Lee pulled off his leather jacket, and his top, retracting his wings with a sigh of relief. These things always managed to get in the way, and eventually, you just got tired of them. Stretching, Lee turned to his trunk and began sifting through the mess within, searching for something to wear in the morning.
"Hey, Lee!"
Brian and Mike suddenly burst into the room, running at Lee with yells of triumph. Lee stood up modestly, knowing exactly what they were yelling about.
"You punched Levi Ryder's teeth out!" Mike cried, waving his arms in awe. "Levi Ryder!"
"Imagine that," Lee laughed.
"Two little pearly whites- nice victory there," Brian said proudly.
"We didn't think you had the guts," Mike admitted, smiling.
Brian nodded. "But you proved us wrong! Still, Mike and I were hardly gonna let you have all the fun..."
"So you got to punch him!" laughed Mike. "We got the teeth!"
Lee's mouth fell open. "You what?"
"We have Levi Ryder's teeth!" roared Brian thrusting his fist forward and opening it to reveal the two gleaming trophies.
Lee stared in mingled shock and amusement. "I... you weirdos..."
"Gorgeous, aren't they?" Mike said proudly.
"So white..." Brian said, poking one. "D'you reckon he uses some kind of special brand of toothpaste?"
"He's a flosser, at any rate."
"And mouthwasher."
"I use mouthwash."
"Apparently not enough."
"My teeth are fine-"
"How many fillings?"
"Two, but-"
"Pathetic," Brian sighed, shaking his head and baring his own teeth. "I have none."
"You did have braces at one point," Lee reminded him kindly.
Brian chose to ignore him. "My teeth are practically perfect in every way. Practically- okay?"
"Mary Poppins teeth!" chortled Mike.
"Who?" Brian and Lee asked simultaneously.
Mike gazed at them in shock for a few minutes. "You... you guys really were deprived, growing up in magic families, weren't you?"
Lee shrugged, and Brian went back to examining the teeth.
"If his teeth are so great... do you think they react the same way as everyone elses' when you stick them in Coke?"
Mike looked at them. "We should try it... you know," he added quickly, "for the purposes of science."
"Orchid Hill is all about knowledge," Brian said thoughtfully. "Yeah, we should try it!"
"That's pretty gross, guys," Lee butted in quickly, obeying the part of him that spoke in Bethany's voice, even though he himself was suddenly pretty keen to try it.
Brian rolled his eyes. "Let's go get Ellie, she'll wanna see this!"
Now it was Mike's turn to roll his eyes. "Gee, will she?"
Brian smiled sheepishly. "We can always go fetch Lydia too, if you like..."
"Ellie it is, then!" Mike cried, snatching the teeth and striding out of the dorm and back downstairs.
Brian turned to Lee expectantly. "Coming?"
Lee smiled and shook his head. "Just bring me the results later. Right now, I'm beat."
"Alright then," Brian smiled and left Lee alone.
Turning back to his trunk, Lee suddenly caught sight of something lying on his bedside drawers. Something he'd banished from his mind during the party...
Something he'd been dreading ever since it arrived...
Bethany's letter.
It was now or never.
Inhaling deeply, Lee picked up the letter and slit it open, sitting down on his bed to read...
Lee,
What the hell are you trying to do to us?! Was this meant to be some kind of joke? You had no right whatsoever to tell us you were coming home, and then just blow us off at the last moment! What do you mean 'a friend needed you'? What were we supposed to make of that? News travels fast, Lee. We heard about the latest battle. We heard about all those Cardsdale villagers in the Youth Revolution. A hell of a lot of people died, Lee. We were so scared. You've no idea.
The only thing that kept Mum and Dad sane throughout was the fact that you wouldn't be involved. I kept telling them not to worry- that you weren't at Orchid, that you were on your way home. It's bad enough knowing Kira is there- yes, believe it or not, I do still care about her- but Lee, for chrissake, the fact you're there is hell on earth. Absolute hell.
I know we fought a lot growing up. I know we never really were as close as we should've been- not nearly as close as you and Kira- but you're still my baby brother. I still love you. And you love us! We're your family, Lee. So don't get our hopes up like that, only to have them dashed just as quickly. If your friends are more important than us, just have the guts to come out and say it.
Go on, say it.
