Macy sat on her bed, staring out the window. It was Saturday morning, and her other roommates where elsewhere, and she decided to retreat back to the solitude of their large room. She gazed out, over the school grounds. It was a cloudy, but dry, day. The weather was slowly getting better, as they were drawing nearer to spring. In the gardens, you could find a large collections of carefully kept bulbs that were sprouting, in time for the good weather.
She broke out of her daze, and looked around the room, over at the other's beds. The room was looking relatively tidy, all the beds were made, and a couple of books were lying on the floor. She noticed somebody's homework lying by the window seat. She got up and walked over to the seat, and sat down on the cushions, to get a better look of the world outside her window. She saw some people walking out from the forest, and a group of five girls heading to wards the path into Cardsdale, but apart from that, nothing strange or unusual. She sighed, and touched the glass, creating some frost, but she then blew on it, making it melt away. She then heard some knocking on the door, and she looked up. She thought it would just be once of the cleaning staff, looking for their laundry, but she then remembered that they had come the day before. The knocking came again, and she stood up and went over to it.
She opened the door and was surprised to have someone jumping on her.
"I'm free!" She heard the body say, and she immediately knew who it was.
"Steve!" She shouted, hugging him harder. He jumped across the room and landed on her bed, bouncing it. His hair was bright green, and his face was alive.
"Wha-when did you get out?" She asked, feeling slightly ecstatic at seeing him. She went over and sat beside him on her bed.
"Last night, but you were asleep, so I didn't want to bother you. So, here I am! Yay!" He said, still bouncing up and down on her bed. She laughed at him, and felt relieved to see him back to normal.
"You shouldn't be here, you know, you're not allowed to be in the girl's dorms." She said, feeling slightly worried that someone would come in, and find Steve and Macy, alone, and get the wrong picture.
"Nah, it's fine, I've been in here before, and you've been in my dorm, so it's okay. Anyway, if someone is comes in, I'll burst though the glass and run into the forest." He said, laughing. Macy laughed too, but wasn't completely sure if he was being serious or not.
"So, how are you feeling?" She asked. The last time she saw him, he wasn't looking his best, but now he seemed normal.
"Oh, I'm great. I don't see what all the fuss was about before, anyway. But how are you?" He asked her, more concerned than what Macy expected.
"I'm fine, I'm fine. Just a little bored, but not anymore!" She laughed, hoping that Steve would take it as a joke. She wasn't in the best mood to express her feelings, how excited she really was to see him. He smiled, and stood up, going over to her desk. He looked though her shelves of books, taking out a couple to look at the front covers, but placed them carefully back to their position. He started to open her drawers, and laughed when he opened up the second one and found all the pictures that he had given her, photos of them over their friendship, even a few feathers that he had placed in her hair on the camping trip. Macy blushed, feeling slightly embarrassed, hoping that he wouldn't think that it was a mini-shrine to him, but he smiled, looking though it, in silence. After a few minutes, he closed the drawer and opened the last one. He looked though all the papers and whatever else had been crammed into it, and his face lit up as he brought out a photo album that had been pushed to the bottom of it.
He jumped up in the bed again, laughing.
"I really can't wait to look at this." He said, opening it up, to the first page. Macy stayed silent, as he turned the pages of her childhood, studying each photo intently. He finally came to a page that made Macy bit her lip at.
"Oh, gracious me, is that Macy Deltine with black hair?!" He shouted, taking out and holding up the photo.
"Yeah, that's me. I was 14, and staying with my aunt during the summer in the country. I decided that that was the only time that I was free, and I decided to give it a try. My mother made me bleach it out as soon as I came home, but I think it was worth it." She explained. Without her noticing, he slipped it into his pocket. He turned the page, and looked at a picture of Macy and one of her childhood friends, Cassie. He smiled, as looked at each photo carefully. Finally he came to the back of the album, and he closed it, setting it on his lap. He didn't say anything for a while. Macy tried to search for something to say, but couldn't think of anything.
"I'm sorry." He finally said, his eyes fixed on the album in his lap.
"Why?"
"Just, Jude said that when you found me, you were crying and stuff, but I didn't notice." He said, his hair darkening to black.
"No, it's fine, you weren't in the right state of mind. It's okay." She tried to reassure him. He sighed, and looked up at her, his grey eyes looking straight into hers. She smiled, and looked down at her feet, trying to escape his eyes. She heard some girls run though the corridor, and she again realised that Steve shouldn't have been in her room. But she didn't really want him to go. She frowned, feeling annoyed at herself, for wanting to purposely breaking the rules.
"What's the matter?" He asked, trying to catch her eye.
"Oh, nothing's the matter, it's fine." She looked up, trying to feel perky. He smiled, not feeling completely convinced, but his hair went green again, and he jumped up onto his feet.
"You know, it isn't fair that you girls have huge rooms. Our ones are itty-bitty. You even have a bathroom!" He shouted, running into it.
"Hey, come out of there, that's a girls bathroom." She shouted at him. He came out and rolled his eyes.
"Is there a difference?" He asked, walking over to the window. He stood by it for a minute, looking out at it's view. "Hey, do you wanna go and get something to eat in Cardsdale? I know I won't really be welcomed, but I'll wear a hat, or something." He said, walking back over to her, looking at the other's things carefully.
"Um, yeah, that sounds good." She said, sitting back on her bed.
"It's weird, you know, being in the Heads' room. This is where all the big decisions get made, then." He said, looking over at Will and Madeleine's beds.
"Oh, I wish." She replied, rolling her eyes. He finally sat down on her bed again. He then flopped himself back, so he was facing the ceiling. Macy followed and may beside him, her feet hanging off the other side of the bed. He began to laugh, making Macy laugh too.
"Oh, it's so good to be back." He said, placing his arm under his head. Macy shook with surprise, as Steve grabbed her hand.
"Yeah." She managed to choke out. "It really is."
