Feeling the soft cushion-pad pressure of her nose against his cheek, Jude looked up blearily, the lights around them blindingly brighter now that he was opening his eyes. “Well, what do you reckon?” she asked him sweetly. Jude supposed he was a little more than obviously overwhelmed. He felt a bit like some kinda’ frightened animal caught in the headlights; but right now, his emotions were running far too high for him to be anything other than a little… zonked. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt this high. He couldn’t remember if he’d ever felt this high. Smiling at Ailith briefly, he looked back at the patiently eager DJ. “Surprise us.” The DJ clapped his hands together with a shout of laughter. “What a sport! Well, I’ve got one for you alright- you kids like a bit of jazz?” “Yeah…” “Fantastic,” the DJ disappeared into the crowd again without another word. The people around them began to disperse, returning to their games, but Jude clutched Ailith all the tighter, feeling strangely exposed with the lack of bodies around them. “What’s he gonna’ do?” he asked her finally, his inbred Spy curiosity getting the better of him even now, fighting its way past his singing heart and voicing itself.

"I honestly have no idea." Ailith frowned but still smiling. "Jazz? Bit odd music genre in one of these places is it not?" The DJ bounced up the steps to his platform and smiled as he disappeared behind his turntables and assorted speakers. Ailith tried to sneakily steal back her hand from Jude’s and wipe her eyes with her sleeve. However Jude did notice and, without a word, he raised the hand she had let go and wiped more tears away for her. Ailith closed her eyes at the pure tenderness of his hand upon her face and the careful, gentle strokes his thumb made below her eyes. She opened her eyes once they were dry and took Jude’s hand again. Then the DJ cut in, “OK this is dedicated to the couple in lane 12. Good luck guys.” He pressed a button and played a single record. Ailith listened to the bouncy swing introduction all symbols and brass. Then came the lyrics, together with the remarkable voice of Frank Sinatra. Someday, when I’m awfully low When the world is cold… Ailith laughed and sang the first verse gently an octave higher, “I will feel a-glow just thinking of you, and the way you look tonight.” She nudged Jude, “You know this one?”

Something told him he should. Her tears still shone in his hands; as glistening droplets rising from the swirls of his fingertips. Jude stared at them for a couple of seconds, with the strangest feeling that they were like rescued diamonds. Precious information. They were hers, and they were happy. She really did love him. That knowledge still rocked him. Jude smiled to himself weakly, before clenching his fist and rubbing the tears away. "I don't know," he said finally, his ears finally registering the jazzy swing of the song surrounding them. "It sounds familiar." More than familiar. His mind was already humming along in time with Ailith's gentle voice.

Ailith tilted her head back and rolled her eyes, "Oh come on, Frank Sinatra? The Way You Look Tonight? With your smile so warm," She sang the second verse as if it would help Jude's memory if he heard the words properly. "And your cheeks so soft, There is nothing for me but to love you, And the way you look tonight." Ailith raised her eyebrows, anything? It had been years since she had heard that song but she remembered the words. They were sweet certainly, but Ailith wondered what made the DJ think of this song of all he could have chosen. She voiced this to Jude, "What do you reckon made him pick this song?"

"Good taste?" Yes you're lovely, with your smile so warm And your cheeks so soft... Across the alleys, people hummed as they bowled. Jude tried to make sense of the words, to answer her question properly. It was a classic love song. Frank Sinatra had been charming people for decades. Why this song? With each word your tenderness grows, Tearing my fear apart... "Why do you think he chose it?" And that laugh that wrinkles your nose, It touches my foolish heart. ... wow. Jude knew why, alright. Smiling slightly at the irony of the moment, Jude kissed Ailith's cheek on impulse. "You know, our game's only halfway through."

Ailith was deep in thought when she was brought to the present with a kiss. "You know, our game's only halfway through." Ailith glanced up at the monitor. This was, not that she had much to go on, officially the best date she'd been on. One that would later have her lying in bed staring through the gap in her curtains, whispering so quietly so her dormmates couldn't hear, 'I'm in love.' "Alright then," Ailith looked up at Jude," if you get a strike next time, ice-cream on me." And she went to pick up a ball.
