Kira opened her eyes slowly, feeling a strange pounding in her skull. The sunlight was streaming in, and she could hear the noises of people laughing and calling in the Common Room. They were so noisy Kira was surprised she slept through it at all. Sighng, she sat up and yawned widely, and something sparkly caught her eye.
Sliding off her bed and onto the floor, she got up and pulled the little bat chain from her bedside table. She hadn't really examined it since Professor Thandie had passed them out the previous day. She'd been too wrapped up in the upcoming dance, and the original resentment she'd felt towards Madeleine and Lee.
However, she'd now quite forgiven the both of them, but had warned them that if either hurt the other she would kick their asses. Although considering Madeleine and Lee were quite a bit tougher than her, she wasn't sure how that was really going to work out.
Twirling the necklace in her hands, she knelt down on the ground, and held it up for Frederick to see. Frederick wasn't officially her pet- he was just the little bat she'd found living under her bed one day when she was 12, and he'd been with her ever since. For some reason, Frederick liked to follow Kira about the place, and since she enjoyed his company, she let him.
"Looks just like you, Frederick," she grinned, catching sight of the little bat as it moved beneath her bed. "Except of course, it's shinier and much prettier."
The bat appeared not to hear her. He stared at her for a few moments, then turned and huddled up in a dark corner.
"Fine then," she laughed, putting the little chain around her neck, decorating it beautifully. "You big old grouch."
Sitting up, Kira peered out the window, looking fondly at the grounds stretching out before her. She could see students milling all over the place, and felt a strange upsurge of affection for them as well, although she knew none. She just felt inexplicably cheerful.
It made no sense, but it was wonderful.
Her eyes drifted across the room, and suddenly her eyes focused in on Macy's bed. God... there it goes... the first five minutes of blissful forgetfulness.
Holden had come running into the hall, screaming that Macy was missing. His face was covered in bruises, and Kira could tell immediately they'd been ambushed. The Headmaster had carried him of to the Head of the Carers, Will, to treat his wounds and had interviewed him personally. Kira knew no more than that.
But, she thought suddenly, it was her job to know, was it not? Initially, she'd been upset she'd been made Head of the Spies, but suddenly, she knew that this was exactly the position she wanted to be in right now. If she didn't do all she could... if... something happened... well, what kind of Head would she be anyway?
Madeleine, Will and Kira were to meet with Professor Hoodham in his office later on today. Although she hadn't really thought about it last night, too consumed with the shock of Macy's attack as she was, she hadn't quite registered why they were being called to meet with Professor Hoodham. But it was so obvious now. They were the Heads- they were being called to their first duty.
And Kira knew what her job would be.
Find Macy.
And- Kira thought, with a sudden rush of pride- knowing her, they really, really couldn't have picked anyone better to do her job. After all, who would suspect the Freak Dreamer?
