"So, class, could you all line up along the back wall, please?"
There was a scraping of chairs as the class got up and ran to the back on the room, lining up and facing Professor Archer.
Madeleine was squashed in between a pretty red-haired girl and a boy with curly blonde hair. Professor Archer was going up the line one person at a time, and pointing everyone towards the right hand side of the room.
She glanced at the redhead and whispered, "What's he doing?"
"No clue," the girl murmured, shaking her head. "I'm Olivia, by the way."
"Madeleine," she muttered back.
Prof. Archer finished with the person on the other side of Olivia and turned to her. "Miss Leishman? When did you come into your powers?"
Olivia frowned. "Not that long ago, sir. I discovered my air power by accident. My mother was yelling at me and I kind of... levitated."
"Have you been taught how to manage the powers at all?"
"No, sir," Olivia said respectfully. "I was so shocked that I landed on top of my mum. And I wasn't able to control it properly after that."
Prof. Archer laughed. "Alright, over to the right-hand side please." As Olivia walked off, he turned to Madeleine. "And you, Miss Baudelaire? When did you come into your powers?"
Madeleine glanced over at the others at the other side of the room. "Quite early on, sir. My mother has been teaching me how to control my powers since I was about eight."
Prof. Archer raised an eyebrow. "Really?"
"My mother found her powers early too, sir," Madeleine said. "She used to go here? Rhiannon McKee?"
Prof. Archer smiled. "Yes, yes, I remember Rhiannon. You have her eyes."
Madeleine blushed with pleasure. "Thank you sir."
"So you've been taught? If I asked you to levitate about a foot into the air...?"
Madeleine focused on her energy, and rose a foot in the air, then hovered there.
Prof. Archer broke into a broad smile. "Excellent! Now, go over to the left-hand side of the room."
Madeleine dropped down to the ground and walked over to the other side of the room.
Why was she now at the other side of the room? He wasn't about to separate them into ability groups? While this could be a good idea, it was really going to alienate the people on the left-hand side, so to speak.
As she met the stares of the people opposite her, she heard Prof. Archer say,"Well, Mr. Ryder, if you would join Miss Baudelaire over there..."
She turned around to see the attractive dark-haired guy walking towards her. As he walked, Professor Archer turned to the "right side" people and starting talking to them.
"Mr. Ryder" reached her and kicked up slightly into the air and bowed in mid-air with a flourish.
Madeleine raised an eyebrow.
"Levi Ryder," he said, coming back to terra firma and extending his hand.
"Madeleine Baudelaire," she said, shaking his hand, unimpressed. "Nice to meet you."
He smiled confidently at her. "Pleasure's all mine."
Madeleine nodded with a forced smile.
"So you know how to control air then?" Levi asked.
Madeleine stared at him. "I don't think I know exactly... I've been being taught about it for about 7 years. I know enough."
He grinned triumphantly. "Hmm."
Lord, this guy was c*cky. Everything about him, his smile, his walk, his talk...
"You?" she asked.
"I know quite a good bit," he said confidently.
Madeleine smiled politely, but was inwardly rolling her eyes.
Professor Archer turned to the two of them. "Mr Ryder, Miss Baudelaire, would you two care to give us a demonstration of what air control can be used to do?"
Madeleine smiled at him and focused on bending the air around her. There was a certain trick to it, that you had to master...
And there it was. She was rising gracefully into the air.
Unfortunately, so was Levi. Determined to beat her, he was rising higher in the air.
She grinned. Your call there, Levi..
He rose to the ceiling, then suddenly dived down to about half-way down the room, making some of the girls gasp in fear. Rising up, he gave Madeleine a "beat that" look.
Rising to the challenge, she grinned, kicking out gently with her legs and rising to the the top of the room, skimming the ceiling as she flew along. Suddenly, she dropped down to the bottom of the room, quickly turning around and skimming across the floor just before she hit the ground.
Levi rolled his eyes and flew forward horizontally at an amazingly fast speed. Just as he was about to hit the wall, he zoomed upwards... backwards.
Madeleine grinned and soared upwards, then did a backwards double somersault through the air, to amazed "Whoa"'s from below.
Levi frowned and did a backflip on the spot, thinking of what to do next.
Professor Archer, realising that this was going to turn into World War III, quickly intervened. "Well, wasn't that amazing? Let's give these two wonderful fliers a round of applause."
The applause was deafening, but Madeleine, as she sunk gracefully to the floor, couldn't help but suspect that part of this was due to Levi's good looks and white smile.
Prof. Archer clapped his hands sharply once. "Well, if we could go to our seats. Alphabetical order, please..."
Excellent, Madeleine thought, trying to find another "B". She'd get rid of Levi...
Then Prof. Archer cleared his throat. "But Miss Baudelaire, Mr. Ryder, if you could two could stay together at that desk over there, please?"
Ack, sod's law.
Madeleine followed Levi over to the desk. "That was some pretty impressive stuff you did there," she said.
He grinned, setting his bag down beside his chair. "Thanks. So did you, I didn't expect you to be that good."
I'm a Baudelaire, Madeleine thought. You won't beat me. "Why not?"
Levi grinned sheepishly. "Well, no offence, but you are a girl. And you don't look like a hardcore ... well, anything, really."
Madeleine's jaw dropped. "I'm sorry?"
He grimaced. "Sorry, that was mean."
Madeleine rolled her eyes.
"Well, class, if you could all copy this down..." Professor Archer said, writing the course outline on the board.
Levi immediately started writing diligently.
Madeleine rolled her eyes again and started to write. She glanced at Levi's pen and flicked her gaze upwards.
The pen soared up.
"What the-" Levi muttered, as the pen flew up out of his hand.
Madeleine allowed herself to smile for a second over her work.
He jumped up and grabbed the pen, but as he sat back down, his page slid foward across the desk.
He grabbed it and pulled it back, immediately starting to write.
Madeleine grinned, shaking her head slightly. Psychokinesis rocked.
