Misa leaned against the door, thanking what ever God that was listening there were no other occupants in the dorm currently.
She had been out of the company of any other girls for far too long to deal with some ditzy, pampered princesses.
She sighed and held a hand against her forehead, calming along with her heart rate. But her mind refused to relax with her body. All these problems just kept whizzing round and round within her mind.
Was she really safe here? Could they still reach her - control her?
No, she stopped the thoughts. That couldn't happen.
"Ken'ichi said this was the safest place in the world." She said aloud to herself, trying to reiterate the phrase with volume. Her heart suddenly plummeted to somewhere in the vicinity of her stomach, making her feel queasy. Ken'ichi...there had been no time to grieve for him, only time to save herself.
She had done it for him. He had brought her all that way, protected her for years to get her here, she wasn't about to throw that away over some stupid emotion. Yet the crushing guilt and regret that came with the thought of him could not be ignored or passed off as just some stupid emotion.
He had dedicated his life, sacrificed it, for her. She wasn't worth his sacrifice. She wasn't worth the dirt he had once walked upon. She who hadn't even had the guts to tell him her feelings. She didn't deserve to be alive.
Dragging herself mechanically Misa slipped off her shoes and curled up on a bed which appeared to have no current owner without pulling the covers up. Her exhausted mind pulled her into a distant place where the fears of her heart became a reality without escape.
Alone. She was so alone and cold and, G-d – the pain. The darkness was coming at her from every angle, tendrils of it curling into her very flesh it felt, cold fingers of abyss curling round her throat.
Misa shivered and wrapped her arms around herself for comfort. She screamed. Suddenly very real fingers and intertwined with her own.
"Misa?" A voice whispered to her. A voice she knew she ought never to have heard again.
"Ken'ichi?" She hardly dared breathe, never mind believe it. And then the darkness was gone as she span around and there he was. Every detail was exactly as she remembered.
His half smile, the single lock of hair which refused to tame and hung in his eyes. Everything. She released the breath she had forgotten was being held at ransom in her chest. She launched herself into his waiting arms, taking in that fresh cotton smell she had always associated with him.
Slowly, she pulled back and raised a hand to his face, stroking his cheek gently.
"You..."She trailed away.
"If I knew I'd get this response I would have died so much sooner," he said jokingly.
"But how...?" Misa asked. Ken'ichi seemed to be considering the thought. He gently took her hand from his cheek and held it within his own, as though he were remembering her touch.
"They say," he said slowly, meeting her gaze and holding it steady. "They say that the ones which love us never truly leave us. I promised I would protect you always."
"Oh..." She whispered. "I never told you how sorry I am. For everything." And before she could stop herself Misa had begun to gush, spilling all her regrets and fears to him. Ken'ichi listened. He slowly sat them both down and she curled up next to him, their bodies fitting together like an old glove to its rightful hand.
Eventually she slowed down but her courage couldn't fail her now, what was there to lose?
"Ken'ichi...there is one last thing I am sorriest for." He raised an eyebrow in that way he had done so many times before and she knew she had to do this.
"I never did this." She said and without warning or further thought she kissed him.
It was soft and unsure but true and pure. She found herself lost within it, not knowing, not feeling anything but them.
After what could have been several blissful centuries or perhaps a matter of seconds it ended and Misa immediately felt a blush creep onto her cheeks. She closed her eyes and begged the ground to swallow her as he continued to be silent.
"Remember I will never leave you." Ken'ichi finally whispered and she opened her eyes to see not Ken'ichi, but the mattress above her own.
