," he groaned.
"...Though, for today, I would like you to revise on your own, in silence," Professor Archer finished.
Madeleine breathed in relief, then nearly cried out at the amount of references the unsupported piece of chalk was writing on the board.
Breathing excercises... motions... She rarely thought about these things when she was using her power. Things just went. She just did it. Still, she needed this theory to pass her exam, didn't she? She just needed to concentrate on this.
Only, she was finding it hard to concentrate what with idle thoughts of battle training, how much revision she had to do, her "study date" with Lee the next day, and how annoying the scratching of Levi's pen was.
Then Levi whispered to her. "I heard you arguing with your chess-nerd boyfriend at battle training."
Madeleine rolled her eyes, pretending to study from her book. "I told you, he's not exactly my boyfriend, he's not a nerd, and we weren't arguing."
"Yes, you were," Levi muttered adamantly. "We all saw."
"We all?" she said, putting down her pen.
He looked sheepish. "Well, just me, really."
"Eavesdropper."
"Come on, you were showing a sign of emotion. It was just such a weird thing."
She looked at him with dislike. "And where is this supposed to be going?"
"What were you arguing about?"
"That's none of your business!" she exclaimed quietly.
Not quietly enough.
"Miss Baudelaire, Mr Ryder," Professor Archer called in a dangerous voice. "Silent, solitary revision..."
"Sorry," they muttered, turning back to their books.
Levi continued in a low whisper. "It must have been something pretty big for you to get so het up about. You got pretty heated. I take it things aren't working out sugar sweet for you two?."
She swore.
"Language," he admonished.
"Levi, thanks for the concern, and all, but it's none of your business. Leave it be," she scowled.
He smirked at her, looking strangely satisfied. "Wow, it must have been big."
Thank goodness the bell rang, so it covered Madeleine's sharp reply.
"What was that?" he said, in an imitation of being innocent.
"Never mind," she snarled, slamming the heavy book shut and stowing it in her bag before stalking out, thankful that she could get away from him and his smug tone.
What did he know? He was trying to get to her, trying to wind her up. The question was... why was he doing it?
