Valentine's Night. The most romantic night of the year. Apparently.
Macy looked up at the stars from the edge of Blueberg forest, shivering, but not from the cold. She couldn't feel the cold, if she could, then she would always be frozen. Others told her that her skin was icy, though, and she was glad that she didn't have to feel it all the time.
She looked around her, trying to control her breathing, but failing, when it sped up at every noise. She saw a couple walk from the school, over to the benches on the side of the forest, at the top of the garden. Macy couldn't go up there anymore, atleast at night, as it was the place where she was kidnapped. She watched the two people for a while, until they started to kiss, and she had to look away. She waited a couple of minutes, but heard an explosion and then screaming. She quickly turned around and saw that something had exploded up near their feet. The girl was standing up, looking frantically around her, and the guy was trying to look less scared than he actually was.
Macy felt herself smirk, as she knew who was the cause of all the commotion. She turned around, trying to find the culprit, but didn't see anything. She was sure it was him, though, who else could it be?
"Macy!" She heard someone whisper behind her, coming from somewhere in the forest. She was going to say something, but decided to follow Steve's voice.
Finally she found him, creating sparks of electricity with his fingers, to make it easier for her to find him.
"Hey!" She said, catching up to him, feeling slightly out of breath. "Why am I here?" She asked, looking around her. It was in a small clearing, near the main path that led off the to lake. She didn't hear him reply, but she could still see the shadows on his face, which lit up, every time he made a spark. He was smiling, and his hair was green, as usual. It seemed that he was wearing a grey hoodie, with a logo that Macy couldn't read properly. She looked down at what she was wearing, her worn jacket, old jeans and her long stripy scarf. Atleast she wasn't meant to dress up.
She sighed, and looked around her, giving up on trying to hear an answer.
"So, you're not at the dance in the hotel, then?" He asked her after a while. He had started to walk, and Macy didn't realise that she was following him.
"Oh, no. I hate Valentine's day. It always ends up with my mum coming home in tears, and I always had to take care of her for the next couple of days, weeks sometimes. I'm not good with Valentines." She said, making a speech, while trying to keep up with him, as they blindly walked though the forest.
"Good, I hate Valentine's too. I always hated the humiliation in school, when we had to make cards for each other, I received none, of course, except pity cards. It totally blows." He said, leading her up a small clearing in the forest.
"But seriously, what are we doing? I call the police if you try to kidnap me, or something."
"Oh, I'm not kidnapping you. But you'll have to wait." He said, as he started to lead them of a hill. She sighed, and stopped to look around. It was clear that from the top of the hill, you would be able to look across the whole forest, even the village. Finally he stopped and turned around, to look at the view. Macy ran up the rest of the hill, and caught her breath at the view.
"Wow.." She said, looking down over the village, across the forest, and she could see the towers from the school.
"I know, right?" Steve said, excitedly. "This is perfect." He said, laughing. He sat down on the grass, hugging his knees. Macy sat down slowly beside him, still amazed by the view.
"But..why are we up here?" She asked, gazing down in amazement to the village.
"Because you hate Valentines and I hate Valentines, this is a perfect place to hate Valentines day together." He said, smiling. Macy looked at him suspiciously. He looked at the village, and nodded towards group of people, that were coming out from what looked like the hotel. Macy looked down at them, and looked up at Steve again.
He concentrated on the people, and she heard a bang, and some screaming. She looked up at Steve again, who was trying to contain his laughter. Finally Macy realised what he was planning. An ambush on the happy couples. She thought over the idea, about how cruel it was, but then decided against her better judgment.
She realised that Steve was waiting on her answer on it all, she gazed back down to the village.
"There's, um, some people kissing by the cafe." She said quietly.
He burst out laughing, and looked over at the people she was pointing at. A small clay plant pot exploded near their legs.
"Oh, hey, here." Steve said, sticking his hand in the pocket of his hoodie. He pulled out a piece of paper and unfolded it, and gave it to her. She looked at it, and saw his sparking his fingers for her. Under the new light she saw that it was a portrait of the photo that he had seen a few weeks ago, of when she had dyed her hair black.
"Oh, and you'll probably want this back." He said, giving her the original photo. She snatched it from him, and shoved it in her pocket. She looked down at the picture that he had done for her again.
"Oh, holding hands in the garden." He said, pointing over to the school gardens to the west. A couple of seconds later there was a distant explosion and screaming.
"You know we're going to get into so much trouble for this?" She asked.
"Yep, but still. It was worth it, don't you think?" He said, lying down on the grass, looking up at the stars. Macy laughed, agreeing with him, and leaned on her right arm. She couldn't see many couples outside anymore.
"I think we've scared them off." She said after a few minutes of silence.
He laughed, still staring at the night sky. After a few more minutes of silence, Macy caught her breath as Steve sat up, grabbed her shoulders, making her lye down on the grass with him. She felt him put his head on her shoulder, but she didn't move. His hair touched her cheek, and had to make herself breath deeply, incase she started shaking. She tried to search for something to say, but she found no words in the stars.
Macy felt him move a bit, but she continued to stare intently at the sky. She then felt something that she was not expecting. He had positioned himself that he his head was slightly above hers, and he had leaned over and kissed her forehead. She shot up, bolt right, out of breath, as if she had just one for a run.
"What? What is it? Was it...I'm sorry, I'm sorry." Steve stared to apologise to her.
"No, no, it's fine, you just caught me...off guard." She said, not knowing exactly what had just happened. Even though she couldn't see him that well, she could see that he was frowning. Macy felt bad, and leaned over to Steve again. He sighed and leaned back on his arms.
"We better start to go back to the school." He said, pushing himself up, off the ground. He pulled up Macy, and they started to walk down the hill, towards the path.
As they were walking though the forest, Macy could hear come sounds coming from the dark of the forest. She stopped, and looked around her, memories flooding back from the night that she was taken. Steve put his arm around her, guiding them on, though the forest.
"Don't worry." She heard him say, through a laugh. "I'll protect you."
