What a strange feeling that was stirring in his chest. He knew it well, though he could hardly think of the last time he'd felt it. The cold stab of jealousy. And fear. He admitted it. "Hmm," he said gruffly. "Right. Okay." He didn't know what else to say.

Madeleine started at his rough tone. He didn't... oh, no way... She started to laugh - probably not the right thing to do, but she couldn't help it. "Oh, Lee, please don't tell me you think something is happening between Levi and me. He's just trying to annoy me."

He didn't know why, but he felt it again. The poisonous snake of jealousy broke forth, hissing and spitting. Soon it would sink its fangs in, poisoning him, his words and mind and heart... Worse still, he knew he was being stupid. He knew. It wasn't just that though. Chloe had mentioned something about Levi hanging around a lot with Madeleine. Chloe didn't lie- she stated exactly what she saw. And come to think of it, he had seen Levi tailing her a little lately... "Chloe says she's seen you with him a lot," he muttered, a little embarrassed despite all of the above by her laughter.

The laughter stopped, and suddenly Madeleine was snarling at Lee like a panther. This was the side of her she'd hoped to keep from him. This was her at her most dangerous. She didn't need to shapeshift to become as threatening as this. She'd been threatened. She'd react. It was animal instinct, something that was in everyone. "Oh, so Chloe said, did she?" she snarled. "Well, I'm sure Chloe's testimony is much more reliable than mine. After all, I'm only your girlfriend. What's she?" God, she hated her. She'd dismissed her suspicions as being stupid... but that felt like a confirmation to her. Maybe Levi was right. Maybe she should be worried. Or maybe she was just letting him get to her to much. Immediately she backed down. "Look, I'm sorry that... I didn't mean that," she said, apologetically, looking into his eyes and silently imploring him to forgive her.

Lee froze, his blood running cold. This wasn't right. This wasn't right- this wasn't going right at all. Madeleine and Lee didn't argue this way. Madeleine and Lee were happy. Madeleine and Lee were offically girlfriend and boyfriend- they were dating- he... he... He longed for her soft scent, and skin; her warm touch and the airy touch of her lips... He laughed with her, and joked with her, and cared about her... a scary heck of a lot. Stop doing this. Stop, stop, stop... But he was so cold. Getting to his feet, he heaved a sigh, and shook his head at the forthcoming waiter. "She's my friend, Madeleine. She has an opinion. And sometimes... quite frankly, I share it." And he left. And just like that, his heart seemed to splinter.

Madeleine gripped the table as he left; cursing herself for losing her temper, cursing him for triggering it and then leaving. What was happening? This wasn't like them. This was Lee. The same Lee that Madeleine had spent most of a night talking to and the rest thinking about. And she still couldn't sleep at night because of him, because she couldn't get him out of her mind. She still wanted to spend every minute with him, to touch him, to kiss him - just to be with him. And still every tiny cell in her brain and her heart screamed every time she thought about him in battle, because she couldn't lose him. Losing him was still the worst thing she could imagine happening to her. So why was she just letting him walk away like that? Why wasn't she going after him? She closed her eyes, the warrior part of her brain forcing all these thoughts out. But as it did so... her heart started to wilt.
