Madeleine lay on her back beside the river in Lylis Glen. It had always been her favourite camp, because of the forest and the river.
The river was beautiful in the sunlight, sparkling and glittering over the rocks, contrasting with the darkness of the pine forest that it entered. It was a beautiful camp, and she loved it.
"Maddie! Get up!"
She glanced over towards the forest, and her heart skipped a beat as she saw Shaun laughing over at her.
"Shaun?" she asked, getting up.
"Come on," he said, jerking his head, and ran into the forest.
Madeleine got up, tripping slightly, and raced after him, jumping over the stream and chasing him into the forest.
Light was still streaming through the leaves, and the forest was very thin here. Shaun was standing there, grinning at her. "Hurry up, slowcoach," he chuckled, before running away through the forest.
She chased after him, her heart thumping loudly in her chest, but every time she got near him, he disappeared around a corner.
The forest was getting denser, darker, and filled with rocks. As she ran, she kept stumbling, crying out for Shaun to wait for her, to slow down. She kept running, then she fell catching her leg on a sharp rock. She cried out to Shaun, not only in desperation, but in pain, and fear that she would lose him - but still he kept on going, ignoring her cries. She got up and kept following him, until she was clutching a stitch in her side and was sure that she couldn't go any further.
Then, the forest ended suddenly, and they were on a tree lined road leading into the town of Lylis. It was night-time.
She'd seen this road before. This was the road where Shaun had been murdered.
They fell into step, chatting about Lost from half an hour before. Madeleine knew what was going to happen, and she tried to tell Shaun, she tried to get the words out, but she couldn't. Her mouth wouldn't let her say the words.
Then, Shaun lifted his head high, looking about suspiciously. "Maddie, get over there behind those trees."
"What?" she asked in a confused voice, when she was trying to scream "No! Come with me! Phone someone!"
"Go," he said, giving her a push in that direction. "And don't make a sound.
As she waited behind a bush, she watched Shaun, trying so hard to close her eyes, so she wouldn't have to see, but her eyelids wouldn't shut.
Then, the thugs came out...
She didn't scream, she didn't make a sound as they beat up and tortured her brother. Neither of them screamed when a thug brought out a seven inch butchers knife. She didn't scream when she heard her brother's grunts of pain as they kicked and punched him.
And she didn't scream when they stabbed him. And again, and again, and again...
Then they were gone, and Madeleine was sprinting home, as fast as she could, just as she had done that night; trying to believe that this was just a dream, trying to believe that it wasn't real, praying that she'd wake up and he'd be there, safe, and alive.
Suddenly, she fell into a large gulf, dropping into complete and utter blackness. As she screamed and free-fell, images of chess pieces started to come out. Chess pieces, leaves, and her brother's handsome face contorted in agony as they tortured him, and his blood everywhere, red and thick and gushing and -
Madeleine woke up in her bed at Orchid Hill, gasping for breath and sweating. She took hold of her headboard for support as she tried to get her breath back, trying to erase the nightmare from her head, trying to shut off like she did in every battle.
The thing was, alone at night, after reliving those moments, she could never shut off. She could never erase what she'd seen. And she'd never be able to forgive.
That battle hadn't been enough. She hadn't been able to get her revenge. She never would. The nightmares and flashbacks would never stop.
And she'd never, ever get what she yearned for. She'd never see him again, except in her dreams.
And that - that was the hardest part of it all. That was the part where strong, Warrior Madeleine disappeared, and became nothing more than a scared, bereaved, lonely sister.
