A Job Well Done

[Macy Deltine]

Macy walked across the hospital wing slowly. She was trying to get back on her feet as lying on the bed was making her legs go numb. She walked back and forth along the room, looking out the windows as she went.
Some of the other patients were watching her, but she ignored them and continued silently.
She stopped and saw someone enter the room. She thought it was one of the workers whom she had learnt the name of, Rachel, who could be very annoying at times, but it wasn't. It was Kira. She watched as her friend came in and went over to her.

"Macy!" cried Kira in relief, panting slightly from her sprint. She may be gifted with super-speed, but it didn't stop it from being exhausting. "Hi! Wow! You're up!"
Ok, just wait until your head stops spinning and then you can tell her... and wow you're sweaty... gross...

Macy was kind of schocked at Kira who was looking dizzy and out of breath.
"Yeah, I'm up...are you okay?" she asked, feeling a bit worried. Why was she here? "Here, sit down.." She said, gestering her bed. She went over and sat on it and waited for Kira to follow.

Kira sank down gratefully on the soft mattress.
"They've found him, Macy," she sighed, grinning despite her exhaustion. "They've found him..."

Macy stared at her friend and quietly said "What? You..you know where he is? Wha- where? Where is he?" She could not believe that she had done it. Macy thought it would be impossible, but she did it. Without realising it, she wrapped her arms around Kira, hugging her. It was the first time she had touched anyone like this, usually she would start screaming, but she didn't know how she felt now. Tears streamed down her face as she buried her head in Kira's shoulder. "Thank-you...thank-you.." She kept saying.

A thrill of mingled shock and joy ran through Kira. Quietly, awkwardly, she reached around and hugged her friend back, letting Macy's tears fall freely. She couldn't believe this... more so, she couldn't believe she'd done this. It had cost her next to no effort, and Macy was suddenly sobbing with joy on her shoulder.
Kira had done that.
"He's staying at the Cardsdale hotel, under the name of Michael J. Florence," Kira said softly to Macy. "He's in Room 27, Floor 2. I... think he's there with one of his comrades, whom he referred to as Polly. I was thinking... what if we got one of them in? I have the power of hypnoses and I could get some really valuable information..."

Macy listened partially to what Kira was saying. She really didn't know what she was feeling, and in amongst everything, Natalia wanted to get out, and get to work. Since Macy was feeling so weak and slightly vulnerable, but didn't realise that Natalia was taking the opportunity to get out. She sat up, and looked at the blond girl whom her sister was hugging.
"Thank-you." She said in her sleek voice. "My sister and I are awfully pleased. Oh yes, you don't know me, do you? I'm Macy's sister, Natalia. Never heard her mention me? Well, she's ashamed of me. Karen, is it? Yes, I think taking one of them will work well, it won't be too hard to get one. Those scumbags.." She said, looking around the room. "Eugh.." She mumbled, looking at the other patients. Suddenly, Macy was using all her force to get Natalia to change back. "I'll see you later then.." She said to Kira and let Macy return.
Macy fell forward on the bed, letting the tears run down her face again. She looked up though her messy hair that was hanging on her face. What would Kira think of her?
"I am so sorry.." She said, before hiding her head in the bed covers.

Kira gazed open-mouthed as Natalia melted away back into Macy. A leaden feeling had suddenly settled into the pit of her stomach, and uncertainty had settled in, chilling her. Confusion was such a funny feeling. Have you ever been walking up the stairs, and thought there was one extra step at the top? At the top, you fall forward, and stumble a little. There's that swoop in your stomach- and it stays with you, just for a few seconds. That little, "Oh!" inside your head.
Curiouser, and curiouser, as Alice said.
That strange surprise had filled Kira now, but all she could say was, "My name's not Karen."

Macy looked up at Kira, surprised at her first reaction. She could have screamed and called her a freak, but instead, she simply said 'My names not Karen.'
"It's no use telling her that, she dosen't care." She replied, looking up though the hair that was hanging across her face. "Please, don't tell anyone. It's..it's really hard to explain, just trust me, okay?" She climbed back on the bed and crossed her legs. "I'm sorry." she said again.

"Macy, I'm sorry," Kira shook herself slightly. "Um... what exactly happened? You were you and then..."
That other girl had seemed different. She hadn't said anything bad, not really, but something had definitely been... off about her. She was the extra step. She was the thing that made you fall.
