“But, Olivia,” he said sincerely. “Sophie had nothing on you.”
Olivia had to smile softly, but it was a smile where she had to draw her eyelids closed over her green eyes to force back the tears. God, that was so sweet of him to say that, but… oh, God. Scott must have been one of only a few boys in the school to remain unaffected by Sophie’s dormant power, and for him to say that… well, it meant a lot, even if it was as untrue as Olivia knew it was.
Because, as she’d so ineloquently said many times so far, Sophie was Sophie. Sophie took everything that made Olivia confident and assured, and did it one thousand times better. That was all there was to it, in the end. As much as Olivia hated to think it, she really believed that to a certain extent, her hold over the boys of Orchid Hill – and, probably a little, over Jack too – had nothing to do with her dormant power, but just… just her. It was the hair, the walk, the husky French accent… Of course the hypnosis had been a lot of it, most of it; even Olivia knew that in her new state of lowered self-esteem – Lee Norris, for heaven’s sake! – but… yeah, it was still there.
That was why it was so lovely of Scott to make that comment. A boy who said something like that to try and cheer up a random girl was rare indeed here; it was a level of gentlemanliness that no one ever saw often among people their age… or, well, really, people in general, now. Scott just seemed so decent, and his attitude towards her was starting to warm Olivia’s chilled heart slightly.
Poor Isolde, having to be separated from someone like that, someone caring, decent (and although Olivia shouldn’t have noticed, rather attractive), and as mannerly as Scott. It just really, really wasn’t fair.
She opened her eyes again to meet his “That’s a lie, Scott,” she said softly, proud of herself for not letting the tears well. “But it cames from a sweet place; thank you.”
